Title: Does mid-side encoding work?
Post by: mattkhan on February 23, 2018, 06:08:30 pm
I added a mid-side encoding option to DSP studio and played identical content on both L and R channels, the resulting L channel is identical to the input (i.e. what I expect to carry the Mid channel) while the resulting R channel (which I would expect to carry the Side channel) contains the same signal but -6dB lower.

It doesn't seem to match what I understand to be M-S encoding which is

M = (L+R)-6dB
S = (L-R)-6dB

given that L and R were identical, I'd expect the S channel to be completely silent

If I use a 3rd party MS encoder (e.g. http://www.voxengo.com/group/free-vst-plugin-download/#msed) then this behaves exactly as expected.

Is this feature broken?

It is broken and I'm working on a fix.  Thanks for letting us know.

Just to confirm that I concur that the mid-side functions don't work as expected.

ALSO, a brief question – why are there two functions, encode and decode, when this function ought to be fully symmetrical? I.e. the same function, when presented with either L/R or M/S, outputs the other.

würde mich auch interessieren was die Funktion macht und auch was die Funktion "Mittige Enkodierung" macht. Über die "Mittige Enkodierung" von JRiver finde ich überhaupt keine Info im Internet
