I am using a projector with an anamorphic lens to remove the black bars from widescreen movies. Recently I tried watching some foreign films with the latest build (29.86) and the subtitles are no longer visible. They remain in the black bars, which are not displayed on my screen. I tried multiple movies and multiple shift percentages but the subtitles remain at the bottom of the screen.
I made sure to select at least one widescreen movie that I have watched before, “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon” in 4k just in case some movies don’t support shifting subtitles.

I tried Crouching Tiger with build 28 and the shifting works.

What kind of subtitles are those? Text, or bitmap?
Also can you describe your video settings?
-
I am using Red October MadVR. I assume the subtitles are text because they appear at the bottom of the screen by default. Only one of the movies I tested showed the subtitles in a different location for each character. Is there anything else I can use to identity the type of subtitle?

Try setting video to JRVR.
You can use MC's On Screen Display to zoom in on any video and the setting will be remembered.
-
Will I lose my MadVR settings when I change to JRVR?

Will I lose my MadVR settings when I change to JRVR?
No, if you switch back to madVR you still have your settings.
-
I don't think any subtitle behavior with madVR should've changed on our side. At least I can't think of anything else. All video development in MC29 was focused on JRVR.
-
Subtitle shift works fine in JRVR mode.

After recently creating SRT subtitles and adding them to the associated video using MKVToolnix, I can confirm that Media Center (v30) still refuses to shift them if madVR is in use. As previously mentioned here, switching to JRVR resolves that issue (I'm happy to use JRVR, so that's not a problem for me).
