Title: MC 24 not playing 5.1 wav or dts
Post by: sergioz on May 01, 2018, 03:16:16 pm
HI! Just installed MC 24 in Linux Mint 18.3, all good. Restored Backup from MC 23 (library and settings): all good... maybe  :-\

The issue is: I've already installed MC 23 and he does play dts audio files (saved in .dts or .wav, real 6 channels or fake 2 channels... all good) but in the same installation of Linux mint MC 24 play anything but that.
The restore of the backup from MC 23 seems ok (zones configuration for 2, 6 and 5.1 channels ecc) and btw and don't remember the need of specific settings in MC 23 to be able to play dts audio files.
What am I missing?

Thank in advance for any help

p.s.
MC 24 actually play correctly "normal" wav files and flac 5.1

Did you set bitstreaming?

Since I restored the backup from MC 23 the setting is bitstreaming yes (via HDMI) and that works perfectly on MC 23, same machine, same system installation.

But I've just disabled it for a try and the result is the same: nothing. Seems a bug...

Did you try rebooting?

Check the settings for DSP studio in each of the zones.
You can look in MC23 and compare them to MC24.
MC23 and 24 can coexist without issues.

As you can see the black one is DSP of MC 24 and the white is MC 23, if I'm not missing anything they seems the same to me.
MC 23 at the moments plays the wav dts files in both the "normal" 6 channel zone and the 5.1 zone, MC 24 nothing.

But, I repeat, I've not changed manually the settings in MC 24: I've just imported a backup of MC 23.
And the only thing that don't work is this wav 5.1 dts play. Sob.
I really don't see how this can not be a bug.

Anyway thank You Bob :-)

Can you check the Audio device selection and Audio device options in both 23 and 24 and report them back? Thanks..

Audio Device default [Alsa] for both MC23 and 24, as for the options (black windows MC 24, white MC23)

You'll probably want to use a different output other than default [ALSA]. I'd suggest one of the hw: or front: outputs, if you have them.

Thanks for your concern, Awesome, but maybe you can have not read all the posts because in the same machine and same O.S installation MC23 works just fine so what I want is that MC24 must works at least the same.
I know there is many things I can do... I can play those files with VLC media player, I can convert them to 5.1 flac, without loss, with MC23 and then do the play with MC24 but since it is credible that this maybe a bug of MC24 and we pay for the software I hope that in the next updates this issue may be resolved (and/or motivated).
Thanks for your reply.

I don't think you should be using Default ALSA either.
That setting allows your OS to mess with the output.
Pick a hardware device instead.

Can you post a log trying to play such a file?
If my hunch is right, you could try playing any sort of video first, which should install a missing dependency, and then try playing the audio file again?

Thank You Hendrik, I think you can find the only message i get posted in my first post here.
I'll follow your suggestion asap and post the result! :-)

Ok...I think this may be a good idea. I tried to play various  video files , various formats and extensions, and nothing happened but the message

"something went wrong with playback".

If your idea is correct maybe I can try to open a terminal and give the command to verify and install missing dependencies. But this may take a while and I must schedule to do it in 24 hours. I'll surely post the results.

Thank you again Hendrik :-)

Does your box have an internet connection? This is required to install the dependencies for video playback. It should otherwise happen transparently.

Also, you can create a Log file by going to "Help -> Logging" in Media Center, and ticking the "Output to a log file" checkbox. Then try playing a video or your DTS audio file (preferably both for testing) and go back to Help -> Logging and press the "Report problem.." button. It'll create a ZIP file with the log, which you can share with us.

So... it's not a box but a desktop pc that raun linux mint 18.3 cinnamon. There is a monitor 24'  and a tv samsung as secondary monitor.
I've tried to run
"sudo apt-get -f install" and
" sudo apt-get check"
to see If there was a missing dependencies warning but nothing happened.

I'm going to bed. Tomorrow when I come home from work I'll try to create the log file.
Question: is it possible that all this thing is happening because I've MC23 AND MC 24 in the same system installation?

MC downloads it's own dependencies outside of the linux mint apt framework. All that should be required is an internet conneciton.
MC23 and MC24 can totally coexist in the same system. They have their own install directories and user directories.
You might want to check to the plugin folders to see if the dependencies are installed:

In an xterm as the user running MC:

ls -lR ~/.jriver/Media\ Center\ 23/Plugins
ls -lR ~/.jriver/Media\ Center\ 24/Plugins

Note any differences here please.

Omg! Thank you bob... that's it.... there is only the directory "linux_avcodec64" in both the path but the MC24 directory it's empty!!

Can I just copy the MC23 plugins into the MC24 directory or there is a way to download a set of updated ones?

And, yes I think I've been a little bit rude and maybe I am the donkey here, sorry for that...

They have been updated so you can't just use the MC23 ones.
We need to figure out why yours aren't downloading.

Can you try something like a file conversion on a video to force it to download the avcodec stuff?
Right click on a video and do Library Tools->Convert format. Make it convert a video to h264 or some such. You can set the options to not add the file to the library and leave the original in place.
Then see if the avcodec stuff is downloaded.

Also make sure that the user running MC24 is the owner of the directory tree and that it's writeable. For example:
Code: [Select]
touch ~/.jriver/Media\ Center\ 24/Plugins/linux_avcodec64/fooshould return without an error.

Ok, solved.

First things first: my bad.
When I've installed MC24 the settings of the firewall was very strong and aggressive and the same when some day ago I tried to play a video files.
I've just  read in the forum how a similar situation was handled so I just tried to play a video file with the firewall not so aggressive and MC 24 downloaded quietly the updated libav codec plug-ins. Now all is played quiete well and I noticed that with the updated codecs MC24 correctly identify the number of channels of the wav dts files that MC23 did not :-)

Thank you so much ALL of you for your patience :-)
