Title: MC 23 not recognizing device
Post by: maddog510 on March 28, 2018, 10:14:57 am
When I plug my LG V20 into my PC, MC 23 doesn't reconize it but it shows up in Windows Explorer & I can browse the internal & external storage of the phone. Any suggestions? Also the phone is set to the file transfer protocol.

Try this: Go to Tools>Options>Handheld and select "add a device".

I tried that & my phone isn't listed. Strange thing is it works with Windows Media Player.

If you're using the 64-bit build of MC23 on Windows, it doesn't support handheld sync unless you can mount the drive in Windows (meaning the mounted device has to have a drive letter to be able to use it with the 64-bit version of MC23 on Windows).

You might have to use the 32-bit build of MC23 if you want to sync a handheld.

How do I mount the phone as a drive?

You can't. Use the 32bit version of MC for now, or sync to a hard drive folder and then copy the files to your mobile. You can also export playlists from MC to the folder, and they will work if the locations stored in them are set appropriately.

It is the detection process which doesn't currently work in 64bit, for technical reasons. Windows Explorer and hence Windows Media Player have already had those technical reasons fixed.

This will be fixed in MC24.

That's a poor design. A $50 music player won't recognize a device. SMH.

Have you tried the 32-bit version?
If you're only using it for music, there's essentially no need to be using the 64-bit version.

I'll just wait a couple months for MC24 since I have a licence for it already.

I don't see a 32 bit version available for download from the site. Only 64 bit.

Wait, are you saying Handheld Support will NOT be available in MC 23 64bit version?

Can someone please clarify this?
TIA

If I was a betting man, probably not - I wouldn't be surprised if MC 23.0.104 is the last MC23 build. MC23's development has more-or-less ended and all the development focus is with MC24, which will have handheld sync with 64-bit MC on Windows.

That is indeed correct. Porting Handheld support to 64-bit required basically re-writing that entire module since the tech it was based on was discontinued by Microsoft and as such not available in 64-bit.

This was a huge project, and because we don't want to go forward with two different Handheld modules, it'll also replace the Handheld module in 32-bit - but because it was such a huge change, we decided to hold off until MC24, so we don't introduce something potentially unstable and requiring a lot of testing still this late in the MC23 cycle, which may end up leaving it partially broken in the worst case.

Instead, MC24 will get it, which is going through a long testing and development phase to make it stable and reliable. A new version is always a better time for us to do "breaking" changes, as it gives us the time to work through all the kinks with internal and public testing, before its considered "stable".

Its unfortunate that MC23 64-bit still lacks a few features, but offering 64-bit in MC23 already was initially more of a test then anything else, but it worked pretty well that we accepted that some features may require additional work after it was released. The alternative would've been that we did all that work beforehand, and you may not have gotten 64-bit until MC24. But we usually prefer offering such things earlier, even if there are still known limitations.

As of MC24, 32-bit and 64-bit should have full feature parity, at least from our side. There are external components which are not always available in 64-bit, over which we have no influence.
