Title: Tower Digital--No Big Deal
Post by: jgreen on June 28, 2006, 11:56:06 am
This week Tower Records (USA) opened up a .99/per download online store to purchase tracks, a la itunes.  They trumpeted their "higher bitrate" WMA tracks and enticed me to give it a try.

Verdict:  yawn.

The files are 192 kbps WMA, which is higher than the 128 kbps AAC on itunes, but an open question as to whether they are of superior fidelity.  Meanwhile, you can still rent your tracks from Napster or Performer Digital at the same "higher bitrate" than Turtleneck Boy's tracks, and at $10/month it will be decades before you regret renting them vs purchasing.

Meanwhile, isn't ANYONE (legally) going to sell me LOSSLESS download tracks?  I'll pay more than .99 for them--c'mon!
