Title: Too many files???
Post by: lcdlover on August 20, 2012, 10:42:43 am
This may not be the problem, but I needed a title. Recently, MC has become unstable, resulting in crashes. The crashes are characterized by white screen and partial or full paralysis of all running programs including task manager.  This caused me basically to pull the plug on the whole machine at one point. After that (This was when I was using MC15.0.174) I lost the library. I restored the library through file/library/restore library and that when the real trouble began. Upon playing a track, no information would be displayed (playing from audio/albums, I have now learned I can safely play from "playing now" and track info will be displayed normally). So I opted to upgrade to MC17 for $21. I successfully transferred the library. The audio library has 456,599 clips. Total library has 610,385. Is this overloading the system?
Second question while I'm here: how can I transfer MC to my car computer w/o bringing it into the house. It has no internet currently? I copied th whole file but on set-up it shut down saying JRtools not there or something.
Sorry if my descriptions are vague.

610,000 files might be a new record for a real library.  Wow!

We routinely test with a few hundred thousand files, and take speed seriously (http://jriver.com/speed.html).

The program should run fine with that many files, although some actions might be slower than with a smaller library.  A fast computer (Help > Benchmark > JRMark of over 3000) will help.

If you have a reproducible crash with v17, please post a step-by-step to reproduce it.  You could also use Help > Logging to get an error report.

Take a look at the topic called "Stability" on our wiki.

600,000 files isn't a problem.

Use a USB thumb drive or similar to move the install package you downloaded from our site.  See the "Purchase" link above for information on installing the license.

Hi and thank you! Yes I'm a music collector (wife thinks I'm batso!) and I LOVE MC!!! I'll be reading those recommended pages and trying to pin down more info. Meanwhile I do have two or three log files (zip files apparently) of the crashes. Where do I e-mail them?

Thanks for the log.

The crash is happening in G-Force (G-Force_JMC.dll).

Maybe you could run with no visualizations for a while and see if it solves the problem?

Take a look at the topic called "Stability" on our wiki.
And on that page, you would find:

"2. Disable plug-ins and other third party software that you use with MC."
