Title: Photobucket hosting no longer an option - is there a free alternative?
Post by: CountryBumkin on July 07, 2017, 08:32:43 am
Since Photobucket changed its policy on allowing free users to hotlink photos, all of my prior links are now gone.
I'm looking for an alternative - Dropbox, OneDrive, iCloud, GoogleDrive, Flickr. Not sure what will work for my use and still be a free service.

I'm trying Windows "OneDrive" now. I can upload photos to the Cloud and include a link in my posts, but I don't want a link - I want the photo to be visible in the post without needed to click/open it.

So OneDrive has an "embed" feature. Not sure how to use it yet. I'm testing here (below). Hopefully a photo will show below and not a link.

EDIT: Well it didn't work. I'll keep researching. If anyone has an idea on this, please post. Maybe GoogleDrive or Flickr is the answer.

It's not the avatar/gif that I'm concerned about.

For example, I did a bunch of posts in the Television section (see "USA TV Setup") where I went step-by-step through the setup with photos of each step - where photos were linked to my Photobucket account. Now all the photos are gone. i'm not willing to pay Photobucket $400/yr. Not just on this forum, but also all my photos on the auto and DIY forums I contribute to as well.

So I'm looking for a new place to store photos and "hot link" to them from within these forums.

The Windows OneDrive looked promising, but all I can do so far is put a "link" in the forum and have not found a way to have the photo display like a thumbnail.

Almost got it - I can't figure out a way to link to my avatar.

All of my images from Photobucket still show up in the forum. Maybe if I never sign in to photobucket again they will keep showing up. At least until they go bankrupt next month.

I can't remember seeing this thread before CountryBumkin, so sorry for the late response.

I like to keep control of the images I link to directly, so I know they will be there in future. Most "free" sites like Photobucket (which I used to use), imgur, flickr, etc. can change their policy at any time, and once again your images are lost. Fine for short term image display, but not so good when the images are supporting instructions like yours. Plus who keeps track of where all your image go?

Actually, I prefer these days to have the forum I am supporting host the files, since it is to their benefit. So I use JRiver on this forum.

But it is easy, at least at the moment, to hot link to OneDrive images. Just use the "embed" link above the image, and do not select "Include HTML tags", then post that link inside an image code block: [img][/img]

Example code and image below.
