Title: Trial licence expires in less than a day!
Post by: branty1970 on July 26, 2021, 04:20:45 pm
Hi,

I've been using Media Center for many years in a Windows environment but am in the process of switching to Linux. As part of my preparations I am trying to make sure that I can make Media Center work in Linux (I'm using Ubuntu 21.04 - Hirsute Hippo). I installed MC28 on my computer earlier today and have managed to get it to rebuild my library with Linux file paths and start playing a couple of movies - all great. BUT, when I closed MC28 and re-opened it, it tells me that the trial licence has expired.

2 questions:
- 1. Is there any way to 'fix' the trial licence?
- 2. Is MC generally a bit flaky on Linux? I don't want to pay for the Linux licence (or a Master Licence) if it isn't going to work very well anyway.

Thanks for any help.

Did you change the hostname of the machine or the MAC address or anything like that? Is the system time correct with correct time zone and everything? That kind of stuff can cause a loss of registration. Also if there's a MAC address randomization feature enabled, that can cause the loss of registration as well.

Hi,

It works perfectly fine on Linux, but you do need a Master or Linux license. The windows license does not work on Linux.

Since the license goes off Mac addresses and presumably some hardware IDs (donīt know exactly). It might be that the trial no longer works for you if you are using the same computer you used MC for Windows on.

Thanks for the advice. I ran the trial on a new machine and it worked fine. If the MAC address has something to do with the trial licence working I suspect it could be because the computer I was trialling it on had previously been used for a trial under Windows? Just a thought.

The Master Licence on Linux works a treat - even if it is a bit of a headache to install.

Just a FYI here, Mac address randomization needs to be always OFF on linux for MC.
