Title: Underworld Evoloution DVD - Adverts...
Post by: Mr ChriZ on March 24, 2008, 05:49:28 pm
I've got the Underworld Evoloution DVD out on hire.
The first half an hour of it is full of adverts.
If I use Windows Media Player I can use the forward buttons
to skip through these adverts.

However the same doesn't appear to work in MC.
 ?

I HATE it when companies do that.
Some of these DVD guys make it nearly impossible to skip the adverts and when I'm already paying good money to rent the film it just makes me REALLY resent them.
If it was a free film it'd be one thing, when I'm paying for it I dont expect a ton of adverts forced down my throat!!

I can confirm this. I've noticed it too on a number of occasions.

I will start a new thread if required but another related issue is that DVD's offering slideshow preso's requiring arrow keys to go forward and back don't work in MC. This causes the MC OSD to appear and does not navigate the DVD menu at all.

What if you do right-click > DVD Menu?

I'm fairly sure DVD Menu didn't work either Matt.
Unfortunately, : not blaming MC... but..
DVD playing on a PC is a nightmare!
God knows how Joe user is supposed to do it.

Last night the last thing that my machine was
doing before I turned it off was play that DVD.
This morning Vista resumes from Hibernate,
and low and behold all my video playback filters are gone.
Where?  I've no idea.
I've no idea how you could remove them.
I suspect a restart will resolve it...

However I'm sure hibernate doesn't usually do this!
I've got a £25 box from Lidl that plays my DVD's first time
everytime, but unfortunatley doesn't have an output to my computer screen.

A complete restart... and still no DVD Filters...
I mean how does that happen?!

*OK I'm officially blaming MC now (*Looks Official*)
Since WMP still plays the DVD fine, but
MC claims there's no filters  :-[

OK I figured it out. *Apologise profusley to MC*
You'll like this one.

Last night I had this dilema after watching Underworld,
I'd left my mobile phone back at my parents house.
I use my phone as an alarm clock in the mornings to wake me up.

I was kind of stuck for a while, then I suddenly realised my Cowon D2 player
had an alarm clock on it, although it had no speaker.

So I yoinked the cable for my Amp from my computer out the back, and hooked it up to my
D2.  I then ran a quick test and low and behold I had a pretty good sounding stereo alarm clock.

This morning I read Matt's post and go to do a test, but the music (Film) wouldn't play.
I get back this evening to do more testing and notice, that the system claims to be muted,
and won't let me unmute.

It turns out that the soundcard automatically detects whether an audio cable is plugged in,
and if not disables the device.

In disabling the soundcard the DVD Filters won't load for some reason,
and as a result.... the DVD won't play.

Plug the cable back in, the device becomes re-enabled and the DVD filters load,
and instead Vista's copyright protection scheme detects something has change and
refuses to play. (Resolved by a restart I've found in the past)

You can not do a "Jump to -> Title n -> Chapter m"?

Is this available thru the OSD yet?

You can not do a "Jump to -> Title n -> Chapter m"?

You can see the different chapters, and you can click on them,
and the blue bar at the bottom even tells you it's going to change
chapter... but it doesn't.

In WMP it shows you the chapters but they are greyed out.
I've got to send the DVD back today, so won't be able to perform any more testing.

Tonights DVD is Pans laberynth.

3 DVD's I've had since I've started this lovefilm subscription... and 3 different problems!

This one goes straight to the menu ok, and then won't let me select any of the menu items.
Instead using the mouse drags the movie round, which in itself is quite irritating :-(

If I skip on to chapter 1 then everything goes black...
Vista Restart coming right up...

I've found that each DVD can have a different navigation system. For example, I gave up trying to play 'Bread and Tulips' on my HTPC before I realised that you can ONLY navigate the menu with the arrow and Enter keys. Clicking on the play movie button does nothing. In other movies that works fine. So, a few days ago a music concert DVD showed the same behaviour (was unresponsive to mouseclicks). I tried my keyboard and presto! it worked fine. Not saying that's your problem, but bear it in mind perhaps?
Also, AnyDVD allows you to skip ads and go straight to the movie or menu. I'm currently using the trial and it's a delight. I put in a DVD and MC asks hat I want to do. I say play movie and in seconds I'm at the main menu. You can even rip DVDs with this setting enabled, so that playing the IFO will go directly to menu or movie even if AnyDVD isn't installed on the PC playing the IFO. As soon as the trial is over, I'll be registering/buying.

Found another disc with Forced adverts  >:(
This time I'm hoping to watch The Crow : Wicked Prayer.
So far I've grown a grey beard and there's still no sign of the film.

[Edit]
Eventually got to the film.  Had many ingredients to be really good but sadly wasn't.
The original easily still the best.

I tried playing it in WMP and again WMP can skip through the adverts where MC can't.
