Title: Conversions from WAV to WMA Lossless is Broken -- "Failed to Convert"
Post by: blafarm on January 07, 2007, 10:16:14 am
I've searched high and low and can find no answer to this problem.

I can no longer convert WAV files to WMA Lossless using MC 11.1 on a XP SP2 computer with Windows Media Player 11 loaded.  When I change the Convert encoder settings to WMA VBR or CBR (or MP3 for that matter) -- there's no problem.  However, when the encoder is set to WMA Lossless I get "Failed to Covert" every time.

I have tested this on multiple computers -- using multiple sources and multiple destinations.

Anyone know what's going on here?  I've lost a week testing this and I really need to get this done.

Would someone please help me out?

I the only one having this problem?

Can someone from JRiver please comment on this?

Thanks for your feedback.

I believe that was caused by an update to Windows Media done by Microsoft.

I also think that MC12 will work.  Can you try it?

Thanks JimH -- that was the problem.

I did download v.12 -- and was about to test it -- but then made the decision to simply uninstall WM11.  I really need dependable conversions and didn't want to take the risk of any potential hiccups in the beta version.

I'll upgrade to 12 when it is rock-solid and when the conversions have been tested and validated by other users.

Thanks for your response.

Having the same problem using MC10. I've uninstalled Media Player 11, and roll back to Version 9, but still I can't convert to Win Media lossless. This have never been a problem earlier, using MC 10 with Media Player 10 (9?) installed. The problem started after I reinstalled Win XP, and then installed MC 10 again. Can anyone help please!?

Unfortunately uninstalling WMP11 does not return the previous Windows Media codecs. I have posted a link to Microsoft's codec removal instructions:

MS has published uninstall instructions that remove the new codecs too:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/11/readme.aspx#RollingbacktoapreviousversionofthePlayer (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/11/readme.aspx#RollingbacktoapreviousversionofthePlayer)

You may need to install the previous WM codec pack separately after the uninstall process:
ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/tmp/wmfdist95.exe. (http://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/tmp/wmfdist95.exe) (This is for Windows XP only.)

However for MC10 you may need an older version than this "wmfdist95.exe". WM95 was introduced with WMP10 and MC11 was changed to use it if I recall correctly. MC10 may not support it. However, possibly Microsoft's roll back process returns your previous codecs and you don't need to install them again.

MC12 is compatible with the codecs that WMP10 and WMP11 install. (I have not tried MC12 with older WM codecs.)

Thank's for your reply Alex B!
Is there any other way to convert .ape files to WM lossless format? Or is there a posibillity to play .ape file's in Media Player?
If not, what other lossless format do you recomend to convert .ape files to? Must be compatible with both JR,MC and WMP (WMC Edition)

I,m also using NetRemote 1.0. Does MC 11 and 12 work without any problems with NetRemote?

In advance, Thank's!

The only natively supported Lossless format in WMP is WMA Lossless. JRiver Media Center is one of the best converters for the WMA Lossless format. As I said, MC12 does not have problems with the two latest WMA Lossless codec versions and possibly it works with the older versions too.

However, the following programs can add Monkey's Audio support to WMP10 and Media Center 2005 Edition. (I have not tried them with WMP11 yet.)

A plugin for APE tags in WMP10 :

A DirectShow filter for decoding Monkey's Audio:

I don't use NetRemote. I hope someone else can answer.

Installed the plugin and directShow filter. Works great on both MCE and WMP 11

Thanks!!
