18.0.139 - Analyze audio doesn't allow more items to be added.

I can select files and go to analyze audio, but selecting more doesn't add them to the queue.

I have to exit and restart to add more.

Minor bug, as I can still use MC just fine.

I'm on Mountain Lion 10.8.2, using a 2012 15" rMBP (retina Macbook Pro).  First thing I noticed is that I can't minimize the app to the dock, th eminimize button in the upper left corner does nothing for me & double clicking the title bar does nothing...

Oh, and how do I register this using the license I bought?  I went through Options & can't see where to add the registration code.

Hi Jim and everyone at JRiver,

I'm a fan of JRiver since Media Jukebox 6. I used Media Center to sync my iPods, but with the purchase of iPhones and iPads I unfortunately had to change sides, using Media Center only rarely on some Windows PCs or with Parallels on my Mac, e.g. in order to save/convert stuff to SD cards for my car audio.

Well, it's great to see that JRiver's Media Center finally arrived on Mac. Congratulations and thanks for your efforts. Hopefully the program will grow quickly and be a perfect match to it's Window's mother for the audio area, soon.

A first five minutes test put a smile onto my faces. Sure, I've found some issues already and on a MacBook Pro Retina it does look, well, a bit rough. But hey, that's surely the least of the things that matter right now.

Maybe I should know better, but I'm irritated that I can't use my system's volume/mute keys anymore. Is that a bug or caused by the way the program works (at least at the moment)?

Well, JRiver, congratulations again to finally making the step over to the Mac. I hope it'll pay out well financially and that we Mac users won't face a too rough first weeks/months using Media Center. My early bird was flying my money over already by the way. And while I don't know yet exactly how my future workflow will be using both iTunes (for syncing with iPhones/iPads) and Media Center (for at least providing converted files on SD cards for the cars' audio systems), at least I won't need to run Media Center in Parallels, but straight on Mac OS X.

All the best from Germany,

Mighty A-MAN

I also have a rMBP and the same issue. I presume that currently only the X button works and that the issue isn't linked to the rMBP. I will check on my iMac later, but I really think it's a universal, though small, issue.
Edit: The Full Screen button does work when I switch to a higher resolution (1920 and higher).

Oh, and how do I register this using the license I bought?  I went through Options & can't see where to add the registration code.

My understanding is that the first version doesn't need to be registered as it times out in March automatically anyway. Until then you can simply use the full product. On the next version you might need the Registration Code/Install Key.

Best regards,

Mighty A-MAN

Ohhh, that's right, Re: registration for the first alpha release...  I now remember reading that somewhere.

Predictably, the UI is beyond rough right now, and I've been a Mac guy for so long it's taking me a bit to get used to menus & other options in windows-based MC, but still gotta say, when the music is actually playing, I like this better than iTunes.  Maybe placebo, I don't know, but I'm looking forward to taking this journey w/ all of you.

It shouldn't use that much in normal operation.  Are you playing back from memory?

I'm seeing a resident set size of only 130+ Meg.

MC does use a fair amount of CPU time (9-11%) while playing a track.

I just verified in options, and no, I do not have that option checked.  In fact, I haven't changed any of the default settings as I'm still kinda feelign my way around (I've never used MC before...been a Mac guy for years).

Great to have it available.  I am using it on a MBP with snow leopard ver 10.6.8  What I noticed is that the sound must be off mute before I open MC.
However the volume is not controllable.

How long do you anticipate until we can use our PS Audio DACs with MC?  Also, would a hardwire solution work best?

Thanks!

In Playlist or Smartlist, is it possible to get albums to show rather than each individual track?
Title: Re: JRiver Media Center for Mac version 18.0.139 Alpha -- Available Here
Post by: MrC on February 22, 2013, 08:07:20 pm
Playlists and Smartlists are File Lists - that is, they show individual tracks.

You can make a view that shows your Playing Now items in groupings just like other views.

Create a new view of whatever type you want (e.g. Panes, Categories).  Set a custom Set rules for file display using the Import/Export button:

   [=isinplayingnow()]=1

See attached screenshot.

Very nice! I have  it set up and running well--and sounds very good! A completely promising alpha release! Thanks!

I notice though that only about half my library has cover art, and that uncovered a couple of bugs:

1) when I copied my cover art directory from MC windows to the right location on my Mac, nothing changed (so the image files weren't being picked up)

2) when I tried to change the cover art directory in options to another location (USB attached drive) MC wouldn't let me :)

3) when I went to get the art from the internet with library tools, the system found the right art but wouldn't apply it to the album (and then would stay memory resident, so that the only way to shut down MC was to force a shutdown--exit kept saying tools were open when they weren't).

I wouldn't mention this at this stage except for number 3 (which requires the forced shut down) and that, in lieu of a theater view, the album art (zoomed) would totally do the trick for a (very) long while!

Thanks again!

I'm pretty impressed so far.  The one thing that I can't get is my cover art.  I've looked on your wiki page but I must be missing something.  If I click on the thumbnail > Cover Art > Get From Internet > Select Image and Save Cover Art but it doesn't save that image.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Given the amount of promotion PS Audio is doing on this new offering, that is a good question. Although my PWD MKII is performing well using EMM as a source running on a current Mac mini, OS X 10.8.2, with 16gb RAM and connected to the network via Ethernet, I am hopeful that MC will be a more reliable source, especially in a UPnP config. I would prefer not to use the Mac mini as the controller, even with a remote. I am looking forward to this development. In my own case, setting up the library to sync with my music folder of about 15,000 tracks, from start to finish, including cover art and thumbnail generation took about 6-7 minutes. Not bad at all. Analyzing audio took much longer, but no surprise there.

@Mods--do you want bugs here? Or in a separate thread?

I've found MC creating "popping and clicking" noises during playback with FLAC files (sounds like vinyl with a scratched record :)). I'm using a MacBook Air (has 2GB of RAM, SSD and playing off a USB2 drive), Dragonfly DAC, and latest OSX.

I also had this happen randomly on my 4GB i-7 Mac mini with a USB3 drive.

Doesn't happen with Decibel on either system, so it's not the source or the DAC. Could it be buffering or something?

And the only way I can quit is by right clicking the dock icon & selecting Quit from the context menu (neither Command + Q nor the X in the title bar of the player work).

2012 Retina Macbook Pro (2.6GHz i7 | 16GB RAM | 256GB SSD)
Mountain Lion 10.8.2
Safari, Firefox & Chrome installed (all updated to most current)

ETA:  also using latest build of MC, 18.0.139

Yes, it's a little rough (my main problems are the occasional split-second drop-outs), and sometimes I can't easily get the MC screen back up. BUt the sound quality (and that's what it's all about, right guys?) is excellent. I've been using Pure Music for a couple years (and also Decibel, Audirvana, etc...) and while I haven't had time to do an in-depth A/B, I've played enough of my favorites to know we're in the same zipcode with the best MAC playback programs I'm familiar with.

I have lots of questions, but for now, I'll let you guys get back to work. Kudos on a great start!

Great to see this released for Mac.

Works fine using headphone out and also works using optical digital out to an external DAC, but it does not seem to work through my USB DAC (Apogee Duet 2). I have chosen the Duet as the playback device in Playback Options. When I try to play a song, the Audio Path view shows the correct input and output as if it's playing, but there is no sound and the song appears to be stuck (not playing in the transport).

I tried playing from memory and not playing from memory. I tried selecting exclusive access and deselecting exclusive access. I tried internal volume, system volume, and disabling volume. Nope nope nope...

I am running 10.8.2 on a MBP with 8GB RAM and 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5.

Try changing the volume mode from system to internal and back.
Also try playback with another app (itunes).

I had similar problem when trying mc mac on my 2011 imac after first install. Fiddling with the volume modes as well as playing back with itunes suddenly defroze mc mac!

Resize the window, then double click on the menu bar. Normal mac behaviour would make the program minimize, but MC maximizes. Also, if you then resize the window again you see a weird black window under the main MC window.

I just downloaded 18.0.139 and had the same problem with 138- the program won't import music.  I'm using a brand new iMac utilizing Mountain Lion.

What a great start you guys are making! Even in alpha, the file management speeds are impressive -- and I'm working with a 2TB library. Playback is very nice, and bitrates are changed to match the files. I have created a special view for classical music (that's my bailiwick) that is suiting my tastes quite nicely.

Of course I'm finding some bugs. Here are the most consistent ones. OS 10.8.2, Mac Pro with 8 cores. Music library on a separate internal 3TB drive. MC plays out via USB to a V-Link/192, thence to DAC and amp.

1) Tagging: the program can't really do this without crashing. I have found that sometimes if I tag multiple files it manages to write tags to some of them, but so far tagging is pretty much a guaranteed crash.

2) Clicks: after a while the program becomes generally unresponsive to mouse clicks. I have found that in most cases right-clicking (instead of left) gets it to respond again, but from that point until restarting the program clicks become hit-and-miss.

3) Resizing the main window from the bottom: sometimes causes a weird hiccup in which the whole thing just disappears, but the program is still running.

4) The occasional file plays with a bunch of skips and stutters. But stopping, then restarting playback, solves it.

5) Search: another guaranteed crash.

I'm looking forward to watching MC grow!  :)

Getting the attached error (screenshot) when trying to edit file properties directly within MC, e.g. artist.  However, it seems to successfully change the property regardless of the error.

I'd just like to apologize for the slacking on the new build.

I've been busy this weekend, and tonight I need my rest.  I'll try to work on this tomorrow evening.  But, great work all around.  I'm quite excited about the possibilities!

Thanks for the detailed feedback everyone.  We'll be prioritizing and working hard this week to smooth out as many of the reported problems as we can.

Hi
Congratulations to your decision for a Mac version!
I used Elyric for my Ps Audio DAC so far and Paul McGowen suggested to switch to JRiver...
As a new member of the community I would like to motivate and support you as good as I can...

I installed the first alpha version.

I know that I should not report minor bugs, however my MC 18 does not start at all!  ;)
I work on Mac Pro, 12 GB RAM, 4x3 TB drives, newest OS including all software updates and clean installed 2 months ago...
When I start MC 18 nothing happens (also no warning about a crash ecc)
All the best - looking forward to hearing from you!

Welcome and thanks for the good wishes.  Watch the thread on crashes.  We think that older hardware is a problem.  We hope to have a fix this week.

Hi there,

After using Media Center for Mac a couple of days on my rMBP, I've installed it on my iMac now as well. However, there's a strange behaviour, as MC seems to play funny with the Audio Output options: It constantly switches to my Sennheiser Bluetooth Headset. And as that isn't connected, Mac OS is giving out an error message.

That also results in me being unable to change the volume through the keyboard, but only through MC's volume slider.

Best regards,

Mighty A-MAN

Could that be the default device setting in the OS?  I believe it can be changed there.

Hi Jim,

I wish that would be the case, but no, all OS settings are correct and only get changed to the Headset by Media Center. I didn't even had that Headset connected since ages, so was very puzzled at first. I might check later to see what happens after restarting the whole system, but don't really expect any change in the behaviour.

On another note, and sorry if I'm asking what I should have read somewhere, but I can't recall/find anything: Isn't there a MP3 audio codec included? I used Media Center for Windows via Parallels in order to convert my high-quality audio to simple 128kbit MP3 files for in-car usage. But it seems there's no MP3 option in the Mac version yet. Also I can't mount the SD card I'm using in-car as I can do in the Windows version, which I guess is just a yet missing feature. While I can get around that, I obviously can't do anything if there's no MP3 encoder.

Thanks and best regards,

Mighty A-MAN

I'm not able to play my import WAV files using MC without distortion in the playback.  I'm currently using an external DAC (Weiss) with a firewire connection. Any suggestions?

That could be a bug.  We have a known audio playback problem.  Should be fixed soon if that's what it is.
