Title: Korg DS-DAC-100m USB DSD DAC - can't play native DSD in MC
Post by: madbrain on November 17, 2018, 07:22:48 pm
I just bought this DAC for $79.99 on Amazon. It works great with the included Audiogate 4 software using the Korg ASIO driver. It plays the 5.6 MHz DFF stereo files I'm recording with my DA-3000 natively, without PCM conversion.

However, it doesn't seem to play well with MC23. I selected the Korg ASIO driver.

In DSP studio, I set channels to 2, no upmixing or downmixing, output encoding "none" - sample rate "no change".
When I try to play DSD files - stereo 2.8 MHz DSD tracks from an SACD ISO - I get the following error :

"Playback could not be started using the format : 352.8 kWz 64 bit 2 channel.

This format would work : 176.4 kWh 64 bit 2ch.

Would you like to have your DSP studio -> output format settings changed automatically" ?

If I say yes, it does play, but of course MC is converting the DSD files to PCM first. The 176.4 kWh lights up on the device to confirm this.

I also tried to select the "DSD in DoP format (requires DSD capable DAC)" option in DSP studio , but all I got was white noise.

I believe this DAC predates the DoP spec, which means it doesn't support the DoP protocol.

I thought Korg might be using some proprietary method in Audiogate to play DSD on their DAC, but then I tried the Tascam Hi-Res editor and set it up to play my DFF files onto the Korg DAC using the Korg ASIO driver. It played the files natively, as evidenced by the 5.6 Mhz LED lighting up on the device.

Tascam is a different company from Korg, obviously, and they both managed to produce software that plays native DSD fine with the Korg ASIO device. This tells me the playback method isn't proprietary. Is there any chance this could be looked into ?

It seems owners of the equivalent Korg DS-DAC-100 (non m version, which is the mobile/portable model, and also non-DOP) are able to play DSD files on Mac in Media Center 21, also, according to the thread below :

https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=104426.0

That thread does not mention if they are playing the DSD files natively, though.

Is there anything I can do in MC settings to make it play native DSD ? Or is a fix to MC needed to make it play DSD on non-DOP DACs ?

I have attached a log of MC23 (32-bit) trying to play on the Korg device, FYI.

Ignore. This was user error.

I missed the settings for "1xDSD in native format" and "2xDSD in native format". Those actually work fine with this DAC. Maybe I'm getting old and/or need to increase the font size on my monitor.

Hi. I have a chord mojo dac and all plays at the correct sample rate except dsd, dsf. The mojo downsamples to 768khz. Anyone know the exact step by step settings? Please help!

Since that is a different DAC than the one I started this thread about, you are probably better off starting your own thread.

If it's anything like the Korg DAC, do the following :
1) In Tools / Options / Audio device, select the ASIO driver for your DSD DAC
2) In Tools / Options / Output Format / Output encoding, select "2xDSD in native format" . This is what works for me with the Korg DAC.
Your DAC might support 4xDSD . Or it might need one of the options with DSD in DoP format. You need to try it.

You might have to also enable DSD bitstreaming.
