I think you could use Rename, Move & Copy, under Library Tools, to move them according to Genre.  But why bother?  MC will separate them, no matter where they are physically located.

Before making a start on ripping CDs back in 2013, I made a detailed study of my options for file and folder naming. I was well aware that metadata was the key that enabled easy browsing of my (95% classical) collection using software such as JRiver Media Center on my PC and MinimServer on my NAS, but I still wanted wanted the physical folder structure to make sense - especially as I was planning to store MP3 copies of my music files on my Android phone (using the same folder structure), for use when I was away from home and without a reliable connection to my NAS.

At that time, I couldn't find any Android music player app that understood the special needs of classical music (focused on Composer and Work, rather than Artist and Album). Even today, I don't think there are any Android music players that meet my needs for classical metadata-based browsing. I therefore wanted the physical location of the music files on my phone to be easily browseable.

To achieve this, I decided to store most of my classical rips in a folder hierarchy of Composer, Album, and Work, with most of my non-classical rips being stored in a simpler hierarchy of Artist and Album. Compilation albums are handled in a slightly different manner. It didn't take too much effort to configure dBpoweramp CD Ripper to do all this automatically (helped by the fact that it has a Compilation checkbox).

Sadly, it doesn't look like MC can do the same thing. Manually moving the files after an MC rip using Rename, Move & Copy would be a tedious process that would more than negate the benefits of avoiding the manual import of a dBpoweramp rip.

1. I use No-Tunes to disable iTunes. Small script someone wrote. Love it! Google it, you can find it on Github

2. CD to flac is fine. Other than the space it takes up, it's probably the best way to go. Seems like you don't have a lot of experience ripping? ...if so, I recommend XLD for ripping.

3. Sorry, I'm no help on this one.

Hi, I'm new to MC,

Just did a portable installation of MC32 using a windows 10 computer onto an external hard drive and then created my library on that same external hard drive.

I then installed MC32 on my Mac (OSX 14.4.1). I linked the Mac installation to the windows created library on the external hard drive. At this point, the entire library is visible on my mac, but everything is a dead link.

Afterwards I've been trying to write the correct portability rule so my mac can correctly read the links. Not sure what I'm doing wrong, but after more than several dozen tries I haven't gotten to work.

At the same time, I have no problems adding music to the windows library from from my mac and that I could play.

Additional details:
Name of external drive: GOODMUSIC_K
Location of media and on the external drive: /GOODMUSIC_K/MEDIA/
Location of MC library on external drive: /GOODMUSIC_K/MEDIA/JRiver/Application Data/Media Center 32/Library/

On Windows, the external drive has been mounting as drive H: (if that matters?)

On Windows the filename path for my music in MC (as shown in MC) is generally:  (Install Drive):\MEDIA\...
One specific example would be:
(Install Drive):\MEDIA\MUSIC\zappa\1979 - sheik yerbouti\09-Bobby Brown Goes Down.mp3

On Mac, the filename path for the one song I added to MC (as shown on MC ) is:
\Volumes\GOODMUSIC_K\MEDIA\MUSIC\Nikola Tesla.mp3

Can someone please tell me what my portability rule should be?
I have a feeling I'm missing some tiny detail (e.g., pipe, backslash instead of forward slash, etc.), so I would appreciate a precise as response as possible.
Or is it something else I'm missing?

Thanks!

antenna,
You've made this complaint more than once before, and I replied that you were modifying files that were part of MC.  You should not be surprised if we also modify them.

Changes may sometimes disappoint, but changes are necessary to keep MC up-to-date.

No change is not an option.

If I may become a bit reflective at this point....

I use MC, i.e., MC for me is a tool, as a means to convey the digital ones and zeroes that reside on my data server (and elsewhere) to my senses for enjoyment.

So, when I use, e.g., Theater view, my first concern is experiencing what I want to experience.

That is why the new Theater view was so shocking.

My carefully crafted info panels disappeared.

It reminded me of two experiences I've had:

1) Apple iTunes - when Apple overrode my info settings in the playback. (a main reason why I went looking elsewhere and found JR's MC)

2) Microsoft, trying to make an operating system a product, i.e., trying to make Windows a product I want, instead of saying it is the means to what I want to do with computers.

OK, now, I'm back to MC.

What do I want from MC?

1) Please play my digital files correctly.

2) To repeat,  please play my digital files correctly.

In my experience, MC excels in that desire.

So, imo, stop trying to make MC the product I want.

Make it the means I want to use to enjoy my digital files.

To that end I, again, extend my many thanks for the ability to preserve text-oriented info pages.

Hi,
using Linux Mint on Leptop with external Samsung BlueRay CD device.

MC recognize  CD device but shows not titles. Also with double click nothing happened.

Rhythmbox can read und play the CD.

So, what's  going wrong?

We just use windows HDR support which should be hardware agnostic. Can you set your desktop to HDR in Windows?
What does the information box in the JRVR HDR settings say?

I'm guessing that to create something like the dBpoweramp naming examples I quoted earlier, I will have to use JRiver's Expression Language (https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Expression_Language. Is that correct?
I think you could use Rename, Move & Copy, under Library Tools, to move them according to Genre.  But why bother?  MC will separate them, no matter where they are physically located.
