Title: How to Upgrade to MC19 -- Any Questions?
Post by: JimH on August 13, 2013, 09:41:56 am
Upgrade Instructions and Links (http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Upgrade_to_MC19)

Features of MC19 (http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=81980.0)

JRiver Media Center 19 is available on the Download Page (http://www.jriver.com/download.html).  This is always our most stable build.

Newer builds may be available in a thread near the top of the MC19 board.  The thread will have a title like "JRiver Media Center 19.0.xx -- Available Here".  Download it, install it, and restore (http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Restoring_a_License) your MC19 license if necessary.

If you purchased MC18 after July 1, 2013, you received an MC19 license that will work with both versions.  Just install MC19.  It will find the license and your data.  It would be a good idea to back up your data before installing MC19.

Download and install the program first.  Instructions for restoring your license are on our wiki (http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Restoring_a_License).

If you haven't purchased a previous version of JRiver Media Center, the price is $49.98.  Download and install first.  Then purchase from the Help menu in the program.

Every time I upgrade to a new version I have to fix my library because the new version does automatic library updating tasks without asking me, for example renaming my Scandinavian tv series and movies to English titles. Every time it's a year since the last time, so I don't remember exactly how to avoid it. I know, I should write it up. I have a hard time understanding why software is written to make changes/updates to a perfectly working library without asking.

How can I make the upgrade process as smooth as possible and make sure MC 19 leaves my library 100% the way it is? Or is it finally fixed in this version?

And yes, I do know it doesn't touch the MC 18 library, but imports/converts it to MC 19, which I assume will use a slightly different format than the previous version.

MC19 will convert your MC18 data (or MC17).  It won't rename anything.  Neither would MC18, but maybe you imported fresh instead of converting.

18 to 19 was the smoothest upgrade for me so far. Kept all settings, customizations  and views, I was impressed.

I still always make a library backup first though...

Also you can install 18 and 19 side by side so if 19 is breaking things you can always uninstall and go back to 18...

If you do have issues, I would let everyone know in this thread so such problems can be fixed...

I always install the new version alongside the previous one for a while in case of unstability in the new version. The problem with the last update was that when MC 18 imported the MC 17 library it immediately and without asking proceeded with automatic tasks on it, which in my case messed it up a little. In MC 17 I had all auto tasks switched off, but somehow that setting wasn't ported to MC 18. Which had me wasting an hour or two resolving the situation. Just wanted to know ahead of time if the same is going to happen this time, so I can be prepared for it. If MC 19 imports the auto-task settings from MC 18 first and then the library, it shouldn't be an issue.

An important thing to be aware of for users running MC 18 and MC 19 alongside each other is that you have to maintain two separate libraries.

Maybe this is the best thread for this:

No replay gain tag information transferred to MC19 from MC18.  It has to analyze my entire library all over again.  The wait on this is painful.  Maybe it can be fixed.
Title: Re: Upgrade Problems and Questions
Post by: audunth on August 15, 2013, 09:43:05 am
I assume that's because MC 19 uses a different method of analyzing the audio, and the new method isn't compatible with the data from the old method. More info here: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=82025.0

I don't think that's something that will be fixed, other than maybe making it the analysis process faster/more effective or something.

I am getting the same error as Pinky on one machine in my network.  The error reads:  error connecting to server.

Activation code loaded fine on all the other machines on the home network so its not a firewall issue.

Advice?

Hi,

Just bought MC19.  My problem: Wasapi (with Cirrus Logic CS4206B) isn't working anymore (mac mini 2012-bootcamp-windows 7).  MC18 worked flawless with Wasapi...

Any hint?

Can I assume MC18 can connect to a MC19 server? ... eg, MC18(Mac)=>MC19 ...

You need to select Volume Level (replay gain) to display RG tags. You only need to re-analyse your files  if you want the new R128 volume levelling & dynamic range (I think)

PvdImport? I'm guessing this is no longer going to be supported in 19? I have up and working with 18 just fine. Regedited in 19 exactly as it is in 18 and get a message saying, "Interface plug-in 'PvdImport' could not be found or created."
I love this Plugin and hope you will address the issue at hand.
Title: Re: Upgrade Problems and Questions

Forget The Last Post about PvdImport. I completely uninstalled it, and removed all references to it in the registry, reinstalled it, added the key, string values and DWORD values. It's working fine now. If anyone else has this same problem, do the above. Should work perfectly.

If you don't know how to change your settings here's how. But don't mess with anything else in there.

Run "Regedit"
Open "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE"
On Windows 7-64bit, you need to Open "Wow6432"
Open JRiver
You may have old Media Center Programs listed. Mine are Media Centers 13 thru 19.
When I installed PvdImport, its default installation went to 15.

On the Attached .jpg you notice two "REG_DWORD" named "IVersion" and "PluginMode". If you have 0x00000000 (0) you'll need to change/edit the last Zero (0) to a (1). That's it. PvdImport will now be ready to run on 19. I would recommend a reboot.

If you haven't messed around in your systems Registry before, Don't do it. Have somebody who knows what they're doing do it for you. If you mess anything up in there, It's not going to be my fault. I warned you.

Title: Portable MC19 install cannot be registered?
Post by: Peter-T on August 19, 2013, 02:19:53 pm
I upgraded from MC18 to MC19 on my W8 PC without problems and registered it (cost 1 restore).
On the W8 PC I installed MC19 on an USB stick via custom portable install and registered it (cost 1 restore).
I used this USB-stick to start MC19 on another PC that runs Windows server 2012. It will run without problems, but it was no longer registered.
I tried several ways to get it registered. Filling in the reg-key leads to a windows that says that registration went OK, but after restart MC19 reports (Help/Reg.Info) that it is NOT registered.
I also used the .mjr file (double click on it). That started MC19, but it still was not registered.
All in all I tried it 3 times and every time I got an email with a new .mjr file and the message that I used 1 restore.
My total restore count is now down to 5. If everything worked as it should, I still should have 8 restores left!

How can I properly register the portable MC19 installation on my USB stick, used on my Server2012 PC?
Can you reset the number of restores to 8?

You can use the Install Key to register a second PC and not use a restore next time.  Read the wiki topic called "Restoring a License".

Do the portable install from a PC that is already licensed.  Nothing further is required.

Just upgraded to MC 19.0.029 and everything went smoothly..

After testing all formats..
1. On all DSD format the spectrum analyser will not show up but will show up only on other files types... no big deal just wondering why...

2. Notice the .dts file cannot be play ... window pop up saying "something is wrong with the playback"

my DAC is currently Teac UD 501 and setup as follow in Option / Audio
Audio dev = TEAC ASIO USB DRIVER [ASIO]
Device setting = no change as default
DSP & Output format/ output encoding = none
 Bitstreaming = yes [DoP]..

Had tried, checking the DTS and DTS-HD in the bitstreaming...same... still don't play  these dts files....
anything that I missed out???

You can use the Install Key to register a second PC and not use a restore next time.  Read the wiki topic called "Restoring a License".

Do the portable install from a PC that is already licensed.  Nothing further is required.

I did do the portable install from a PC (PC1) that was already licensed for MC19 and that went OK. I did have to license the USB-stick-install separately though. This portable install worked fine on PC1 (W8) and even on PC1 under windows server 2012 (from the 2d partition). It remained licensed. Also no problem when I used this portable install on PC2 (W7) : it kept its license.

PC3 running windows server 2012 gave problems : the MC19 portable install lost its license. Whatever I tried to do, it would NOT get a license. Using the reg-key produced the message that the licensing went OK, but after starting MC19 it was NOT licensed. The install key (.mjr) did NOT work either : double clicking on it would startup MC19 without having installed a license.
So I decided finally to do a normal install of MC19 on PC3. That went OK, but I could ONLY license that one with the reg-key and NOT with the .mjr install key.

All these futile licensing trials on PC3 have cost me 3 restore counts. Can I get these back, please?

You don't need to use restores within the first 14 days after doing one.  Use the Install Key.

If you run out, let us know.  We don't reset them otherwise.

What OS?  Is it connected to the Internet?

Is it an old machine?

"Security" software can sometimes be a problem.

Maybe you could reinstall their drivers?

However, ASIO is the best choice for Lynx hardware.

The license server is working.  It's possible there is a firewall problem on your machine, but make sure you have the correct version of MC installed.  It must match the license.  More here:

Hi
I purchased V19 license yonks ago and just upgraded MC today. MC19 was running fine during the day but MC18 opened up in parallel when I selected a JPG file. This triggered me to uninstall MC18. The minor issue is that the uninstall reset my license on MC19 and required use of one of my activations. A bit disappointing, though a minor issue, as I trust I would be allowed a 13th activation in 12 months if need be. The previous MC upgrade did the same thing

Regarding the association, MC18 was default for jpg, but MC19 was not (I did deselect images/pictures during install so it does make sense), so this is probably OK.

Great product. Thanks

I have had trouble getting the remote control to work seemlessly on my Media Centre, so it remains on MS MC. Time is too short to sort it out. We use MC18 for better audio output for music. Maybe MC19 will just work for me when I upgrade the media centre..touch wood.

I recently did a full reinstallation of Windows 7, which started me with an essentially clean slate but did create a directory called something like "Windows Old".  In there are my old Program Files including a J River 18 folder but I cannot run any of the programs in this folder.  After the reinstallation of Windows, I installed J River 19 but have none of my old settings.  I would really like to transfer the parametric EQ settings I was using in J River 18 over to J River 19- does anybody know if there is a particular file in the J River 18 folder that I could copy over would do that?  Or, is there another way this could be accomplished that does not involve running J River 18?

I just installed v19 on one of my pc's downstairs and used the key generated 7/21, I kept the transaction notes.   I then got an email saying I 'restored' and had 9 left for the year.    How is this 'restoring'?  This was just an initial install and license of v19.

I'd like to confirm what this "9 left" means exactly.  I wont be asked for more money if the number runs down, will I?  If so, I'd like to now how a new install is a 'restore', resulting in the number decrementing.

I like v19 so far, no bugs to report.

I can't get v18 to unistall, via windows or directly invoking the EXE in the app's directory.  I presume it must go?

thx!

Install the latest MC18 and MC19.  Then uninstalling MC18 should work.

If you run out of restores, we can reset them.

I have just upgraded to 19.

I usually use Wasapi I use bitstreaming but I have tried both Wasapi options and get no sound.

If I use Default Audio Direct Sound it works.

Please advise..
You could start a thread for this.  It's probably just a setup problem.  Try the wiki on bitstreaming setup.  Make sure nothing else has "exclusive" use of WASAPI.

Hi -- I did a fresh import of my library when I upgraded from 18 to 19. I made a number of changes to the files, so I thought re-importing made more sense. Everything went smoothly except for one hiccup --- MC rejected 52 (out of about 15000) files because the names were too long. Those names are easy enough to shorten -- if I knew which ones they were. Poring over the 15000 to find them sounds like no fun. If there is a Windows utility that ranks the files by name size, that sounds like it would do the trick. Or are some tricks in MC to help? Thanks.

BTW, I've been using MC for a  couple of months now, and want to tip my hat to the folks at JRiver. This is an awesome program.  :D I don't think you can fully appreciate it unless you've struggled with iTunes. The import function that took a couple of minutes in MC basically took forever in itunes. I'm only starting to understand how elegant and powerful its features are. Thanks for you patience with newbies like me -- David

I own MC 18 and purchased MC 19. I think I may have gone to the wrong site to download the new MC 19 version. It does not recognize my new code. I went to the download page for MC19. What must I do now to get MC 19 installed properly. The new MC 19 is telling me I have 30 days to try out MC 19. Please help.

I am a happy owner of MC17 and wish to upgrade to MC19.  I thought I was purchasing the upgrade when clicking on the link for the latest build, but ended up with a free trial version.
So now I have both MC17 and the trial version of MC19.
What is the easiest way to end up with just the purchased version of MC19?
Should I just go ahead and purchase the MC19 upgrade and will I then be able to install it?
Do I have to then uninstall MC 17 after MC 19 is installed?
I noticed my playlists are not accessible on the trial version on MC 19.  Is this because it is a trial version?
Apologies if these questions are already answered somewhere, but I looked around first before posting.

Thx, I did read that page before ordering.  I elected to download the latest build and ended up with the trial version. In hindsight this is probably for the best, as I will spend some time with the trial version to make sure it is what I want.  I am a little concerned because the trial version did not recognize my playlists and a few of the tags on some tracks.

Try a trial version of Directory Opus.  You can go into Flat View and add the column Path Length and sort by it.

Still not valid.
I got two computers, one HTPC and one in my home-office.
I rebuild my HTPC , different Hardware, installed Win 8 on SSD, so first I installed MC 17 again and restored it with my key, accepted no problems.
Than i would like to try MC 19, I bought a key July 30 , used the latest mail with key you send me downloaded MC 19 from your website and installed it  when I enter my Registration code ( the Permanent code) it says not valid for this version of MC. I think the problem is the key is not valid for MC 19 only for MC 17. So I want to upgrade to MC 19, but that regristation code is not working on MC 19, that's what MC 19 says.

You have an MC17 license and an MC19 license.  You must use the license that corresponds to the version of the software.

just upgraded from 18 to 19, just wanted to point out an issue that perhaps isn't a huge deal but could be confusing?

note the screenshot, i have installed to D:\Program Files\

however, when Start Menu shortcuts are created, it is defaulting to C:\Program Files (x86)

? - I have changed the default path in Windows registry for my own convenience when installing progs, for some reason MC is choosing to install to Program Files rather than Program Files (x86) as other applications default to (but just to confirm, is Media Center 19 is 64bit?). I have manually updated the shortcuts, but this should not cause any other issues right?

thx a bunch!

While this does need to be fixed (the shortcuts should follow where you have installed it) 32-bit applications should be installed to the Program Files (x86) directory.

I upgraded to 19 a couple of months ago.  I am still running XP but when I have time to load 7 I will.  Granted that my PC is in need of being upgraded.  It has not been high on my priority list as I have not had any problems with it.  As they say, if it works don't fix it.  All my audio and video files are located in a Linux server.

Problems that I have noticed when importing all the files and not converting my library.  (I do this each time I upgrade.)  I have about 60,000 audio files and 7,000 video files.

1.  Importing was very slow.  It took several days to import the audio files.  (I import by genre)  I don't know if there is something running in the background in MC 19 if so how do I turn it off?

2.  In the pane window for artist - All the artists are not listed.  Only about half.  What can I do to correct this.  I haven't checked the other panes yet as you can imagine it is very time consuming.

3.  I had to attach about 40% of the cover art manually.  This took several weeks to accomplish working at it when I had some time.

4.  While it imported the files there was a notice that some files could not be imported.  I could not find a listing of those files so I could investigate if I had some problems unrelated to MC19.  I would like to know if there is a method to produce a printable list of my audio files that were not imported.

5.  Importing video was worse than the audio.  It took over a week.

6.  I have had to Look up every movie again and download cover art and description.  One problem I have, is that I have spent a significant amount of time setting up movie genre and series information.  When I down load movie info it changes it to a list for genre and changes the series info.  How can I prevent these two or other specific fields from being changed?

If I can get these issues resolved it would be helpful.

Thanks

I upgraded to MC 19 from MC 18 on my W7 PC  and no problems occurred. However in the slide show of the theatre mode I noticed that no slides are available for a lot of my music files.
In MC 18 there always were some pictures (sometimes  not closely related to music) during playing all the files.
In standard mode if I click on “images” on the upper bar, suddenly a lot of pictures appear related to the music.
I like the slide show when I listen to my music on theatre mode.
Any suggestions?

Hi, first thanks for a fantastic program, I started on MC18 and have been very happy with it and purchased the MC19 pre-order upgrade but have been waiting for it to go stable before I install.

One question - I really love the Audio - "Recent Albums" search function that you have because I easily can go to new albums that I have added.  If I upgrade to MC19 will everything be re-imported and then will the recent albums then not be up to date?

Or if it does re-import is there any way that you can sort to determine when albums were added in chronological order?

Thanks

Title: Periods at start or end of directory or file name
Post by: brookb on October 04, 2013, 11:02:41 pm
I installed MC19.032.  I decided to update some songs on my Android phone.  I have MC set up to create stacked .mp3 files for copying to Android.  It is set up to create the stacked handheld files in a directory called "media/Audio Conversion Cache", and it creates them with an Artist/Album directory structure.  It can successfully sync the files to the device, but there's a problem if you want to delete the stacked conversion cache files.

The problem seems to be that some Albums have multiple periods at the start or end of their names.  For example: Joe Walsh/But Seriously Folks...   In MC's standard library, MC is smart enough to not put these periods into the directory name.  But in the Audio Conversion Cache, it creates the directory with the "..." in it.  After it does that, there is no easy way to delete the directory.  MC can't do it.  Windows can't do it.  The only way I figured to do it was from DOS, and that depends upon your system having Window's "Short" file names enabled.  These are the old legacy 8.3 filenames.  Here are the steps if anyone else runs into this:

Open a DOS prompt
'cd' into the directory that has a subdirectory or filename that starts or ends in periods.
Type 'dir /x'  This will show you the short file & directory names in addition to the long ones.
Delete offending directories with the following command:  rmdir /s SHORTFILENAME    For example rmdir /s butser~1

I updated to MC19.50, and the problem still exists.

Please fix MC to leave the periods out of the directory structure in the conversion cache directories.

Then I started MC19 and restored the old MC18 library into it.

This worked perfectly. No importing of the audio files necessary. It seems so easy.

I upgraded today from 18 to the latest v19. Figured I would uninstall V18 (both are listed as installed programs). But I keep getting a Windows host error (rundll) when I try to uninstall 18 (19 is not running at the time). Asks me to close the program for find a solution via MS, but the latter doesn't seem to work. Uninstall is working for other programs (I tried a few I no longer use to make sure). I also rebooted my system, still getting the problem no matter if I try using the control panel uninstall or the built in uninstall app). Any ideas?

Please help! Crash on install.  :-[

I had a massive crash while I was backing up my data with Seagate Dashboard to external hardrive - new drive that I hadn't used before.  Basically it crashed my jriver 19.54, seagate dashboard, and computer.  My biggest concern was jriver!  Anyway after crash and reboot, jriver won't open, and seagate won't open.  They just kept crashing continually.  I also still had MC18 installed and i tried to open that and that crashed too.

I did full uninstall of both and reinstalls/reboots etc, seagate works, however jriver keeps crashing on install.  Can't get past no matter what i do. I previously had MC18 installed and I've tried reinstalls of both but it just won't work.

However, here's the strange part, I run my computer with two user accounts, one Admin, and one standard account.  The issue is only in the standard account.  In the admin account i have been able to reinstall jriver 19 and it works fine.  This is driving me nuts.  I've changed the standard account to an admin account but that hasn't helped.

So after a massive uninstall and clean  out, and a reinstall in the original admin account i thought it would all work.

But when I switch back the the standard account, it MC19 won't load.  JRiver tries and then nothing happens.  Then when I try and reinstall in the standard account it keeps crashing.  I've tried disabling virus, malware etc and i don't know what to do.  It seems to be clashing with something but I can't work it out.

Please help.  Thanks for any ideas!

EDIT:  I can now get MC18 and MC19 to install in the standard account however, they still won't load.  Just crash without even a message.  A crach dump file is generated each time and I've attached it although i don't know how to read it.  Thanks

2nd EDIT:  I was about to attach the crash dump files when i saw the CACHE folder, i looked in there and noted that one of the 'sort character table.dat' files was 0kb, and the others were 128kb, and incidentally the zero one was about the time the computer crashed.  So i thought what the hell i'll delete it, and it worked!  Everything is working now!!

Been sitting here since 7pm and now 12:30am.... off to bed for work tomorrow.  Hope this helps someone one day....

Anyone know what happened?

Cheers

Nice detective work.

If the sort table is corrupt, it might cause sorting to stick in an infinite loop (since all characters will compare as equal).

We'll defend against this in a future build.

Hello JRiver Support and Users.

Sorry if this wasn't the right thread to place this.  I will place this in a new thread if need be....

I'm having a very difficult time trying to install JRiver MC 19 on my PC.  I've been using MC18 since April, and purchased the MC19 upgrade in July.  Today was the first time I've tried installing MC 19, and so far I've been unsuccessful.  I tried executing MediaCenter190060.exe, which led to an MC19 Task Window telling me that it was updating from a previous JRiver version.  From that point on, the task window becomes "unresponsive", but I can see that the program is accessing my audio/video library database on my Synology NAS.  The program is reading files from my NAS at around 30-60 mbps, but even after 15-20 minutes of this constant reading, the task window is unresponsive.  I just end up shutting down the MC19 update process to get back to my normal WinXP environment.  My MC18 library is composed of around 200-300 Gbytes of audio/video files, but I haven't read anything on this forum about how long it takes to upgrade to MC19 from MC18.  I've disabled my AVG(antivirus) processes before running the MC19 update.  I can't think of anything else to do right now to resolve this problem.  I'm hoping I don't have to remove my current MC18 library to successfully run the MC19 upgrade process.

Please help!

Thanks,
DanF

Let it run.  A lot of video on a NAS would be slow.

Okay, Jim.  That's just what I'm doing right now.  It has been almost an hour that I ran the MC 19 update software, and the task window still says, "updating from a previous version....".  I didn't realize it would take this long to do an update.  What is the update program doing to my MC 18 library?  I don't recall it taking this long to even create my library in MC18???

Let it run.  If it is analyzing video and you have a lot of video on a NAS drive, it could take a long time.

It doesn't touch your MC18 library.  It gets a copy and converts it.

Bad news!!  After nearly an hour of running the update program, I got a popup window telling me I am low on local disk space.... :( ....followed by an MC19 update window saying, "Install wizard could not copy the necessary files to the destination folder". "Please ensure that the file "C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center 19\JR Tools.dll is not in use".

How much local disk memory do I need to update to MC 19?  99% of my audio /video library is on my NAS.  I only had about 10 Gig of free local disk space on my laptop before starting the MC19 update process.  Does the update require more than 10 gig to install?

The install of MC should only use about 100MB.

Download MC19 manually and run it.  It should only take a few minutes, even on a slow computer.

If the problem persists, try running the install with the /NoUpgrade switch to prevent it from auto-migrating MC18 settings to MC19.

Ok, Matt.  I'll give that a try.  How do I get back all the local hard drive space I just lost from the stopped/unfinished MC19 update process?  I had over 10 gig before running, now I have only 125 MB free.  I need to get back that hard drive space....??

Post by: DanF on October 25, 2013, 11:34:05 am
Alright guys, I'm trying to get back all my lost hard drive space I had before running the mc19 update sw.  I noticed a directory path, "C:\Documents and Settings\..\Application Data\J River\Media Center 19", which is over 25 Gigabytes in size.  Holy Cow!!!   The "Media Center 18" Directory in the same tree path above is only 318 Mbytes in size.  What gives?  Should I delete the whole "Media Center 19" directory?

This is getting really strange.....it looks like the MC 19 update sw is trying to create a "local" library of my whole audio/video library on my NAS.  That's not going to work for me....I don't have that much local hard drive space to create a copy of my NAS audio/video library.

?
Title: Re: Upgrade Problems and Questions
Post by: DanF on October 25, 2013, 12:20:05 pm
Well, I deleted the whole "JRiver Media Center" directory structure I described above.  I gained back 25 Gig of hard drive space. It looks like MC19 update would have eventually tried to create a whole "local" library of my NAS Library if I had enough local hard disk space to do it, which no way on earth will I ever have that amount...it was making local copies (on my laptop) of my flac files/directory structure that are stored on my NAS....WTH??

Matt, what do you mean by "manually" running the MC19?  I thought that's what I did?  I'm running a local copy of "MediaCenter190060.exe" on my laptop.

I just don't understand why MC19 has to create a local library (or even a temp copy of it) from my 300 Gig library on my NAS?  That's not a viable/proper installation for me....

Help guys...

Hi.
I have looked for the answer here but haven't found it. If it exists, my apologies for my poor search skills. I have a question about upgrading and restores.

If I upgrade to v19 from 18 are my allowed restores reset to their maximum number? Because of computer rebuilds and purchases and some installation wonkiness I am low on v18 restores and probably won't have enough to complete v19 installs on all my computers unless the number allowed is reset after purchasing the upgrade.

Thanks.

You can extend your restores by using the 30 day trial period and by using the Install Key during the first 14 days.

Support,

Should I create a new thread with my above stated MC19 upgrade problems?  I still don't have any resolution.  I don't know why MC19 upgrade is trying to create a whole local library of my MC18 NAS audio/video library.  It is copying all my flac/audio files from my NAS onto my local (laptop) drive, and chewing up the remaining few gigs of local storage I have.  Why does it copy all my audio files from my NAS and try to put them in a "library" directory on my local drive? ( C:\Documents and Settings\..\Application Data\J River\Media Center 19\library").  I don't have the space to create a local library.  I want my libraries to remain on the NAS.

I really would like to get this resolved.

Thanks,
Dan

I am having a strange problem. I have Windows 8.1. I installed Media Center 17 with no problems. I then wanted to upgrade to Media Center 19. When I run the installer and the files extract, the next dialog box freaks out and has graphic glitches to the point where I can't read or see anything within the box itself. Then, when I go to Task Manager it says the program is not responding. I've tried compatibility mode and disable display scaling, but nothing works. I also tried installing in safe mode. The install went fine, but when I went back to non-safe mode I tried opening the program and got the message that Media Center 19 was installed for a different operating system and to re-install. I'm not sure how to fix this.

There is a problem with the cut/paste tags feature on 19/60 and it's been happening for a number of versions.  I'm talking about the Ctrl/shift/V feature to transpose meta from the redbook layer to files from the same album with higher res. content.  When you update tags from library then go back to Windows to see the files, there are random extra files added to the folder which were not there beforehand.  It seems that files are being copied across in addition to just the meta.  Something strange is going on.  See image here where tracks 4, 10 and 12 (randomly) are accompanied by their red-book counterparts:

These were not there prior to the tag-pasting and updating.

Also, the cover art which was imported from folder.jpg to the redbook versions should be the same in each file, but for some reason its showing as different.

Are you using Windows or Mac?  What is the version number.

Please try another CD.  You could read about ripping on our wiki.

I'll split this to a new thread.

Recently upgraded from MC18 to 19 I have Windows 7 64 bit.  MC 18 still shows in my programs and when I click on the MC icon MC 18 opens up. I have to go to windows program and select MC19 in order to use MC19.

Should I delete MC18 and download MC19 again? MC19 and MC18 function with no problems.

You could uninstall MC18.

Or you could put a shortcut on the desktop for MC19 and delete the MC18 shortcut.

Check file associations in both versions.

Try running the installer with the switch /NoUpgrade.  You can do this by creating a shortcut on the desktop and editing it.  Or from the command line if you're so inclined.

Hello! I hope that this is the right place to put in some questions for help. I have a problem with playing FLACs with MC 19. I'm using MC 17 on Win 8.0 and did an upgrade with MC 19. Both versions are still installed in parallel. MC 17 still plays perfect.

When i play my FLACs with MC 19 i often have some strange and ugly noise and scratches while listening. This happens unpredictable with the same file on different positions or sometimes not. I realy can't use MC 19. It's impossible to use it for playing music. I'm very sad about that. The good thing is that MC 17 is still running perfect with alle the FLACs. The FLACs are OK, never had any problems!! But I have bought MC 19 and I want to use it.

Can anyone give me some advice or help me. (you can also answer in German)
Thank' a lot ...

I'll move this to a new thread.  Set up your audio again.  Try Direct Sound first.  If that works, continue, and post in the new thread what you find.

WASAPI terminology changed.  It defaults to Event Style now and some devices don't handle it well.  You can check the option called "Disable Event Style".

Buffer size may also be a factor.  Smaller may be better.

Look to see how you have MC17 audio set.

I've tried several times this morning to purchase an M19 upgrade license, but can never get past the billing information page. All the information I enter is correct, credit card is valid, etc., but I continue to get the following error message:

"There is a problem with your information. Please check and try again.
Important: Your e-mail and password will be needed to restore, so please enter a valid e-mail address and a password you can remember."

I've tried two different credit cards, several different passwords of various lengths, with or without uppercase, lowercase, numbers, symbols, etc. Nothing works. Is there a number I can call for technical support?

Thanks,

Hi

originally posted as a separate topic - now removed, sorry first post :)

I upgraded MC19 on the weekend.  It was crashing every time i start to play a file.  Have seen the bug fixes around crashes when playing 2 linked zones

Quote
19.0.68 (11/1/2013)

1. Fixed: Starting playback in linked zones could crash in rare cases when using WASAPI.

I have now upgraded to 19.0.74 and the files play in a single zone, but stop (but don't crash) playback when linking 2 zones.

I only use JRiver for Audio, and have 2 zones configured, with 2x USB DACs.

Logs attached

Any Ideas

Many thanks
Jon

I have a couple of questions and a problem if you can help me it would be appreciated, thank you.

1/ I brought Media centre 18 on the 7/14/2013, then brought the early update for media centre 19 then brought the new version of Media 19 (currently running 19.082) Have i got some credits now as reading on here I should have been able to upgrade 18-19 for free instead its cost be alot more?

2/ The reason I wanted to upgrade was because when I ask the library to update iteself the program crashed. Thinking the new version 19 would be the quick cure I brout and installed it but I'm still getting crashes. The only way I get my files upgreded is by stopping and starting the program itself as its set to update automatically.

PC is running XPpro Sp3, 2GB of RAM, Pentium 4 running at 3 GhZ.

Greetings,

I have searched for the answer but have been unable to find it thus far, hence this post.

I purchased JRiver during the latter half of July and can run MC18 no problem.  Tonight I downloaded MC 19.0.067 and I can see the music and video libraries, music plays no problem but when I try and play a movie a message is displayed that the system is searching for additional components.  After sometime an error is shown saying that the program was unable to download LAV Splitter filter.

I have a strong wifi connection and used it to download the upgrade so I do not think that would an issue and permissions wise I do not think it should be an issue, is there any other areas I can check.

When installing MC19 I did select all formats instead of the default.

Love the product and hence why I wanted the upgrade, look forward to any advice.  BTW this is on a dedicated HTPC used strictly for JRiver.

Cheers
Mark

Not sure what I should do at this stage.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

Not sure what I should do at this stage.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

It is possible that it is a file permissions issue with the directory MC uses to download LAV and MadVR.  I'm not sure where this is, though I'd guess in the AppData directory.

I'd try:

1. Make a backup of your MC19 Library (this will contain the entire database and settings for MC).
2. Uninstall MC completely.
3. REBOOT.  Don't skip this because you are lazy.
4. Navigate to this folder in Windows Explorer: C:\Users\<YOUR_USERNAME>\AppData\Roaming\J River
5. Move the Media Center 19 folder somewhere else (like to your Desktop).  Just make sure it is completely gone from that directory.
6. Reinstall MC using the current build from the "sticky post" at the top of this forum.
7. Restore the backup you made in step 1.
8. Make sure your computer is online and try to play a video.

If that works, and you're sure nothing is missing, you can delete the Media Center 19 folder you moved to your Desktop (or wherever).

Thanks I will give that a go.  Do I need to do anything with MC18 as that is still on and working as normal. Or do I just need to do as you have indicated and see.

Thanks in advance.

Rebooting might help.

Try installing 18.0.212 (See Old Versions on the Wiki).  Run it, then uninstall it.

Hey all,

Have you guys got a set of instructions that relate to upgrading MC from one machine to a new PC?

Currently, my mother uses MC18 on a very old PC running Win XP. I have set up a new machine running Windows 8.1 and installed a fresh copy of MC19. The machines, at this point in time are in physically different locations, but I hope to ship the new PC to her tomorrow. I know I'm going to have to remote in to the units and try to copy the music across, but of course, we have setup specific views and tags for her so I need to get all the setting form the old machine onto the new one. What is the best strategy to achieve this?

Of course, at the moment, MC19 wants to auto import as I start it, so ofr the time being I just cancel this.

Cheers

Chris

If the machines and the media are configured similarly, you might be able to make a backup from MC on one and restore it on the other.  Depending on the backup version, you may also be able to restore your settings at the same time.

The wiki has a topic called "Moving Files" that may help.

Thanks Jim. I'll check it out on my own system.

BTW - also with regard to upgrades, last night I purchased MC19 on my own system and upgraded. Whilst the server went without a hitch, the clients (that are generally connected to the server on start-up, but also have their own local libraries) failed to upgrade properly. I had to uninstall MC19, open MC18, attach to the local library, then re-install MC19. Its a shame that the server connections aren't also pulled across during and upgrade.

Tried to install MC19.0.91 but JRTools.dll file says to be busy and can not be used.

After tride to update I can not now uninstall MC19.0.67 either or

use the MC19.0.67 now either, and the same reason. JRTools is busy.

Restarted the computer but same problems.

What to do ?

I don't know the answer, but an antivirus program might cause something like this.  Try uninstalling it.

I'm currently running 19.0.67     Several messages on the forum board suggest current version is at least 19.0.91 - but help/upgrade tells me 67 is current version.   Please advise

Perhaps if someone manually initiates an update check, which would typically be if they are having problems in the current build and have been directed to update by someone on the forum, Media Center should automatically pull the Latest version even if they are currently on the Stable branch.

This seems to have been a source of confusion for a number of people recently.

Hi,
I previously ran MC17 but recently lost this due to a an issue with my laptop which required the hard drive to be wiped and Windows re-installed.
I have tried to recover my license registration code on the Restore Page but it does not recognise my email address, despite my still receiving JRiver  emails at that address and it being the one I used to register.

However, my question is this:  it would make sense to take the opportunity to upgrade to MC19, but I understand that without MC17 installed I will have to pay a full software purchase fee rather than the usual upgrade fee. Going thru the process of (somehow) recovering MC17 to only then upgrade to MC seems rather time consuming.

Can you please advise?

Rgds

Title: Trying to upgrade from MC15
Post by: randycw on January 25, 2014, 11:52:04 pm
It is indeed time for me to update MC, but I am having trouble.  When I have MC15 check for updates, it finds MC17 for $27.  I download it, install it, and click purchase.  It launches a page for MC18 and I get caught in a loop of being unable to purchase.

I, then, tried just going to MC19 and was going to buy it outright (rather than upgrade), but the fresh install loses all of my smart playlists and zone settings.  Thus far I am stuck with MC15 until I can sort out the upgrade path.

Three things,
1) MC19:  I take it you have this installed already (in trial mode).
2) Upgrade Licence: As per the OP in this thread go to this page - http://jriver.com/purchase_19_as_upgrade.html to get an MC19 Licence for the upgrade price.  You will then get the Licence File and when you run it MC19 will then no longer be in Trial Mode.
3) Migrating from MC15--> MC19.  Now this part I don't know about as I can not remember at what point the Settings Migration was introduced.  I'm sure others can help on this bit!

Download and install MC19.  Using it, restore your MC15 license.

Settings won't transfer, but you could leave MC15 installed and open the settings so you can see what you did and enter it in MC19.

I think that settings from MC17 and above are transferred.

Bummer.  Looks like I'm in for a bit a tedium over the next few days.
Thank you for the responses.

I think I'll work on the computer upgrade first and then work toward the MC upgrades.

Any obvious solutions to this frustrating problem:
when I try to upgrade from 17 to 19 the button to confirm the upgrade and authorise payment only results in the screen reverting to the upgrade details page (where credit card and address details are inserted), repeatedly requiring me to re-insert my email address.

I am now using a different email address and physical address from when I bought MC17....is this likely to be causing the problem?

Sorry for the problem.  What version of MC19 do you have installed?

Are you purchasing from the Help menu in the program?

Sometimes "security" software can cause problems.  Antivirus, firewall, pop-up blocker...

Thanks for your speedy reply.

I have reverted to MC17 as the 19 trial expired.
I tried to download the MC19 trial again but this appears not possible and I only receive a request to purchase.

I have therefore attempted again to upgrade to MC19 but I just end up in an endless loop of requests to complete the required details (which I duly do)....only to receive repeated requests for the same info (email address etc ) over and over.

This is getting very frustrating!
Is there an alternative way around this problem?  Thanks

Sorry for the problem.  So you have MC 19 installed and when you start it up you see the window that says "The trial period has expired." and you click the "Purchase" button. Then it doesn't accept your email address, is that right?  I tested using your hotmail.co.uk address and it seemed to work Ok, is that the one you're using?

Upgraded from 17 to 19 and cannot get it to recognize/import my 17 Library. It found all my media, but I don't want that without my Library. Did backup of 17 Library but when I navigate to it from 19's Restore Library, it won't let me select and import that backup!

Why won't 19 just find my existing 17 Library and import it? How do I get it imported?

Thanks!

MC19 can restore an MC17 or MC18 backup.  I don't think you will get settings restored from anything older than an MC18 backup.

So you said two things - it will and it won't pull MC17 library. Or I'm not understanding.

Should I step back to MC18 in order to import my MC17 library? Can I get MC18?

Gotta do something - MC17 stopped playing anything...

Yes, that seems to work.  Install MC18, import your MC17 library.  Backup the MC18 library. Then, in MC19, import that MC18 backup.

Now it works but I am getting the following message:
We could not find an upgrade available for the registration code you entered.
I thought that upgrade to 19 from earlier versions at a discount price was possible.

Install 19.0.149 from the top of this board, then make sure you have installed your MC17 license on that machine.  If so, you will get an upgrade price.  If you don't see the upgrade price, don't proceed.

Hey, long time no post. But still using MC and still loving it.
I thought it was about time I gave you guys some more money so I'm upgrading to MC19.

I put it on one machine and, sure enough, it converted my main library such that the other machines in the house won't read it anymore.
SO I have to put it on the rest of the computers in the house.
But I don't want to have to remember and reconfigure all my settings and tool bars and stuff - it took me years to settle on what I have now.

Is there a way of exporting settings, toolbar items, locations, custom library fields and the like.
Also any other advice about uninstalling MC17 first or not, or anything of that nature much appreciated!

Cheers
Mark
