Title: Troubles with Onkyo DLNA [feedback wanted]
Post by: Matt on October 05, 2012, 04:39:15 pm
We've heard several reports of users experiencing troubles with DLNA and their Onkyo devices.  We'd like to get to the bottom of it.

If you have an Onkyo, could you let us know the model and how it works with DLNA and Media Center?

We're planning to get an Onkyo for testing, but we're not sure if we should get a TX-NR414, etc. model or the older TX-NR509, etc. model.

Thanks for any help.

I have a TX-NR709 and my troubles are described here: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=74118

I have also tried the "Push To" functionality of MC and there are occasional hiccups in the sound as well as the Artist name (second line of AVR display) seems to disappear after a few seconds.  I have neither of these problems when playing from the AVR itself.

Bump.

We'd like to hear from any owners of the newer TX-NR414, TX-NR515, TX-NR616, etc.

Thanks.

Hi Matt,

I have one TX-NR818 and have some DLNA issues:
First and foremost it does not play gapless
For some obscure reason it makes MC sending twice the info to Last.fm when I use it as a renderer
As cncb noted, the information on AVR display is disappearing fast...

I did participate in a few threads in the Media Network part of the forum.

But still no luck with both issues.
Nevertheless everything I throw at it plays well, without hiccups and it sounds good to me!
Cheers
Kami

Bob thinks he knows why the scrobbling is doubling (http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=73963.msg508362#msg508362) and we'll find a fix for it.

Thank you Matt,
Yes, looking forward to bob's fix.
In the mean time, do you have a set of test or checks that we can do to help and standardize a bit the feedback?

I just bought an Onkyo TX-NR515 this week and tested playing from MC18 (DLNA server) and pushing to my Onkyo (renderer) from MC18 and both work fine.

Sometimes (but very rare occasions), a song which is pushed to my Onkyo renderer doesn't play completely and skips to the next one, but for the remainder all is fine.

I'm happy to do some testing if required and if others still have issues.

I just tried my Onkyo again and tried to do a search as a DLNA client.  MC seems to return all tracks when doing a search from the Onkyo?

When trying the "Push To" mechanism there still is the display issue where the second display line (artist name) disappears.  Also, unlike in my previous testing pause and next when performed by the Onkyo remote don't seem to function in this scenario anymore.

I now have an Integra.  Are you still interested in more details?

I've been able to pull and push, with much more time spent pulling.

If you look at it with device spy, does it support SetNextAVTransportURI?

The artist info is interesting since there are several ways of dispensing it. The big difference between pushing and pulling though is that when pulling, the renderer asks specifically for what MetaData fields it wants whereas with pushing, we send it every non-empty item in our database that can be assigned to a DLNA defined metadata field  and it's up to the renderer to decide what to use.

Sending you a PM with something to try if you would...

I haven't looked w/Device Spy (yet).  I saw the PM first, and responded to it.  Do you need me to still look?

If you wouldn't mind. They are separate issues (the SetNext is for gapless support).
Thanks!

I got your picture of the Integra display. Is that the way you expected it to look after the change? If so, perhaps removing that field would be good. We'll need to test here against several of our devices.

Also, since it looks like your device has SetNext support you might try pushing some gapless material to it and see if it plays gaplessly (this only works with pushing).
You'll need to make sure the DLNA controller option for the Integra zone doesn't have SetNext support disabled.

We have seen SetNext gapless work in a couple of devices and the Whitebear renderer.
However even though it's supported on other devices, like many Sony devices, they will play with a smaller gap, but still not gaplessly.

Attached is a table that shows the matrix I tested.  Current MC versions show Album Artist (auto) on the last line of the display; your version shows Artist.  This seems correct; showing Album Artist (auto) is interesting, but not so useful for the (Multiple Artists) case (e.g. Album Artist is empty on compilation disc).

It doesn't appear that gapless works.  In fact, there's about a 10 second gap in between tracks.  I'll test more tomorrow on this.

At my Onkyo TX-NR515 the search doesn't return any results.
I don't have any issues with artist name, this just displays fine

Any hope getting Search to work?

We'll need to know what the search query looks like (wireshark). We do support search and it works fine with other renderers.
