I updated to version 21 and noticed that my videos play very sluggishly and tend to loose sync. Has anyone else had this experience. ?
If it is not due to the new version, does anyone know what to do to correct this problem?

We've seen a lot of similar problems recently. Most were traced to antivirus programs. Norton, Kaspersky, even Microsoft. There is a link to these in the "Weird Problems" thread, in my signature. It's near the top of the first post.

If I uninstall my AVG Antivirus, i will be vulnerable to infection.
I payed $111 for 3 Year Subscription ,so I am loathe to use another Antivirus.
If I uninstall J River Media center, would you [they] be willing to refund my purchase. I paid for it yesterday.
I would appreciate a reply to my email address if possible.
regards,
Jules

When we suggest that you remove the Anti-Virus, it is not as a solution, but as a test to rule the application in or out as the cause. It is typically possible, once you know that is the cause, to tame the anti-virus application to behave nicely with MC (and many other applications that are troubled by AV programs).

Get your money back.
Report the problem to the manufacturer.
The Microsoft antivirus usually behaves well.

If AVG allows, you could try setting up AVG to have JRiver files/folders "excluded" from AVG scans. That may be enough to keep your videos playing smoothly.
I use Microsoft Defender, but even so I exclude the JRiver ".exe" files, the folders with my media, and JRiver program folders from being scanned (it's all shown in the link Glynor provided).

I'm also a fan of Windows Defender, so if that works for you (it is free), then stick with it.
However, I'm sure you can get AVG to behave if you want to keep it. You just want to set it to "trust" or "exclude" MC itself and a few auxiliary executables that MC uses, along with a few essential disk locations (especially your Library location on disk). I don't have instructions for AVG written up, because I don't use that anywhere, but the details of what you want to exclude (or trust) are included in the article for Windows Defender:

Figure out how to do the same thing in AVG, and I'm sure it'll be fine to keep using it.
