Title: Is MC22 supported by Mojave?
Post by: keisele81 on November 04, 2018, 08:49:25 am
Been using MC22 on my Mac for a few years with no issues.  After upgrading to Mojave MC22 crashes every time I try to open it.  I updated Security & Privacy for MC22 but that did not fix it.

Currently using a trial version of MC24, which is not crashing.  Not thrilled at the prospect of spending $60 so I can continue to use MC for basic tagging and file adjustments of my music library (I'm not a power user).

Is MC22 supported by Mojave?  Or do I need to buy MC24?  If I need to buy MC24, how long can I expect it to support future Mac OS upgrades before I would need to buy a future MC version?

It's a good question. Considering macOS Mojave was released two years after MC22's development ended, it's perfectly feasible to say that changes in a future macOS update after a MC version's development has ceased *could* prevent the older version of MC from working. And since MC22's development has ended, no updates for MC22 fixing the issue likely will be released. But, like you said, MC24 works since it's been updated to work with Mojave without crashing so it's working there - MC23 appears to work too after applying the Security & Privacy workaround.

Windows is a bit more forgiving when it comes to using older versions of MC with newer versions of Windows due to how well Windows is backwards compatible. Mac and Linux? Not so much... IMO, it's only a matter of time older versions of MC stop working (at least to an extent, or become completely broken) on newer macOS and Linux distro releases. Apple tends to make major changes with each macOS update which could break things with older applications. I also suspect running older MC for Linux builds on newer Debian or Ubuntu releases *could* cause issues like crashes and segfaults.

Unless the Security & Privacy workaround or another macOS setting workaround works, then it's likely safe to say MC22 (and earlier versions) likely isn't compatible with Mojave.

It's not $60 to upgrade.

MC 24 works 100% on Mojave.  No better than High Sierra.   HS was noticeably better than Sierra.   I personally think that Mojave is mostly cosmetic

There's some underlying changes in Mojave some of which are pretty major. For example the depreciation of OpenGL in favor of Metal as the backend in macOS - eventually this will probably affect MC for Mac once Apple removes OpenGL from macOS, especially theater view.

Plus iOS apps are coming to macOS in 2019. Yippie?

I don't know about MC22, but with MC24 & Mojave I had to make a change. i had to update Security & Privacy Settings > Accessability > MC should be listed in the box. Click un it & place check in "Allow apps to control computer." MC24 launched fine after this. It previously crashed immediately after launch.

Yeah, that issue is known and the workaround posted here: https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,117643.0.html

But make sure you're using the latest MC24 build, as it shouldn't crash anymore on Mojave.
