Title: Gizmo for BlackBerry PlayBook
Post by: Trying to snow on January 26, 2012, 08:14:19 am
The PlayBook will soon be updated to OS 2 which adds support for Android apps (well it allows apps to be easily and quickly ported to PlayBook).

Will Gizmo be made available to the PlayBook?

You could try installing it from this address

http://www.jriver.com/install_gizmo.html

I'll be interested in your results, as I should be getting a Playbook soon. The price was right  ;D

Thanks for the link to the apk - I don't understand all the ins and outs of it - I believe .apks can be 'sideloaded' fairly easily in OS 2, but apparently RIM have made it super easy to port existing Android apps over to the PlayBook, and I would really appreciate it if the J River guys could take a look at porting it over for us PlayBook owners.

Won't install from download link above, I think it needs to be modified per article from zdnet below....

A redesigned App World store now supports Android applications, as well as both AIR and native PlayBook OS applications. Android applications need to be repackaged for the PlayBook's Android player (which only supports Gingerbread applications that don't use Google services or device-native code). The Android Player is RIM's implementation of the Dalvik virtual machine used in Android, and developers should be able to port most applications to PlayBook without changing any code. RIM will curate Android apps in much the same way it does the rest of App World.

Do you have a Playbook with OS2 update, Marco? If so, what are your initial impressions?

Yes, just updated to OS2, don't see a huge difference so far, but it is a very nice device.

I've tried converting the apk to a bar file, but it just will not install.

If any of the J River developers want a free Blackberry Playbook, RIM are giving them away when you convert your apk to bar - it's supposed to be dead easy.

You could always use WebGizmo. I tried it on my Playbook even when it was on the 1.0.whaterver and it worked fine and works just as fine on the 2.0 OS.

WebGizo does work, but it will only play a single mp3, no playlists. >:(

Thanks for making the APK available. I've successfully converted it to a Bar file which I installed on my BB Playbook with OS2.
Tried to upload it but the file size is 977KB and the attachment limit is 700KB. Is there a location in the forums where I can upload it for anyone interested in it?

Started looking for it, but can't find it. Maybe there is a delay before it's approved??

I haven't received a notification that it's been approved. I did post it in the Crackberry forums, here's the link: http://forums.crackberry.com/android-app-sideloading-f258/gizmo-bar-wells-fargo-apk-bar-708400/

I've got Gizmo running nicely on my Playbook. One issue; the volume buttons don't work when using it as a remote control. They continue to change the local speaker volume.

Added it to the plugin downloads. Sorry for the delay.
It's under "Other" and sort by more recent.
Or a direct link: http://accessories.jriver.com/mediacenter/mc_data/plugins/Gizmo_Bar_for_BB.zip (http://accessories.jriver.com/mediacenter/mc_data/plugins/Gizmo_Bar_for_BB.zip)

Webgizmo may work now as well since it uses html 5 for playing multiple items if it's available. Can someone try it and report back?

Use the build from the top of this board.

OK, after I figured out how to install a .bar file ? (seriously RIM, wanna support Android apps? Make it easier to install them!) I was like  :o and then I was like  ;D and now I'm like  8) !!!! Once again the JRiver team blows me away! I fall in love with Gizmo for my Droid, now to have it on my PlayBook (with the built in stereo speakers) I'm like a kid in a candy store!!! The display is soooooooo nice, especially portrait mode!

I tried it last night. Version .119 I believe.

I was using Dolphin Browser HD.

I selected an audio smartlist, then clicked Play All. The first track appeared, then started playing when I clicked on it.

There were no controls visible, and the timer never moved even when the song was playing (see pic below).

After the song was finished, the next track never loaded.

Webgizmo didn't play at all using the stock Playbook browser.

Ok, thanks for trying it. Our default format for transcoding with webgizmo is mp3 and unfortunately there is no one audio format that all browsers support with html 5. It was worth a try though...

You might want to try googling for installing bar files on BlackBerry. MGD_King figured it out somehow. Since we don't have a BB here it's not possible to give you more information.

This is pretty much what I used (same instructions, different site). You'll need the DDPB application (http://ddpb.dauden.vn/), and the latest version is 1.0.9. First time I tried I was using an older version and it didn't work. The latest works just fine.

I just want to say thanks - works perfect on my playbook.

Also, the webgizmo also works perfect (but still prefer gizmo ofcourse) using stock browser.

Quick question - does the bar file for playbook need to be kept updated?
