JRiver now has a new Playlist Server system. It's called Doctor Who. It will eventually be linked to Play Doctor and will create better playlists, using both your local tracks and some from the Internet.
- You can upload your playlists and smartlists to it, then download them from another machine.
- You can browse other users playlists and download them.
- With downloaded playlists, MC will look for matching tracks in your library first, then online (presently using our Performer Store of 40,000,000 tracks). Samples or full length, depending on your Performer account status. Amazon is also searched and previews are available.
To upload playlists:
- You'll need the latest build from the MC21 board.
- You will need to turn on the Doctor Who feature in Tools > Options > General > Features.
- Then check for updates one more time. You should see Doctor Who at the bottom of your playlists. Drag any playlist to it to upload.
- Click on the cloud icon next to any lists on the right to download.
- Any downloads will be found at the top of playlists, under "Downloaded Playlists".
Before you can upload a playlist, you must sign up for an account using your forum name if possible, and then use the e-mail you receive to activate the account

We would like to add a way for people to rate the playlists.
-
few months ago, the youtube tv plugin in Theater View stopped working, so i asked if feedly could be implemented, InsaneRC informed me of YouTubeTV APP, but one of the prerequisites was you needed to have google chrome as jrivers default browser.
more info here - http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=94768.0
-
We will probably be able to make the Chrome engine work, too.
[Edit -- should work now in build 123 or above.]
-
gr8t news thanks!

We would like to add a way for people to rate the playlists.
Please add this for "regular" playlists also, being able to rate local playlists is very useful.
-

What's the matching logic?
-
What's the matching logic?
It checks for exact matches first, then drops down an increasingly "fuzzy" ladder using mainly canonicalized song and artist names and song duration. We use thresholds for how close the "fuzzy" matches need to be. I'm sure we'll be tweaking this as we gain a larger collection of playlist metadata and get a better understanding of the type of "messiness" we need to deal with. Feel free to post examples of where we *should* have found a match but didn't.

Me thinks "Dr Who" might be copyrighted?
-
At this time, you must use IE as your browser engine in MC. It's set under the Tree and View menu.
Move this line to the top of the post - it would have saved me a lot of signing in. signing in again, signing in again...
-
The mention of Youtube makes me think that using music from Youtube in these playlists would be cool.
-

You can't copyright a title.
It could be trademarked, but those don't work the same way.

Are you using Beta version 118+ ? Confused as even using Latest channel 115 is as high as I can go and don't see 118 posted anywhere?
-
Expect a build with this feature later today or tomorrow. Instructions are in the first post. The build required is 123 or higher.
The web interface is still changing.
The search for tracks not found in your library uses both MediaNet and Amazon at this time.
Smartlists can also be uploaded and downloaded.
-
I just used the Performer Store to make a playlist called "1967" and uploaded it. It's ten tracks that are a snapshot of the music I heard on the radio in Oakland, California when I was just out of college.
There was a DJ named Edward Bear (http://www.jive95.com/whos_where.htm) on a station called KSAN, and he just made it all work. I didn't smoke much, but the secondary smoke was plenty. The music was incredible.
-
Do you see your own playlists in the list after you upload them? I just dragged a playlist to Doctor Who after registering and logging in, but I'm not seeing it, and I'm not sure if I should try again or not, for fear that it will just lead to a duplicate being posted.
On that note, will there be an option to delete your own playlists from Doctor Who?
-
You should see the playlists you drag to Doctor Who. Are you using 20.0.124?

There's a delete button for your own playlists.
-

Indeed I am.
Maybe it just didn't take. I'll try again later tonight.
-
...Nope. Not working in 20.0.124. Dragging a playlist to the little Doctor Who icon flashes a small popup that disappears too fast to read. Playlist does not appear in the list. Dragging it directly into the webpage (in MC) results in a "There is nothing to play" warning. Playlist still does not appear in the list.
-
Something preventing outbound access? Firewall? Pop-up blocker?
The playlist has to have at least 5 tracks and not more than 300.
-
Disable firewall temporarily. No dice.
-
What is the little message trying to say? Any idea?
Try setting MC to use the other browser engine. You might get a better error message.
Did you try a reboot?
-
Ah! There we go. It appears that it still doesn't quite work properly using the Chromium engine. Internet Explorer engine works fine, though.
How do I add notes to a playlist?
-
In MC, click on the playlist. At the top of the playlist on the right, you will see "Click here to add notes."
-
I can also report that chromium engine did not work here either.
I simply got a download error, until i switched to IE.
-
How about some way of Liking Playlists, or even just a download # that is sortable. At some point you will have more than you can browse so sorting my popularity may make sense.
-
We'll do that eventually.
There will also be a way to filter the list.
-
This is pretty cool. I don't know if i need ratings (music tastes differ so much ratings might be moot) but perhaps a way to mark favorite users and or sort users by number of downloads. Or a way to categorize playlists.
Also I see the sample tracks from downloaded playlists show up in my library views- which I'd really rather not have. If I buy a track then sure, but I don't want samples to show up in my various views. Any thoughts on how to do that?
-
Before you can upload a playlist, you must sign up for an account using your forum name if possible, and then use the e-mail you receive to activate the account
Is this possible from the Mac version? I don't see any indication of somewhere to try to sign in or register.

There hasn't been an IE on Mac for a very long time and I'm sure JRiver isn't dependent on it on Mac. I don't see any kind of browser option in the Tree & View menu. I'm thinking Dr. Who just isn't supported at all on Mac?
Brian.
-
It's probably not yet working on the Mac.

When will this feature be available for Mac users?
-
Can it include tracks or albums from Tidal?
-

No.
-
When will this feature be available for Mac users?
I can't say for certain. We're looking at it now.
-
Hmm, I'm trying this out and it looks pretty neat, but I'm getting some weird behavior with track matching.
- I downloaded a playlist while my ipod was attached for syncing. Several of the tracks matched to locations on the ipod rather than my library. For instance, the filename is "F:/iPod-Control/Music/F00/NNCW.mp3"
- Some tracks are matching to the low bitrate or mp3 versions in the J River Conversion Cache directory, rather than the top file in the stack
- Very strangely, there were also matches to .cda files from songs in my library, and that were ripped months ago. So the filename is listed as something like "Unknown Album\Track14.cda"
-
Maybe the servers are overloaded due to the number of people that might be creating accounts for Doctor Who. But for some reason an hour later I have still not received my confirmation e-mail after signing up. I have also tried resending it and still no dice?
Carl

Spam filter?
-
Nothing in "Junk" or "Trash" in my online webmail. On the computer the process I use to check e-mail initially is before any spam filters.
So I don't think they have been intercepted on my end.
Carl.

I tried creating an account this morning and received a confirmation e-mail within a couple of minutes, so I don't think that the servers are overloaded.

Our database shows that an email was sent out yesterday to an email address that begins with "c********r" ? (disguised with asterisks) Does that sound right?
-
Yes. That sounds right?
Would you receive any kind of bounce back message if it was returned for some reason?
Also can you tell me the address it would have been sent from so I can check what is happening with my e-mail hosting company?
Thanks
Carl.
-
mediacenter at jriver dot com
Our mail log shows that an email was sent successfully twice, about a minute or two apart. You probably clicked the resend button?
-
Yes I did.
Ok I will have to put in a request to my hosting company to see where they went.
Thanks.
Carl.
-
So it seems that I had some sort of spam filter turned on at the hosting level. Must have been some sort of default. In any case managed to get it to sign in and added / uploaded 1 playlist and 1 smartlist.
I now of course have another question though.
I see a lot of users on there with comments under their user names. I can't seem to find any place to add or edit comments for my own account?
Carl.

Tried Doctor Who this morning and it works perfect, very cool, but got some questions:
1. I notice by other people's playlists they have a custom icon , I just have the default one with the music note, how can I change it?
2. I notice under other people's playlists it lists some of the songs or artists in the playlist (taking about the lists on the left), mine doesn't have any, how come, does someone have to download it and play it first before the song titles are shown?
3. Is there a Doctor Who website where I can make the changes I am talking about above?
4. When people download my list or just lists in general is it going to say somewhere how many times it has been downloaded and can ratings be applied to people's playlists?
5. I noticed that the songs on the playlist that I dont have on my computer will only play for 30 seconds as a sample from the performer store, understand that part, is there some kind of a performer account I could get that would play the full songs and still wouldn't have to pay for them or is it basically 30 second samples or buy and nothing else?
Programming Note : please look for my alternative playlist I uploaded, it has 30 alternative tracks in it, all my playlists are overall comps I have made from my long sought after collection.
Hope to see more people using this service, it is kind of a cross between pandora and microsofts groove music app that allows sharing of playlists though I haven't tested that out fully yet.
Thanks
TC :) :) :)

It grabs the avatar from your forum account.

No. They should show up. You may have to expand the playlist. Can you post a screenshot?
3. Is there a Doctor Who website where I can make the changes I am talking about above?
No. The only access is what you see. That may change in the future. We're not sure where this leads yet.
4. When people download my list or just lists in general is it going to say somewhere how many times it has been downloaded and can ratings be applied to people's playlists?
It should show downloads now, and some kind of "like" system in the future.

To get the full track, you would need to have a Performer account. We hope to improve this.

Thanks for the info Jim, I changed my icon under profile settings, thought I had done that before, guess not.
Not seeing download numbers anywhere and don't see songs under my list on the left, I think someone has to play it before they appear not sure, probably both the song titles and download counts maybe.

Here's what it looks like if you expand it:

Ok, I now see the download count on the expanded view over on the right, still dont see artist/genre info over on the left side, oh well.
-
It could be a bug.
-
It does not seem to be pulling my avatar from my JRiver forum account?

Are you using the same e-mail?

Are you using the same e-mail?
Oops. I am now :-)

You can now filter the user shared playlists shown in the Doctor Who view. There's a window in the upper left of the view that allows entering artists and genres that you'd like to see in the results. Just type something and press enter. You can also exclude artists/genres by prefixing them with a dash/minus symbol '-'.
For example, if you like "indie" and "alternative" genres but also like a little Beatles music mixed in, but aren't crazy about songs labeled with "classic rock" or "electronic" genres, you could try this:

-
Doctor Who now has a user "Follow" feature where you can select to follow users whose playlists you like. You can then filter the left-hand user list to your followed users if desired. You can "Follow" or "Unfollow" a user by clicking on their username in the list and then clicking the Follow/Unfollow button in the header area.

How do you edit top artists, top genre?

These are auto-generated, being the top 10 most common entries in the playlists you have uploaded.

Just started uploading a few playlists and downloaded a few. I have a few quick questions:
1 - it would be good to have a popularity or ranked list of downloaded playlists to see where to start
2 - any way to add a right click - send to Doctor Who? Tired of dragging these all the way down to the bottom! :)
3 - on downloaded files - can't sort by Buy column or by the column that shows 30 seconds - would be nice to easily see what songs aren't matching - I do see how you can sort by filename though....
4 - which leads me to matching - I have several songs in my library that didn't match up for some reason - anyway to determine why or can there be a way to manually link these with songs in the library?
I do see that there are several that have () and additional information - e.g. (live) and I have the studio version. I am wondering if there is a way to strip these out on your side so that the if the name matches it finds it - also I downloaded one of my own playlists and it failed to find 1 song so not sure why that would happen.
5 - How do you rescan a list to see if it can find it? I tried deleting and redownloading but didn't seem to change (although it did bump up the number of downloads for the list)
6 - an option to remove the ones that don't match with one click?
7 - any chance to allow larger playlists than 400?
8 - if I have downloaded a list - it would be good to see who it came from if I wanted to go back to that user - any way to show this?
Anyway - I love this - I put in a request for this type of sharing on the MC 11 board in 2005... (broncodan)...
-
hello,
is it possible to use this feature (uploading and downloading playlists from other users) without having a subscription to the performer store?
Thanks
-

It is. I think it's explained in the first post. You'll just get 30 second samples of anything you don't have in your own library.
-
We're not quite ready for feature requests, but I'll answer a couple of the questions.
1. Not available yet.
2. Maybe another tab.
7. More than 400 -- maybe. How many do you need?

Thanks for your reply Jim. But what about the tracks i don't have and that are in a shared playlists (somebody's playlist)? Is it also 30 sec or the entire track is played?
As you can see i'm still a bit confused about this feature.
I also would like to know, as already asked in a preview post, if you have short term plans to provide a service like Medianet for the non US users (which represents 2/3 of your market...)
Thanks and have a nice day
-
If the track is in someone else's playlist and you don't have it, we try to find a 30 second sample to play. If you are a subscriber to the Performer store in MC, you'll get the full track if it is available.
To use Performer, you just need a US zip code.
-
ok that's clearer now.
About ther Performer solution, do you really think people are using this service? And that this service can keep people no using streaming services (instead of JRiver)? The idea of doctor is good, as i already said that, but the streaming solutions offered here is far from what we can expect in terms of quality and attractivity. I tried to find informations about this Performer store: nothing in the wiki. I look in the internet and i find out a strange website, where nothing is clearly explained (http://performer-media-center.software.informer.com/). Then i understand i have to download the program (operation didn't work), but why? It should at least be integrated in JRiver!
Plus the quality of the tracks is very poor (128 Kbps in wma) when the concurrence offers 320 or higher.
I may have missed a few great things about this Perfomer media center, but as the streaming services are growing, JRiver should give a better answer to this.
So my question remains opened.
And i keep the pressure on you :)
-
It is integrated with MC. It's not a separate download.
-
I'm in, sharing some playlists ;D
-
I was looking for a playlist of Christmas songs and noticed that Arindelle has had over 700 downloads of his playlists! He's making everyone else look bad. ;)
If anyone has any good Christmas playlists, please upload a couple. Thanks.
-
Hi Jim,
I uploaded a few of my Xmas Playlists for you. Hope you find something you like.
Some additional feedback on Dr. Who:
1 - bigger playlists - you asked how many I would want - I think 500 would be good.
2 - it seems like the program downloaded some 30 second clips of songs that I don't have - file location is noted as blank - so not sure where these are but I deleted them - although I do like the ability to listen to some of the clips I would prefer that these are streamed and not stored on my system somewhere.
Thanks again for the hard work the team puts into this program - I have recommended to many friends and been a supporter since it was media jukebox....
-
Thanks for the Xmas lists!
The 30 second tracks aren't downloaded, but they may show up in the library. They probably shouldn't. If you have a Performer subscription, full versions of most will play. Explained in the first post.
Thanks for the kind words.
-
Hey, today I wanted to try the Doctor Who function.
But when I drag my playlist into the Doctor Who I get a HTTP 500 Error. And my playlists won't be listed/uploaded. Although when I try again to upload it it says "Playlist XXX already exist"
Any solution? I really want to use my playlists from my former Laptop on my new Computer :S
edit: works now, nevermind

I did not receive an email with the Confirmation Instructions. The Message Tracking Logs for incoming mails did not show any incoming email.
Today I had a Resend Confirmations Instructions entered, but again, I did not receive an email. I checked again the Message Tracking Logs of my Exchange Server.
Could someone advise me what possibly the problem could be?
Thanks,

Use New Topic in the upper right corner of the index page to start a thread, or reply to a similar thread.
We send the e-mail. After that, it's up to the Internet. It can often be found in your spam folder. It comes from buy-button at jriver.
You could try a different e-mail address. You can contact me directly if you need more help. I'm jimh at jriver.
-
Good Morning, Jim;
I tried another email address. To no avail. Subsequently I had sent you an email to jimh at jriver. Did you receive that email? I'm asking, because I didn't receive a response email. Pls confirm.
Thank you,
swith6343

I don't think so, but send again right now and I'll look for it. I usually reply (unless someone is being an ass).
-
Dear Jim,
I just resent my email of July 22 to you.
Kind regards,
Gjalt
-
I received it and replied.
-
I tried to log in but could not, so did the "Forgot your password" and click on the link from my E-Mail while I could enter a new password I just got an error saying "We're sorry, but something went wrong. If you are the application owner check the logs for more information".
Also had to switch MC Browser from Chromium to IE (in Chromium you don't see the Dr Who web page at all).
Thanks
Nathan

I see the same. We'll check. Sorry about the problem.
-
