Title: No sound when attempting to upsample to DSD
Post by: DBB on August 01, 2015, 12:24:55 pm
Sorry if this was covered before. I just got the Gustard x12, a DSD capable DAC. I followed instructions to upsample to DSD, (selected an ASIO driver, selected DSD via DoP output format in Options, but no sound comes out. My computer is a few years old. Does this mean it has insuficient power for DSD?

Can you play sound at all?  Try the Audio Setup topic on our wiki.

Try some other formats.  What works?

Is the ASIO driver from the manufacturer?

Yes. All PCM modes work in both ASIO and wasapi. The driver is the ASIO provided by Gustard for their xmos usb to SPDIF device, the u12. It is xmos usb audio 2.0st 3033 [asio].

Pick one of the native format flavors of DSD from DSP Studio > Output Format.

DoP will probably play as low volume noise on your ASIO device.

I got the DoP DSD to work by changing the properties on the driver output to 24/192 and increasing the buffer. The native mode DSD gives me an error message that the device might not play DSD. Maybe the DAC only plays DoP is that likely?

I found some info in a Russian forum that says it should play in native mode. Any suggestions?

That's something the DAC maker should be able to tell you.

We also occasionally see a DAC that won't play what the manufacturer claims it will.  Or it only plays it with a certain type of connection.

Thanks all for the help. I was trying to upsample PCM files to DSD in the native DSD mode, which I now presume doesn't make sense. Of course the native mode is for playing native DSD files. (Da?) After converting a file to dsf, a DSD format, it played fine. So if my understanding is correct, PCM files can only be upsampled to DSD using DoP, correct? If so all modes are working properly on the DAC.

Hi

it's come from the Gustard X12 driver.... with this, you can only play DSD files in Dop mode, not in native.

I use a Tusbaudio driver with mu X12 (same Xmos usb interface) and with this driver, it's ok, all the dsd files (dsd64 et dsd128) are plays in native mode (dsf files, sacd iso, and also the pcm upsampled in dsd files....)

All apologies for my poor english........

I know this thread is old now. But got same problem. The Gustard is an awesome Dac, I got the pro version. Cannot get it work in DSD, it seems they need an adaptive driver, and that the manufacturer not provide, because it is expensive to include.

So if people got this working, would be interested in which driver and setting.
