Title: What's your oldest APE file [feedback wanted]
Post by: Matt on February 01, 2013, 10:35:23 am
The latest APE SDK had this change:
Changed: Removed support for old Monkey's Audio 3.92 and earlier files (it hasn't been possible to make these files for over ten years -- use an old copy of Monkey's Audio to convert these files to the latest format if you have any).

I made the change to make porting Monkey's Audio to OSX easier.  My hope was that the legacy format support code would no longer be needed.

However, I just heard from Jim that several of his files are older than this and won't play.

My guess is that legacy support needs to be added back, at least for Windows.

However, before doing that I would like to understand the scope of issue a little better.  Would users with APE files show the 'Compression' column in Media Center, sort by it, and report the oldest version APE file you have?

Thanks for the help.

3.60, 3.80 ...

Anything below 3.94 won't play.  3.94 files do play.

I have six 3.97's and the rest are 3.99.

It sorts by the compression level string "High" "Normal" etc.  ( I love "Insane" as a technical description :) ). rather than by version number.   I see some 3.96 and 3.97 as I scroll it...

MJ8 probably uses an old APE encoder.  Maybe MJ12 also.

Fast (3.97)
Normal(3.97)
Normal (3.98)
Normal (3.99)

I ripped my first ape files in 2001 with MJ8. Where the files converted to something newer at some later point?
During some library import while upgrading?

When I imported my library some days ago, one folder of APE files did not import.

Today, due to a different issue, I cleared my library and imported again.  This time all APE files imported.  I checked the ones that did not import, and they were 3.80 .

So, those legacy APE files were only present in an MC18 library IF the files were imported prior to legacy APE support being removed.

By the way, a handful of FLAC files did not import both times.   What possible issues can I check concerning the files, that would make the FLAC files not import ?

I don't know about the FLAC files, but regarding your APE importing oddities, I know the answer:

18.0.128 (2/1/2013)

5. Changed: Restored support for legacy APE file playback.

Also, you might not know this (since you're relatively new here), but Matt is the guy who wrote APE.

Yes, I was implying all that.  I was just pointing out that he was asking us to look for old APE files in Media Center after removing support for old APE files in Media Center - so naturally, they did not appear.

As far as the .FLAC files, I am just asking what possible reasons Media Center has for rejecting them, so I can check on that....

Hah, yes, good point.  ;D

But this thread was started (on the Beta board) before the change was made, so there was opportunity to check.  I think he was just trying to gauge how common they were out there.  Oops, no that's wrong, it was right after.  In any case, you can always roll back a few builds and test.

Some people replied, but before the thread was even stale, he'd decided to add the support back in.  I think less because people needed it and couldn't just convert, and more out of pride (it'd be wounding his baby, after all, even if it was his ugly old baby that apparently requires some special support to keep going).

As far as the .FLAC files, I am just asking what possible reasons Media Center has for rejecting them, so I can check on that....

Sorry, can't help.  I haven't seen that, but honestly, almost all of my FLACs were either made with MC, or were bought directly from artists fairly recently.

I haven't seen a lot of complaints about that.  Perhaps you have some oddballs?  Is there anything in the logs from the import attempts (search them using the Filename as the search is the easiest way to search).

Is there a log with more details than just the one that appears at the end of the import (if you check the box for details) ?   That one just has a list of ones that "failed" but doesn't say why it failed.

The further update is that I then did a "Run Auto-Import Now" and it ran again for half an hour and imported 1424 more files, all from the previous "Failed" list, including most, if not all, of the failed flac files, and hundreds of CUE files that reference WAV files that are no longer present - so they have a reason to fail - but it imported them on the second try.   Weird.

Oh, yeah there is.

Help > Logging.

You can just click the Report a Problem button and then examine the ZIP file it makes for you, or you can go to C:\Users\kstuart\AppData\Roaming\J River\Media Center 18 and view them directly.

They're dense, though.

The first number is a milliseconds since launch counter (I think it is milliseconds, anyway, maybe CPU ticks or something).  Then the second number is the thread ID, and then the rest is the "category" and logging message.

You can find the imports, though... Here are some lines from my current log:

They don't always say why, but sometimes you can find clues about what is going on.  And, if not, you can at least spot the record of it, and show it to Matt to ask for help.

PS.  All of my import errors are CUE files with missing FLAC partners, as you described, and I'm too lazy to clean them up.
