Something happened (Windows update?) a few weeks ago that caused my Note 9 to only connect to Win7 when the phone was in the mode for image transfer, not for file transfer. This caused me to struggle with it for a while, then draw Matt into it, and we both tried a lot of things that didn't work.
Tonight, after an Android update, it wouldn't connect to Win7 at all.
It still connected to Win10 and I could use file transfer mode and JRiver to acquire images from it. It worked perfectly on Win10.
After reading a little on the Internet, I found a recommendation at thedroidguy.com (https://thedroidguy.com/2018/11/samsung-galaxy-note-9-not-detected-or-recognized-by-pc-1093485) to install a driver for the phone and suggested downloading Samsung's SmartSwitch, which included a driver.
This worked. I skipped the part of the driver install where Windows looks in Windows Update.
Everything is back to normal on the Win10 machine now. Thanks, thedroidguy!
