Title: New NUC Id - no audio
Post by: markgough on January 02, 2021, 02:57:39 pm
Hello, I'm hoping someone can help me get the audio playback working on a newly purchased NUC Id device. I'm trying to use it to play videos on my TV, the video plays perfectly, but there is no audio.

The content is a mix of mkv/iso/mp4 etc. and is stored on an external USB hard drive connected to the NUC. The NUC is connected via HDMI to my television then via audio return to the A/V receiver. I had been using a Windows laptop with MC 27 in the same configuration prior to the NUC and everything worked fine.

All NUC settings are default "out of the box". The Audio Device listed in Audio Options is "Default Audio Device [Direct Sound]. Under Device Settings  "hw:CARD=PCH, DEV=1 [ALSA] HDA Intel PCH…" is pre-selected.

This is the NUC information: Id 25.0.11  MC 26.0.107-2 Engen 1.0.69, NUC 300 7CJYH

I've tried several other options under Device Settings and using headphones in the NUC jack, but still no sound
I've also played the sample mp3 file included on the NUC. Progress shows that it's playing, but again it generates no sound.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Try to separate the problem into pieces.  Connect the HDMI out to the receiver directly, just so you know when you've got sound working.

Play a FLAC file or some other simple audio file.  Get video going later.

Change this in Audio Settings:
All NUC settings are default "out of the box". The Audio Device listed in Audio Options is "Default Audio Device [Direct Sound]. Under Device Settings  "hw:CARD=PCH, DEV=1 [ALSA] HDA Intel PCH…" is pre-selected.

From memory, I believe at least one will be labeled HDMI.

Once sound is working, add the complexity back.  Start with routing sound through the TV to the receiver.

Thanks for the quick response! Great idea about reducing the complexity by dividing the problem.

Unfortunately, I'm unable to attempt your suggestion right now as my old receiver lacks HDMI inputs. A new receiver arrives this week and I'll connect the NUC directly to it via HDMI then. I'll set Device Settings to one of the HDMI options.

I'll post back next weekend when I know more, thanks again.

Alright! You nailed it. The NUC, now connected to the new receiver directly via HDMI, plays both audio and video using the default settings. Thank you very much.

I have one more question for you. In my previous Windows setup, I used Virtual Clone Drive so MC could mount and play my .iso files of DVD images. I've read some discussions in the forums that may be outdated, I can't tell whether the current NUC will play .iso's natively or whether I need to do something else. I have many, so before I import them in MC, I thought I'd ask for your suggestions. Thanks Again!

You could start a new thread on that.   I don't know.  Most people rip DVD's to mkv now.  On Linux, I don't know the answer.

OK thanks, I'll try in the Linux section.

On Linux you'll have to rip your ISOs to MKV files. Media Center on Windows relies on the system component(s) for ISO playback, which doesn't exist in Mac or Linux for Media Center to use.

I use makemkv (comes in a Linux flavour as well) to rip DVD, BD and iso files to mkv.

Handy piece of software. "Free" if you don't mind updating and getting the revised trial key from month to month.

Thank you both for your replies. I'll look into the MakeMKV option.
