Title: Reading User Tags (back) into Library? (Solved)
Post by: dbaldock9 on November 23, 2023, 11:58:13 pm
Back in 2016 - 2017, when my PC was running Windows 7 Pro, I ripped a few hundred of my CDs, using Media Center.
While setting up the Library, I created several User Tags - to store info in the format that I preferred.

Before Microsoft stopped support for Windows 7, I switched my PCs back to Linux.
Sometime earlier this year, the Library got corrupted, with duplicate track entries.
When I created a new Library by re-scanning the music file locations, it now has the correct file count - but my User Tags didn't get read into the Library.

Can anyone help, by describing the correct procedure to automatically read User Tags from the music tracks, back into the Library?
Thanks!

dbaldock9 - If all of those "User tags" are setup in MC then using the Library Tools >> Update Library (from tags) option should repopulate those fields/tags in the Library for every selected track.

That was the first thing I tried.
I can see the Tag info in the tracks using exiftool on the command line, but they're not there in the "Manage Library Fields", to select in the "Playing Now" view of MC 31.
In the previous Library - all of the User Tags were created, and visible, in "Manage Library Fields", as well as being selectable in the "Playing Now" view.

You first need to create the fields yourself in MC, with the exact same names. Then MC will import the data into them. The Import process does not create the fields.

OK, thanks for clarifying this.

One thing complicating the issue, is that I didn't remember the specific properties I had assigned to the different User Tags - but I was just able to import an old Library backup, which does show the tag info.
I'll need to write down the tag details - then reload the current Library and re-create the tags - before re-running Update Library (from tags).

Once I've tried this, I'll let you know how it went.

zybex - Once I re-created the tags in the Library, the data was imported from the tracks.

Thanks!
