Title: DLNA Boxes
Post by: JimH on December 25, 2009, 08:15:01 am
The name for this type of device isn't clear, but the device functions is similar to a Set Top Box for cable TV.  Here are the characteristics:

1.  It "feeds" a TV or receiver with audio, video, and pictures.  This connection can be made with an HDMI cable (preferred), composite, component, optical, etc.  This connection is just like any other A/V device (DVD player, for example).

2.  It connects to the network.  This can be wired, wireless, etc.

3.  It supports DLNA (but some UPnP devices will also work).

3a.  It must be more than a DLNA Server.  It must also be a Renderer, meaning it can "play", and not just "serve" files.  Some "media servers" support DLNA, but do not support the renderer feature.  They are useful but don't belong in this category.

The Western Digital TV Live (http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=55369.0) is a DLNA Box.  It retails for just over $100.  Known to work with MC.

Any word on the LG Network Blu-ray Disc Player BD370 (http://www.amazon.com/LG-Network-Blu-ray-Disc-Player/dp/B001UQ6F4S/&tag=wwwjrmediacen-20)?

(My HTPC went belly up.)

No idea, but it looks promising.  Do reviews say whether the DLNA works?

I added a link to Amazon, where they sell it for $150.

I tried a Sony BDp-S560 Blu-ray player today.  MC doesn't see it.  Something about "Connection Manager".  I tried generic and PS3 settings for the UPnP Server.

Can this box "sync" to a zone from MC?  I presume not but it should would be cool if it did.  I would mainly be interested in syncing the current music zone.

The box appears as a zone inside Playing Now in MC.  You can then play any audio content that your UPnP server exposes.

hmmm.. I already ordered one just based on its ability to play HD video - I may end up with more than I bargained for.  Looking forward to getting my hands in this now.

The DLink-520's and also the Onyko TX-NR807 works.

Does the Onkyo work for videos too?
I see a TX-NR1007 in my short term future. It'd be cool to not have to switch on the HTPC for music only.

That's the one I want to get.  Just needs to drop $50 and I'll go for it.  (My HTPC sputtered back to life with a replacement power supply so this isn't as urgent.)

There's newegg.ca.

I live 10 minutes from the border so I order most of my stuff from the US and have it shipped to a US address.

The reason I mentioned Newegg.com specifically is that there are many items that newegg.ca doesn't sell, which its US counterpart does. I live about 40 minutes from the border. My in-laws are American, so they often drive stuff up from NYC. However, the MIL has just moved to be near us in Montreal, and the FIL is currently in Florida. I'm in no rush right now, but I think I will probably drive down and pick one up at some point.
We just bought a downtown Montreal house, and spending ~$40K on renovations (including getting it wired up with in-wall speakers, 2x gigabit in every room etc.) so $1K+ that I can avoid spending for a few weeks is okay by me.
I can't wait to have my 9.2 media room, the 7.1 dining/living room and the 7.1 gym/basement, all running MC or DLNA boxes driven by MC!

Not quite sure what you mean, but if it's a simple case of going down across the border, buying one and bringing it back - paying duties etc. along the way- I think I'd still save close to $400.
Can you elaborate if you had somehting else in mind?

I have a lot of friends in Hongcouver who have PO boxes in Blaine, WA.  Same thing in Kingston and Ottawa.  Both Watertown and Ogdensburg (NY) do a decent business renting out PO boxes to folks living north of the border.

You're in Montreal?  Neat!  I did an exchange year at McGill (late 1970s) and am still recovering from the nightlife.

I suppose from Montreal the closest place to get a PO Box would be in Plattsburgh.

Thanks for the tips. I know some online retailers won't ship to PO boxes, but I can do some research.

Montreal is an amazing city - moved here from England. Never going back! I'm the Neuroscience Graduate Program Administrator at McGill, and last night I was at a great grad student party. ;)

The LG BD370 does not support DLNA as far as I can tell. I have one. It supports streaming from three hardcoded sources (Netflix, CinemaNow, and YouTube) and that is it. I also have an Xbox 360 and that works with DLNA but disappointingly it does not play DVD video (VOBs and IFOs). If I get the right box will that work over DLNA or will I have to encode them (and lose DVD menu functionality, chapters, etc in the process)?

Edit: Looks like the BD390 is supposed to support it, but it is about twice the price of the BD370.

I tried to set my Popcorn Hour C200 as a DLNA Renderer and MC as a DLNA controller.
I can see my Popcorn Hour in Paying Now. So I drag a file on it in order to play it.
It reads the first 5 sec of the file in a loop with no sound.

Is Popcorn Hour C200 really DLNA compatible?
I posted a message in their forum asking the same question.

Thank you in advance for your feedback.

With the October or September firmware on the Popcorn Hour and the latest version of MC14 I can view and watch everything from my Mediacenter PC to the Popcorn Hour.

My DLNA Settings are:
Audio
 - Conversion: Convert Unsupported Formates
 - Encoder: MP3

Images
 - Support image content

Video
 - Support video content

Advanced
 - DLNA
 - Omit host portion of URL (not sure if this is needed but I have it checked and it works so,,,)

And thats all I can play all my videos. Flac won't stream but with it converting no problems

Hope this helps you

Garry

My build is 130.
DLNA settings are on for Controller, Renderer and Server

As for the firmware, I haven't updated it to the last one (available for 2 days now).
Here are the changelog regarding UPnP AV ...
"9. UPnP AV
   - Resolved photo pause-next will hang the system
   - support mp2v m4a mp4 m4v.
   - Resolved PlayOn "no content found" problem
   - Fixed URL with parameters cannot find extension"

Jim, would it be possible to use the playback functionnality of my Popcorn device (renderer) and controlling with MC on my laptop (Controller)?
Is there any other way to do what I want?

Yes, I did, and it appears the most important setting was "Omit Host portion...".  If I checked this option, it didn't seem to matter much about the "DLNA" option, but if I unchecked it, then I would get "No Server" on the Onkyo.

Jim,

I don't manage to control my Popcorn Hour C200 with MC (build 137).
I have updated the firmaware of my Popcorn.

I can use MC as a DLNA server though. I can see and play all the playlist/smartlist I set up in MC on my PCH C200.

In brief, MC works well as a server but not as a controller.

I want to play (stream) my music which is on my laptop PC to the PCH C200 (DLNA renderer) with MC (DLNA controller).

Laptop (with MC)   == Wifi ==>   PCH C200   == Optical ==> Audio Receiver ==> Loudspeaker

I understand that this configuration is possible with DLNA technology. Could you please confirm. Thanks.

The PCH may lack the ability.  Not all renderers can be controlled by other software.  Can anything else control it?

The play-to (push music) functionality of Windows Media Player 12 is capable of controlling the Popcorn Hour C-200 according to a user in the NMT forum.
I'm still waiting for other users to reply to my post. I will let you know.

Does the play-to functionality of WMP 12 use the DLNA standard?

I'm still hoping to be able to use MC for controlling my Popcorn Hour as MC (MJ) has been my audio player/organiser/tagger of choice for more than 7 years now  :)

So is there something in the specs of a device we should be looking for to tell us if is should be a DLNA device that MC can push music to?

I'm looking at one of these http://www.kogan.com.au/shop/kogan-wi-fi-digital-radio-ipod-docking-station/  I know it is uPnP so it can browse the library but there doesn't seem to be any mention of DLNA.

But then there is no mention of DLNA in the WD TV Live specs either or in the user manual but it supports it.

Is this very much hit and miss at the moment, or are there clues to indicate DLNA support?

Thanks
Richard

i just upgraded to window 7 and tried WMP12 against the popcorn hour c200 and it works well.

havn't had any joy with media center yet (build 140).

Wonder if WMP12 is doing something non-dnla specific as I heard that c200 is not actually dnla certified...

any ideas why media center can't control c200 rendering?

For anybody interested, there is a list of DLNA certified products.

http://www.dlna.org/products/

The radio I referenced in an earlier post uses the Venice 6.2 from Frontier (and so does the OXX digital radio) which is DLNA certified, so I'm hoping it will work with MC.

That was true in earlier builds, but it shouldn't be necessary in build 140 or later.

Hi Jim - I tried the settings for encoding as you suggested and turn on all DNLA options, but I'm still only getting 5 seconds of balnk playback before the playback repeats once more into the 5 second silence loop. Tried sending file from local disk as well as my NAS (where majority of my audio files reside).

If I get some time  I'll try capture some wiresharks - do a compare of WMP12 vs JRiver.

you can see the 5 second EOF looop quite clearly above -the root cause of the empty file seems to be a 500 internal server error - i'm not sure which server is producing this thoough - the MC or PCH? probably MC as PCH just acting as remote rendering client?

note, that when i've previously cued up a file and played through WMP12 MC can quite happily control playback of this, but obviously not able to play the song you actually instructed it to...

any ideas?

Any progress on subtitle and thumbnail support for the LG BD390 ?

I tried to turn on the "Convert Video" option in the DLNA settings to see that subtitles would be streamed, but when that option is turned on, my LG BD390 does not play any video anymore. The message is "Cannot Play File".

To what are the videos converted and/or is this configurable ?

Just for your information that could be useful when checking subtitle support for the LG BD390:

When I use Nero MediaHome 4 , subtitles work correctly and thumbnails are shown for audio/video/images.

I looked around how Nero MediaHome works and found the following:
Information about subtitles is transmitted in the description of the resource.

So I think when looking at Nero MediaHome, you could find the solution to support Subtitles and Thumbnails for the LG BD390

Please let me know if you need any help from my side for testing.

I can report that the DLNA works perfectly with my new Onkyo TX-NR5007 mega receiver. I was very pleased to see cover art show up too. Now I wish all my receivers in the new house were network receivers!
{EDIT} I spoke to soon - there's something wrong when MC acts as controller. If I "send' an mp3 (only format tried) to play on the receiver, it shows as playing, the receiver shows it as playing, but there's no sound! After about 15 seconds playback stops or restarts. Any ideas, anyone?

Samsung C5500 Blu-ray player works with MC15.0.18 or above.  Here's a thread on the player and similar Samsung players at AVSForum (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1237704).

The latest build had a change for Plugplayer that might affect this.  It's on the MC15 board.

hiya, i have some basic questions about DLNA which I hope are appropriate for this thread:

1. connecting a DLNA device with MC makes it show up as a Zone. Can I play to multiple zones concurrently, and *in sync*, ie. across my house wirelessly? I'm currently using Airfoil with an Airport Express and Airfoil Speakers on for this, but I'd like to have something within MC.

2. do I need anything other than my MC server, and the DLNA client (JRiver ID) for this to work?

thanx,

shiraz

You can play to multiple zones / devices at the same time.  Sync is possible but not very accurate.

You don't need the ID.  Any DLNA Renderer should work.

Thanks.

I was finally able to control my Popcorn C200 with Media Center.
For that, I upgraded to MC15 and updated the firmware on my Popcorn.

I experience some lag (about 5 seconds) when I click on play (or next song) which I think is quite long yet acceptable.
What I think less acceptable is when one song finished, the following on my playlist starts after 5 seconds as well.
Is there any way for the buffer to start a few seconds before one song ends in order to have no gap between songs?

Otherwise, I can pause and play again with no lag at all.

The capability to play to multiple zones / devices at the same time is very nice. Now I can play music on my home theater system for my girlfriend when I listen to my own music on my pc with my headspeakers. Very cool indeed :)

Well, except for the lag between the songs I'm satisfied with the dlna/upnp capabilities of MC. Thank you very much to JRiver team.

Request for JRiver team (yes, one more) : could you make a webOS application for my Palm Pre? Like this, my smartphone can control my PC, which in its turn can control my media box which is connected to my home theater sound system. Wooooah!!!

The renderer MAY already be requesting the subtitle file. If you view the log as you are trying to play a video, preferable an mpeg2 file, do you see the renderer request a file other than the mpeg?? It might show up as something like F12305.1230.sub or F12305.1230.srt. I see PCH does this even when not explicitly given a url for it in the content directory. It'd be useful to know if this is some sort of common behavior.

Are you talking about the DLNA Renderer ? Because I'm using the DLNA Server.
My LG BD390 uses the DLNA Server, I turned on the logging and tried with several formats (avi, mpeg, etc.), none of them show F12305.1230.srt files, only the F12305.1230.avi files

And the srt files are there with the same name of the movie in the same folder, in MC itself, the subtitles play.
Ofcourse "DLNA Extra" is turned on, because thumbnails do work properly

Yes, I meant that perhaps the renderer was already requesting the .srt files (which is what the PCH does) and we just needed to tweak the http server a bit to serve them. It appears however that yours needs the subs url supplied in the content directory.

I did add the subs to the resource list. If you turn on "present subtitle resources" in the advanced options it will do this. You could also try the "present caption resources" switch (separately). It works on most devices that support separate subtitles but there is still a subtle problem with some players I'm trying to decipher...

Matt has a Philips Streamium NP2500 that works nicely. That is made to connect to an amp. Philips also appears to have DLNA audio devices with amp and speakers included in the device.

Just to add to the list, I got myself a Boxee Box and while the Boxee team screwed up the UI design (they had a great UI in the beta but changed it for worse and for no apparent reason) but the good news is that it works great with MC as a DLNA client.

I just purchased an LG BD570.  So far it works great as a controller, being able to play content from my MC15 library located on my PC. But it does not show up as a zone in MC, so I can not control it from my PC. While this function is not absolutely necessary, it would be extremely handy at times. Does anyone know how to get this to work, or is this an example of "not all renderers can be controlled by MC?"

Probably.  We're off this week, but please repost after the first of the year.

Make sure your copy of MC is up to date.  15.0.171 is on the download page.

Okay. Bumping this to the top.

After playing around with the box and getting pretty familiar with its features and limitations, I'm pretty sure my original assumption was correct, but it would be nice if anyone could confirm that, or tell me I'm wrong and how to go about fixing the issue.

I am running the latest version of MC15.

I haven't seen a BD player yet that shows up as a controllable renderer. The intel upnp tools are really useful for checking out the capabilities of a device. We have a LG BD player (not your model but close), a Sony BDP-S570 and a Samsung BD-C6500 none of which are controllable.

Does anyone know whether any of these DLNA boxes support anything above 16/44.1.

I succesfully got an Airport Express working using the DPoweramp utility, but only 16/44.1 turned up at the amp.  That could be a limition of either the Airport or DBpoweramp

Any ideas?

Hello to all, just discovered MC today. I'm testing it with a Pioneer VSX-1021-K HT Receiver with DLNA 'Audio Renderer' capability. It shows album art and some file info also (Artist/Album/Genre/Bit Rate/..). It doesn't function as a Video Renderer, but that's not what its supposed to do. So far, so good!

In case it helps, I've bought a few of the LG DP1W Multimedia Players to get a friends audio system up and running over Christmas.

They seem to work well, along with a couple of zones using the WD Live units.  Interestingly, the LG DP1W wireless operation seems to work at a better range than that of the WD Live, maybe in part because of the size of the unit.  Perhaps the antenna is able to be made larger and perform better.

The main application for them in this system is for audio.

And old thread probably worth bumping to mention that DishNetwork's Hopper system now supports DLNA push.  MC sees it as a renderer and can control playback.  Audio and Image playback works, but video does not yet work in push mode.

Pretty cool.

There is a problem though - the unit presents a dialog asking for permission to play a media file.  This locks the MC UI until the dialog is dismissed.

Could you try disabling SetNext support for that zone? (DLNA Controller options).

It doesn't seem to make a difference.  In either mode, the dialog is presented, and if I don't confirm, MC's will hang for about 8 seconds and then present the "There was a problem controlling ..." dialog.  Once dismissed, the same thing occurs again.  It has happened a third time, but I'm not sure what causes this, as it seems the general case is for MC to retry only once after the first failure.

If this is a big No No, I can contact the Dish folks via their Beta channels.

It's always going to stall at the point unless one can disable the approval prompt on the Dish box.
Now, the first message should probably not require a OK. Still though you are going to get the "something went wrong" message.
You might try the silent mode to get rid of the error messages...
