Title: Question re audio options
Post by: zonka on February 24, 2018, 04:08:38 pm
I'm using an Id Nuc attached via hdmi to my Marantz receiver.
Here are the questions:
1) under audio device should I choose hdmi dev=0 or front dev=0 ?
2) under volume should I choose system volume,  internal volume, or disable if I intend to use my receiver to control the volume?

I thought you said it was working with HDMI.  The HDMI choice is the correct one.

I would use Internal.

It works with both. I just wasn't sure if there was a preference that would send a more pure signal to my receiver.
Thanks

All of the device names are suggestions provided by alsa for each device.
In general, the

front:
and
hw:
ways of opening each device end up directly opening the device the same way.

add a mixer or other layer over the device access. For example, the pulse: device uses pulseaudio to share the device amongst multiple apps however that means that all of the apps have to use the same sample rate (which is 48k by default).
