A new version (25.0.118) of JRiver for Android that has some support for Android TV should be on the Play Store now.
Video is not yet working.
We had some trouble getting Google to approve it. They reported crashes on two of twelve machines tested.
Notes on installing
Play Store Link (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jriver.mediacenter)
Using a web browser with the Play Store to install (https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,122820.msg850853.html#msg850853)
Developer Mode must be disabled or one of the USB ports won't work.
-
I can see the latest version but the Play Store still says it is not compatible with my TVs or the nVidia Shield.
-
Exciting!!
I am out of town right now - but can't wait to go home and try this on Sony TV (which runs Android TV) underneath.
Osho
-
Please try now.

Yup now showing up as Android TV Compatible. Will have to test when back at home.

Where did you see that?

If you have an Android TV device linked to your account, you can also see it in the store listing, eg. here:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jriver.mediacenter&hl=en
It'll show a list of devices its compatible with, and it now lists the Shield TV as well.
-
From a web browser, you can go to the Playstore, Find the app, press on the Install(ed) button and there is a drop down list that tells you what you have installed it on and what you can install it on.
-
Interesting.
It says it is compatible with my "Sony BRAVIA 4K 2015" TV as well.
Of course, if I was to run it there I would want to run it as a Client of my HTPC, as it isn't much use running a MC Server on my TV.
Running as a Client isn't possible just yet, is it? How far away would that be?
-
It took me a while to do that. Here's what worked.
As jmone said, use a web browser to go to play.google.com and search for "JRiver for Android".
The trick is that I had to do it on Windows, using Chrome. Other browsers would probably work, but it didn't work when I tried it in Chrome on a Pixelbook (ChromeOS). Chrome helpfully opened the Android Play Store App and the rest of these instructions didn't work.
Once you find it, click on the Installed button to find the device you want to install it on.
-

I agree, I'm looking for a "good" Andriod TV client for MC that has these features. https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,122841.0.html
-
I was able to install it by using the web browser method above to tell the Play Store to install it.
It runs and is pretty quick.
I couldn't get it to import anything, but that's because I can't get a drive mounted. I was able to mount an Id but nothing showed up on importing.
In MC on Windows, the Shield shows up with MC's Library Server and I can load it. But it's still empty because of the import problem.
It's great progress, Brad. Thanks.

Can you do a JRMark on the Shield?
-
Can you do a JRMark on the Shield?
I don't think it's possible with the current version.
-
I was able to install it through the play store on my shield. No media on the shield itself, so no way to test it, but that's cool!
-
I had a problem importing that may have been related to the device being in Developer Mode. In that mode, one of the USB ports is disabled.
-
I was going to ask what is the point of this if it isn't a client
I then saw https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,122572.0.html but I am still none the wiser. Slightly confusing to say the least.
-
Here is what I found so far on the Shield:
- No issues in installing it
- Imported Content from a USB stick but it did not appear in the Library on the Shield
- Copied Content from a USB stick to the internal storage and imported it. I could see and play a FLAC file but none of the Video Files
- Playlists don't show any content on the Shield (Like Recently Imported)
Using a Windows PC MC Instance I could see the Shield Library and Load it:
- Flac file from Local or USB Storage would not play .... "Something went wrong with playback"
- Video Files appear as Data
- Low / Medium Bitrate video files from Local or USB Storage load quickly and play fine
- High Bitrate video (eg 150mbps) plays from Local or USB Storage takes a long time to load but then play fine
Due to lack of space I did not try a BD Structure.

I too want the Instance to be able to load a library from another MC Instance (just like all my HTPCs), however I do get the point that MC on Android could be a server (like with Windows, MAC, Linux etc). I'm thinking that at present a Android based MC Server would be very under powered compared to a Windows box but these devices are always gaining in processing power and storage capacity so it may be an option for a plug and play MC instance (bit like the MC ID but based on ARM at some point).
-
Also, if file association does not seem to be set to offer JRiver as an app. In File Explorer on the Shield, if I select a file, it will offer me a range of players, but not JRiver.

This did work for me. I had trouble until Brad found that the Shield was in Developer Mode and turned that off. In that mode, one of the USB ports won't work for mounting a USB stick.
-
I was able to install from the web browser without issue. I won't have time to go check the Shield until later.
My new Shield should arrive tomorrow and my old one will get passed to a family member. As soon as MC can act as a client for video I guarantee there will be one more sale.
-
So i just downloaded this to my Shield 2019 Pro through the normal Playstore process, no web browser needed. So excited to see this, come through. Though of course this should be looked at more as an Alpha build than a finished product.
1. It played all the audio formats I threw at it. SACD DSD, Hi-Rez Flac (24-192, 24-96, 24-88), and of course regular FLAC. (I have not tested video yet.)
2. The sound quality is MUCH BETTER than the MrMC I have been using.
3. I did have to disable developer options in order to get it to recognize a USB storage device.
4. It needs to support ASAP either network locations, or better (for me anyways) see the mounted network storage that is part of the Shield/Android TV OS (Found under Storage, Mount Network Storage.
5. In playback mode the Previous and Next buttons are not working, clicking them does nothing. However, the FF/FB buttons are working.
5. I see that my Topping 50s DAC is still receiving receiving DSD signals as 24-192, is it possible in Android to pass DSD directly? My dac definitely supports this.
6. Ultimately, I hope you create a way for users to do a trial of the app on the Play Store as the sound quality difference is immediate and I think that will help make JRiver the defacto standard of Audio/Video Playback on Android TV.
I am willing to help out on testing/bug finding, new features if you need it.
-
Video is now working and will be in the next build.

The links in this thread and from the "Growing Network of Apps" thread both take me to JRiver for Android (no mention of TV).
I was able to install it on my Sony XF90 Android TV but it crashed when i tried to get it to scan the folders that the TV can see (USB hard disk with TV recordings).
Also, the description on the store says it will work as a media renderer, but there are no options in the app to set that up. I guess that is a future feature.

Hi folks, I've installed JRiver on my Nvidia Shield and it started up just fine. Only problem is, is that all my music, (and other media), is on a Synology NAS. I know development is ticking the boxes as they can, so no rush on this, but it would be great if my NAS could be used as a source for my library. The NAS is already mounted on the NVidia Shield, as I'm currently using it for a Plex server and it works just fine. Plex doesn't handle DSD files, so I was hoping to get JRiver up and running, at least as a music front, on my NVidia Shield. Thanks for your time and hard work.

We have similar needs. I have all my content on a Netgear NAS, audio and video. I am able to connect using JRiver for Android to a Windows based MC library on my network, which in turn grabs stuff off my NAS. I also am using Plex Server on my Shield via NAS for video as you are. I'm sure you are not happy with Plex and Audio like me. It's awful. Let's compare notes as we go along....

Will do. Here's hoping the next few updates yields us something special. Cheers!

Can anyone tell me what the current status of video playback is like on Shield devices right now?
- Is playback native or transcoded?
- Is IVTC supported to output DVD at 24p?
- Is NVIDIA's AI upscaling supported?
I just bought an Apple TV 4K for media streaming, but am finding library navigation and metadata handling to be a nuisance.
It's looking like I'd have to set up a Plex server to handle metadata, and rearrange my library's filesystem to suit its rigid (and inferior) structure.
I'd much rather be using a JRiver client that loads custom views to make things easy to navigate (and ideally support resuming playback across all devices) similar to the views I use for JRemote.

Video still doesn't play back on the Shield. At least not when connected to a library server.

Oh. Looks like I'll be stuck with the Apple TV then.
I didn't realize support was quite this early. Aside from the metadata situation, and having trouble getting a 24Hz output from DVDs, at least the Apple TV plays back everything I throw at it without transcoding.

It's getting there (https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,123784.msg857053.html#msg857053). But it's still very early days.
-
It's looking good.
I prefer it to the Phone version ;)
Can't wait for more functionality - I can get rid of that other pesky streaming app.
-
I've installed JRiver on my Shield a while ago and I can clearly hear better sound through it. But like others have stated, the Shield has basically no storage to speak of. I have all my music on a Windows 10 machine and shared with my network. The Shield has the ability to mount this network storage in the settings, so I can see music and video on most of my Shield apps including VLC and MrMC and can play it back. But JRiver does not support this.
So until JRiver for Android TV supports network access, or the ability to access the internally mounted network drives it's useless to us with a device that does not have storage onboard.

You can load an MC library from another machine. Will that work?
Make sure you're up to date.

Greetings:
I am always up to date when it comes to JRiver for android installed on cell and Sony bravia tvs.
The library loads on cell phone.
But on tv(s), it is a no go.
I keyed in my credentials, but library does not load.
In the vein of this issue, can the engineers try to slap the android tv gui code on Jremote2 , so that we test the tv gui on Jremote2.
At the moment, the only way to load MC via tv is through Mo4media and vlc.
Thanks.
George

What type of Android TV device is it? Is Android built into the TV or is a secondary device like a Shield? What happens when you try to load a library the library? Do you get a failure message or does it say it was successful?

[Running a Shield Pro TV 2019]
I loaded just about all my files onto an external usb3 SSD drive (about 800GB). It's 50% Redbook Flac, the rest a mix of Hi-Rez PCM and DSD files. When I import only about twenty albums show up. I have had most of these files in a JRiver library on a Win10 machine before without any problems. These files are playing great through MrMC so it's not a problem of Shield access.
My windows JRiver license is from 2014 version 20. I don't use Windows for playback these days. But I do use it as a network share for my files. I could load JRiver on my current Win 10, but I don't want to pay for another license just to test this. Also will DSD play through network this way direct?

Hello:
Sony Bravia (2015,2016,2019 ).
65x850C, 65x930D, 75x950g and 85x950g.
These Sonys come with built in Android stuff.
l also have Nvidia shields 2019 and 2020 .
On my cell Sony Xperia 1, the library loads successfully, and I am able to watch movies or play audio.
the playback of mkvs are not really smooth.
for Mo4media, either on the phone or directly from the bravia tvs. I have to use vlc for android, also installed on phone and tvs to playback these movies.
Not that VLC is perfect, but it is the best android player so far, in that, the menu options let you adjust the playback speeds.
We have noticed some 2080p bluray will not playback smoothly same with uhd titles without adjusting the speeds.
also note that a few other Android video players on the Android tvs can not and will not playback some 1080p and uhd titles, and these android players do not have a way to adjust the playback speeds.
This is where VLC for Android shines, though NOT perfect either.
You can even bookmark by Time or Chapters, set timer etc.
Now let us go back to JRiver for Android tv.
I am on the latest version as I compose this.
It will not load the library. It does see the server.
It asks for the network credentials, that is it.
On the other hand, the version
installed on the cell phone loads the library ok.
Regardless where it is installed, outside of Xperia 1, it does not work.
Thanks.
George.

Sony XBR77-A9G (2019) runs Android TV. JRiver App hangs on loading library.
-
I still cannot load a library on my Shield. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling. I have tried two different libraries. My main library and a much smaller library on this computer that I use for testing. I can connect to the libraries from other devices including PC and phone (Jremote2 and MO4media)
When I first try to connect I get asked for login credentials then a spinning wheel. Sometimes MC will then go to the home screen like it loaded the library (it didn't) sometimes the wheel just keeps spinning.
-
Try a small library as a test. Loading takes a while if it's a big library.
-
The small library I use is only 427 audio files. Is that small enough?

Have you tried to disable authentication for either library server as a test?
-
I turned off authentication on the small library and it worked. Sorry, I thought I had tried that.
Question: Is it safe to have media sharing on without authentication enabled?
-
Sony XBR77-A9G (2019) runs Android TV. JRiver App hangs on loading library.
I was able to get same library, attempted above, to load on ShieldTV device. Not sure if by design, but the Shield device now appears as an additional library server on the network. Can the server function be turned off on the various end point devices?
-
As I said above turning off authentication allowed me to load a library on my Shield. The problem is that movies don't show up. I imported 3 (2 HD and 1 UHD) into the library and on the PC and other remotes connected to that library the movies are there. The weird part is that while clicking around somewhat randomly I was in Now Playing on the Shield and the UHD movie started playing.
-
I just installed this, but I can't see my media servers. It only appears to support local files. But the description said it could play media from DLNA servers.
VLC can, but I thought JRiver may offer me a better experience.
-
You can load a server under Tools. They sometimes take time to show up.
-
To the best of my knowledge, it only finds, displays, and loads JRiver MC Library Servers, not DLNA Servers.
It certainly doesn't show the DLNA Servers that I am running in my two MC installations. Just the Library Servers.
-

Yes, that is what I am looking for, Roderick. I have Asset UPnP server (specifically designed for music) and Universal Media Server running, and I can't see it. I have Serviio and Plex media server running on another computer.
As I said, VLC can see them all.
I am deciding whether to uninstall it and get a refund or wait for it to be fixed.
-
The refund window (time) is quite short on the Play Store. Just hours I believe, though I haven't checked. That is controlled by Google, and JRiver can't provide refunds outside of that time.
The Play Store description says that JRiver for Android can work as a DLNA or UPnP Renderer, and it can, I think. I can push audio files from a MC Server installation to JRiver for Android, using MC as the Controller. But I can't tell if that is using UPnP/DLNA or JRiver Media Network. Not without running Wireshark and checking what is being sent between devices.
I can even connect JRemote2 to a MC Server and use JRemote2 as a Controller to output audio to JRiver for Android, which is seen as a Zone in JRemote2. I can then close JRemote2 once I have told it to play tracks, and JRiver for Android continues to play the tracks.
Device Spy, which analyses DLNA devices on a network, does show JRiver for Android as three devices. A UPnP/DLNA Renderer, a DLNA Server, and as a JRiver Library Server.
So Im really not sure if JRiver for Android will meet your needs, as you are specifically using UPnP/DLNA servers, and not JRiver Media Network (Library) servers. The full version of JRiver Media Center can certainly see DLNA Servers, but I don't know when or if JRiver for Android will see them. My DLNA Servers are all MC DLNA Servers, so I can't test third party DLNA Servers.
Maybe JRiver can clarify if DLNA Servers are supposed to show up in JRiver for Android. Or you could search the forum for information on that, perhaps in announcements of JRiver for Android.
Note: Any DLNA Renderers such as VLC, BubbleUPnP and lots of others, should see your DLNA Servers. So the JRiver for Android DLNA Renderer should see them theoretically. Maybe that is an oversight by JRiver, or just a timing thing.

What exactly can BubbleUPnP do for me?
I have read about it, but can't quite understand its capabilities.
-
It has a lot of capabilities, including acting as a DLNA Renderer and Controller, which is how I use it. I sometimes test Chromecast with it as well. It is free to run, with some restrictions. So using it is the best way to understand it.
It has support available through Google Groups, and a thread on the XDA forum. Google will help you find those. Bubblesoft is the vendor. Google the name and you will learn lots.
-
I can't get BubbleUPnP to install on Android TV.
I keep getting a "Not Installed" message. :'(
-
You didn't say you were trying to install onto an Android TV device.
The Play Store shouldn't have even offered BubbleUPnP for installation on an Android TV device. It certainly doesn't for my Sony TV. Were you trying to sideload or something?
-
You didn't say you were trying to install onto an Android TV device.
It is the "JRiver for Android TV" thread. I thought that would be a given.
Never mind. 😃
-
You are correct. ;) I run JRiver for Android on my phone most of the time, and don't always check the thread title.
Also, as I said, BubbleUPnP isn't even offered in the Play Store on my Sony TV.
