Title: Photo Server for JRiver
Post by: JimH on June 03, 2005, 09:46:27 pm
We've set up Coppermine, a photo server, just to test upload and display of photos.

You can visit it at http://yabb.jriver.com/cpg/

If you'd like to try uploading, here's how:

1.  Register.

2.  Wait for the confirmation e-mail and click on the link.

3.  Log in.

4.  Copy a few photos to a temp directory and resize to about 1024X768 first.

5.  Upload the files.

I got a few uploaded and added then ran out of space.
Maybe 800 * 600 would be a better size for the space allowed.

Should I get my hopes up?  Maybe MC12 will include functionality for uploading items in MC to coppermine...  or maybe someone will write a plugin.  It would sure be great to be able to use metadata in MC to populate the metadata in coppermine!

Coppermine worked great out-of-the-box (well, being open-source, it didn't actually come in a box!) and I like the fact that all the information is stored in a mysql database.

Should I get my hopes up?
Maybe.  But thanks for the lead.  And amazing photos of the sandstorm.

Is Mark on the left or right in the picture?

Mark's the civilian on the left!  He's what some might call a "railroad guru".

I've made this thread sticky for a while.  We're thinking about offering a free site and adding automatic upload from MC -- select pictures, press share, and wait for the e-mail that has the link to the pictures.

This is getting interesting!

I uploaded a nice view on the French Alps!!
With Second picture I went over Quota.

Doing this straight from MC to a bigger-sized album would be nice.

Are you thinking of some kind of authorization, so looking at the foto's is restricted to persons of choice?

:D

Be sure to resize before sending.  The current limit should allow several photos of 1 MB or less.  We'll raise this shortly.

How about an extension to publish directly to Flickr and/or blog ?

We'd like to do that.

We've raised the limit on how much storage space you can use.  It was 1MB (about 10 pictures at 800x600).  It's now 32 MB (about 300 pictures).   If there's enough interest, we'll raise it again.

There have been some great pictures added the last couple of days.  Here's an example from user zootster:

Try logging out and back in.

We did bump the maximum total size.  There is a maximum size per photo (2048x2048).

Logged out/in, still getting bounced, with this message:

"Disk quota exceeded

You have a space quota of 1024K, your files currently use 952K, adding this file would make you exceed your quota. "

Image in question is 1017/768.

I'll swap out one of the other images.

Not sure what your longer term plans are, but if you are doing some integration with an online gallery, mine would be for the one called "Gallery", found at:

http://gallery.menalto.com/

G2 - the new version - is very powerful and extensible.

you may like Microsoft Photo Story 3 then also.  Its free.  I dont usually recommend MS products but this one is worth trying, especially for free.  It makes basic movies from a set of photos, i dont think it can create flash format though.

JAlbum is what I have been using for years. It can take nested folders of images and build complete web sites based on them. Truly wonderful when you have 10 years worth of photos neatly nested by year and month and trip.

http://jalbum.net/

Written in Java which makes it way cooler because it runs anywhere.

Just got this message:

Disk quota exceeded

You have a space quota of 1024K, your files currently use 850K, adding this file would make you exceed your quota.

This was only my third file - all were resized to 1024px wide...

?

I'd like to see IlPad get more space for photos and also start a blog.  Thank you, IllPadrino.

IlPadrino,
I've changed the settings for the server, but it seems to have no effect.  We'll keep looking, but we're a person short right now on the network team.

I moved the maximum to 32 megs and the maximum upload size to 8 megs per picture. If anyone has trouble with large uploads let us know. The upload size depends on more than one variable. Thanks...

We've changed this again.

100MB maximum storage
2MB per picture

I suggest that you convert pictures to 1024X768 before uploading.  Here's an example of a picture of that size:

Is this project still running?
I just tried to register.
When  I clicked the ok button after filling in my details
I got this window appear with nothing but a titlebar (and no title!)
the only way to get rid of it was to press Alt-f4.
Logging in under my new registration caused the same box...

Looks fine to me. I just created a new user and logged in. I wonder if your javascript support is broken? Are you using I.E? One of our users here had a similar problem and couldn't resolve it, he had to install the I.E.7 beta to get javascript back in I.E

Currently If I try and create a user with my
email address chrisinbmth@yahoo.co.uk
it tells me that 'Another user has already registered with the email address you entered.'

However if I go to the I forgot my password
area and type the same email address in
I get the following
'Selected user does not exist!'

I am using IE 6.0 XP SP2

Would love to see this, presuming it allows me to login :)
Or have the photogallery as a device in MC =)

The database says that you haven't activated the account yet (by clicking on the email it sent you). Seems like it ought to have a way of resending that if you never got it.

I'll activate the account manually and then you should be able to login with the password you registered with.

I think it might be an idea if a sticky remained on this service
as not many people appear to be using it at present
Yet it seems really useful  :)
I use Yahoo Photos but they don't allow full size.
I've tried other services but they are either too fiddly or too expensive...
And it's nice to be able to see everyones photos!

Uploading seems very slow, or is that just my connection?

I find the pixel limit irritating.  It would be better if it just scaled the picture as need be.
The last thing I want to be doing here is scaling my photos before upload.

I'm gonna go for uploading a photo a day from now on though :-D

Getting a new toy next week with 7.1 Mega Pixies, my first dip into the digital pool,
hope i don't get bit!

I LOVE my Canon SD500 (which has been updated to a 550 witha  bigger LCD).  It's small, light, and I carry it everywhere.  Best of all it takes GREAT photos!!!  If you haven't bought anything yet, check it out.

Here is an example of one that has been downsized...

 :)

I'm looking at something pretty similar from what I can see
Canon A620

If i can take some shots like that one i'll be very happy :-)

I've still got my SLR for serious stuff until I've got some bigger money
to spend on a digi SLR.  (not gonna happen anytime soon!)

It's on a high BW connection, you should be able to push at least 10 MB/sec to it.

It's for disk space considerations, if a lot of people uploaded a lot of full size images it could be a problem. Ideally what it ought to do I suppose is to dynamically shrink the images to the max size as you upload them. The uploading mechanism isn't that complex at this time.

It would be really useful if we could add folders at the
same time as adding a photo.  I keep uploading photos
only to find they don't fit in the folders I've currently got!

Also on the useful list, if the Photo Server can't yet
resize images,  as MC can do this using the image editing tool
it would be good if the image editing tool was accessable by right
clicking on an image currently displaying in the playing now view.
Next to Print/Delete image would be a good place...

It would be nice if we could upload things like screenshots here
that don't get shown in the public gallery.
This would be useful for things like Plugins, or showing problems
in MC?

Why not connect MC to one of the existing free services?
This service is limited and can't compare to any of the free services like:
http://www.23hq.com/
http://www.bubbleshare.com/

or even flickr.

Can someone explain the benefit of this service?

Any chance media center could be enhanced to support gallery2?

It's currently one of the best photo app's available to the best of my knowledge.

It has a program to upload images to it (Gallery Remote) but it'd be great if this functionality could be built into MC so we could mix it with use of it's photo management facilities (it's an extremly basic app so replicating it's funcationality would hopefully be easy).
