Title: Linux
Post by: JimH on July 31, 2013, 05:54:13 pm
This topic is about more than Linux, but that's where it's starting.  We've been porting to Linux and having some success.  It looks like we'll have pieces of the program springing to life in the next few months.  Like OSX, it is a long haul.

This opens some doors for JRiver, and you should benefit, even if you don't care about Linux.

Hardware
A lot of consumer devices now run Linux.

Devices like NAS drives, for instance.  Our DLNA Server might be nice there.

Media Streamers, as they're called.  Devices that you can play to from your computer.

Blu-ray players, which are a superset of a Media Streamer.  They can play a disc or play a file from another location.

Networked Home
Store or record in one location, play in another.

A router that runs Linux might also serve as a DLNA Server.

Home Theater PC
A computer running Linux, smarter than a Blu-ray player, less expensive than a PC, connected to your TV.

Thanks to Bob, Adam, and Matt for the hard work, and to the rest of the team for their support.

Only one thing to say:
GIMMIE  ;D

Seriously though, if I can just get a DLNA server running with no conversion to serve my fleet of Raspberry Pi's, then I'll be a happy bunny :)

Maybe I need to divert this Win 8 pro HTPC server newly built to Linux.
How far or any time frame?
Or use the extra Asus P6X58A-E pro for Linux project <grin>
Thanks again for the continued development.

George.

AFAICT, a Linux port opens up the door to a lot of appliances, which is a good thing for JRiver, and ultimately us MC junkies.

This is very good news indeed.  I don't know too much about the different 'flavors' of Linux, but I know unRAID and 1 or 2 others seem to be the most commonly requested.  In my case, a server that installs on unRAID, letting my windows and android devices each have their own "library" connected to the server is the ideal solution.  I really do hope that this server will just serve the media, and that the clients can have different views and ratings and other 'opinion based settings', all while simultaneously connected.

Fingers crossed :)

Thanks for the update Jim, it's very welcome news that you're well down the path already  8)

I've got a Linux based NAS and my skills with Linux are worse than noob status. That said, it's a fact of life now so I'm dealing with it and progressing up the learning curve. I'd expect the ideal situation would be a Linux MC streaming files through to the HTPC rather than via some other DLNA server. Currently, I've set up MC on the HTPC to access media files via a mapped network drive.

In my bones, I'm sure that this is a poor option from a network efficiency viewpoint. All I can say is that it's easy and it works. I'm on the lookout for ways to improve, which is why this post caught my eye.

The NAS that I've got has an HDMI output, so I can run it as a standalone console and run media from it (with appropriate non-J River software at the moment). I'd much rather be an MC only household but all in good time.

Keep it up Jim H. You guys are going down the path I was expecting. I'll wait patiently for more good things to happen. Love it..  ;D

Why does Linux always invoke this image then...  ;D

That's what Matt will look like when he's up to his neck in the linux version  ;D ;D

Several months before we have anything generally useful.

Greetings:

My thoughts have been geared towards Linux as of recent.

What I will do now is continue to use this new built for Win8 pro, of course , then get a pair of 3TB or 4tB hard drives, for Raid setup, when the Linux platform is ready, yank out the Windows 8 drives, insert the new drives for Linux.

Please do not forget my request for RS232 support and support for BD changers. Hopefully, the Linux version will blend in smoothly with RS232 control interface.

I am hoping all platforms (Windows, Mac, Linux) will share same library.

Thanks again.
George

I LOVE THIS.

Would love to run Media Server from my NAS, even without transcoding.

Thanks.  Thanks.  Thanks for working on this.

Well, I am interested and will be buying a copy of it. You guys plan on giving multi-platform discounts? (You knew that one was coming, didn't you? :)

The UI will be both more difficult and much easier under Linux than under OSX, and it ma lead to better library synching. Certainly it isn't difficult to run a rsync! All good stuff.

Best of luck on your challenging new enterprise!

Probably, but too soon to say on an exact feature set.  We're just working on the building blocks.

I'm with the other couple here who have said there are only a couple of progs keeping me having windows on any PC in my house, but given that my HTPC is a dedicated machine, if there was MC with Theater View for Linux I could easily rid myself of MS for that piece. Bring it on :-)

If possible, please reserve serial #1 for me <grin>
Please do not forget to include RS232 interface. My new Elite HTPC will be used for Win8. I need to start building another HTPC for Linux.

Thanks Thanks Thanks.

We had a little breakthrough with Linux today.  Matt got drawing working, with text, mouse response, buttons, etc.  Most of what we need for the real MC interface.  I wanted to see if he could post an image, just to give you an idea of what it would look like, but I missed him when I called.  From memory, this is pretty close (http://www.1paintings.com/images/Maternity-Joan%20Miro%20painting%202.JPG).

I'm really, really excited about this, and hope it comes out as an appliance (like unRAID) that can run from a thumb drive. For me that that would eliminate the following costs from my next MC build:

I'll be following this closely

It's so cute how it looks so broken and malformed. xD The start of something great. :)

Indeed, I know very little about Linux myself, but I've been considering the idea of doing the learning and switching to it from Windows. During these musings, I always think, "No... not until MC gets ported to Linux."

Sure enough... :D

Funny. Was the basis for the Linux code the Mac code? I was trying to find a mac screenshot to compare.

I ask because the above screenshot has the buttons close/min/max on the left, but the 'real' window buttons are positioned to the right.

Is the MC close button functional? :P

Sorry, have to ask... what distro is this running on?

Would be interesting if we had an informal poll of what distro folks are using.  I have a dual-boot with openSUSE 12.3(KDE)/Win7 and another "play" machine with dual-boot Mageia/Mint(KDE).  I like bare metal.

I'm actually running the AMD 13.8b Linux driver on openSUSE, of course, only 2-channel out with HDMI....but that may change sooner rather than later.  I can't get multi-mon to work right other than clone mode, but it is otherwise usable.

Not sure if that was irony or not (you never know with Jim!), but thats part of Linux desktop i hate. Dealing with fonts is always such a big mess, and if you're not careful everything looks like crap like the screenshot. Aliased pixel fonts. :)

In most cases thats not even the applications fault, but a config problem in the font server..

Thank you so much guys !

I would love to have JR Library Server run on my Synology NAS (TV, photos and music, no transcoding needed), but I realise the installation and control part would be an issue without the MC client part.  A text config file perhaps ?

I already have a Linux Samba server, but it holds only my blu-rays and it is WOL, I do not keep it running 24/7 (I only watch perhaps 4 movies a week).

Cheers,

Rudy

Bill

As far as I know, our DLNA Renderer has never had a problem with playing gaplessly.  It's mainly a problem with hardware devices that don't support gapless when used as a renderer.
