Does it run Windows or Linux?  So far, we only support Linux versions.

Chrome is not running - which is needed for some menu items / features. This should be easy to fix (not running under root, rather some user-name/directory)

Easy for who to fix? Is that something users can fix themselves?

Don't know if firmware / QTS 4.2 is a requirement. Works fine on HS-251+

Go to the link

Double click the JRiver Box, and then drop down the list of supported Qnaps. :)

It's a Linux based OS I believe.  It's just not listed as one of the supported QNAP NAS models.

You would have to ask QNAP.  I don't know.

Not to sound too dumb, but I installed JRiver on my HS-251 (as well as HD station and Chrome) and I cant figure out how to access JRiver from my PC. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks.

Ok so I figured some things out:

1.  For me to install this I had to go to "Control Panel" > "Applications" > "HybridDesk Station" in order to install JRiver.
2.  The unfortunate part here is that I will need to hook up my NAS to my TV via an HDMI cable in order to run JRiver.

<<The unfortunate part here is that I will need to hook up my NAS to my TV via an HDMI cable in order to run JRiver. >>
1. Is that just to set it up??
2. Can you see the JRiver server on your network without the TV after set up??

1.  This is to be able to access the app.  You'll need to have the QNAP server connected to a monitor via HDMI to open the app, which I find quite unfortunate.
2.  Since I can't run it, I can't set up the media network to be able to see it.

I gotta say, it's pretty disappointing to see this great app relegated to the "HD Station" rather than having it run as a regular app.  It's extremely constricting especially for users like me who have their QNAP server on a shelf running headless far away from any possible monitor setup.

I'm in the same position as you. My HS-251 has never been connected to anything except an Ethernet cable, so this great app (I use JRiver on my work PC an really like it) is essentially useless on my QNAP.

I thought the plan was to use the NAS, connected via the HDMI cable, as a (JRiver) Media Center. So that's kind of what I expected. It is unfortunate that it can't be used headless to just  function as a DLNA and/or Library Server.

FWIW - I've been using the HS-251 as a headless DLNA server for a year with Twonky, Minimserver and Logitech Media Server, and I've never connected an HDMI cable. I bought it because it has no fan and is very quiet. Its only JRiver, which is unfortunately a program that I really like, which has this issue.

I was only referring to JRiver's Media Center. Obviously, running it on a NAS, as if the NAS was an HTPC, would require that the NAS be connected to a display; reducing the need for an HTPC to run the JRiver MC software. The unfortunate aspect is that it can't be used headless to just function as a DLNA and/or Library Server.

The issue seems to be that the JRiver staff may not have made the function, features, and requirements of this offering clear enough.

Right, I was hoping to finally rid myself of the dreaded "audio streaming error" on JRemote because I was running MC on my Mac Mini that was indexing the files on the QNAP server and of course there would be issues when the MC Server on my Mac couldn't fetch the particular song on the QNAP.  I'm hoping that MC can be run outside of QNAP HD Station, otherwise this would be a big letdown.

Hello, I think I am facing the same challenge of Joefonebone.

I run a TS-251 and a TS-251+ only for music with different servers under tests (minimserver, asset upnp, etc...) and I run JRiver under a VM Windows 2012. I use JRemote as control point for JRiver.

I was excited to learn that JRiver was implemented on QNAP till i understood that it was under HD Station. My NAS are not connected to the TV through HDMI so today, in my configuration, HD Station is useless.

So the only solutions I found are :
>> to connect my NAS to HDMI in order to configure JRiver
>> find a way to connect through a VNC to HD Station in order to manage the configuration of JRiver ( I found that (http://forum.qnap.com/viewtopic.php?f=320&t=112420#p492163)  but not sure it works on TS-x51....
>> expect a package that is not working under HD Station in headless
>> Continue to use JRiver under VM Win 2012.

If you have any clues you are more than welcome !

BR

A way would be to for the first time (when doing the setup process) connect the NAS to a display. After that there is no need for a display / TV to use JRiver as you can start JRiver via the QRemote app on your smartphone or tablet.

It's available on the iPad too - you just have to disable the checkbox "for ipad only" ... as it's an iPhone version running on the iPad. Though works absolutely perfect!

HD Station is required. It's the environment we were asked to use for development of MC by QNAP.
MC isn't currently autostarting in mediaserver mode but that is doable. We will probably need to produce either an updated package or a second package to switch that on and off.

Will this become available for the HS-210?

Thanks!

Thank you for that info. Should we expect the updated/second package any time soon, or is that a big effort that will take some time?

It shouldn't be a huge deal so I'd expect that it won't be a big wait.

Will the menu items work in the next version too that are using the chrome browser? Currently you get an error saying chrome cannot run under root-user. That would be highly needed as for example it's not possible to buy a license or some other menu-items within MC.

How to extend / buy the QNAP version?

A Media Center 21 Linux or Master license is all that's needed.

Do you need a monitor and mouse and keyboard to set the Linux version up on a QNAP? Will there be a webinterface?

There may never be a headless version, but you can operate it now from a phone or computer.  Take a look at the Remotes page on the wiki.
