Title: Any VFD Support
Post by: ths61 on March 19, 2011, 02:50:41 pm
Is there any way to access/tie into the MC16 metadata/state information to drive a VFD display?

I am planning on building out a new Sandy Bridge based system and the HTPC case has a 2x10 character VFD display option.

Thanks,
Tim

Would be cool to know, since I have an iMon VFD.
IIRC correctly there was a thread in the MC15 forum, but instead of "VFD" or "HTPC case 2-line LCD" the OP used "LCD Display" instead. This caused me great confusion since it was some thing like 2010 and here was someone asking if MC14 works with an LCD display. Anyway, I think that thread had some useful info - I think I'll try to find it.

Found it - more recent than I thought:

Seems like LCD smartie is the way to go.

Also, again, IIRC:

The latest iMon software has a plug-in / can be configured for MC. I'm not sure whether that is just for the remote control or whether it's for the display too.

Hi fitbrit,
since I have an IMON VFD as well, I just finished developing a first version of a MC Plugin which just shows artist and track title on the display. It works fine for me, but could do with lots of more work (eg choose which fields to display, randomly change fields, scroll long content etc).

Anyway, anyone interested at all?

Michael

Yes, please!
I may be a few weeks from being able to test it, but I'd love to try.

There's also this...

http://www.origenae.com/en/htpc_m10.htm (http://www.origenae.com/en/htpc_m10.htm) (drool)

Would the plugin be able to capture Now Playing data from a Zone, as well as what the MC machine is itself playing?

Hi Mib4755

Yes I am interested  :)
I have an origenae Htcp case equipped with VFD.

So It would be cool to see arist and track title.

But my major problem is the use of remote control.
I want to use an MCE Remote (not the ImonPAd) , but some touch (not every) are not "recognised" or mapped by the Imon manager (I have the following message on VFD : "Command not Defined" . For example the Red, Blue Green and Yellow touch.

Do you know how can I get these commands decoded by JRiver ?
For example I would like togo into Theaterview , Audio directly by presssing the red button ?

Help is needed .. thanks

Hi Facel,
I do not use any remote, so I can't help out there.
I only did a bit of work getting the Imon VFD up and running through a Mediacenter Plugin.
The plugin in MC:

The VFD:

The plugin:

small and nasty addition:
I just realized that you have IMON.exe set up and running in order to make the plugin work. Otherwise it will crash.
I must admit, I don't like this very much :'(

I have a Moneual MonCaso 320 case with a V L Systems MMX display on it. LCDWriter by babgvant is said to work on this, but does anyone know whether this works with MC?

I don't think it's the same driver as iMon. The software loads as M.Play MX or MMX.exe.

Any help would be grateful.

Do I simply have to unpackt it ito the JRiver plug in folder and run the set up exe file ?

Just unpack anywere and run setup.exe
Only setup.exe is needed, other directories/files contain the source code.

Hello Mike,
I could reproduce your problem by disabling Plug-in Mode in IMON Manager.
Open IMON Manager, select tree item Option / Plug-in Mode. Please enable "Use Display Plug-in Mode".

There's a new version http://www.saupurzel.eu/Setup.exe (http://www.saupurzel.eu/Setup.exe)
- Basic Scrolling functionality built in, enable it on the plug-in screen
- a bit better error handling, errors are reported on the plug-in screen

Hi Mike,
please try out displaytest.exe in your \soundgraph\imon directory. Does it work?

Michael,

I installed the new version:
Sorry, I don't have a 'displaytest.exe' anywhere...  Was the new setup.exe supposed to create it?
I no longer get a crash box, but instead the plugin screen reports: 'Object reference not set to an instance of an object'

Thanks for your continuing help  :)

Hi Mike,
I was pretty sure that DISPLAYTEST.EXE comes with the IMON software and should be found in ...\SOUNDGRAPH\IMON

Anyway, it comes with the Soundgraph Software API http://www.soundgraph.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7375 (http://www.soundgraph.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7375)

Download ZIP file. In there, in directory \API, you will find displaytest.exe. Extract to  ...J River\Media Center 16\Plugins\IMON VFD and run it from there by double clicking it.

Thanks Michael.

I downloaded API zip and Displaytest.exe works fine - no errors, displays test message on vfd as expected

MC still gets the same error - have rebooted, re-installed imon, etc, no luck.

Are you using v8.x of Mon (which came out recently) or v7.xxx ?

iMon itself seems to work fine - displays the time/date mostly.

My pc:
   i5/2500
   Asus p67-M m/b
   Windows 7x64sp1
   JR MC 16.0.72

Thanks for your help!

Hello Michael,
thank you for this great plug-in, I've been looking for such a plug-in for months! It works great.

Do you think it is possible to display the selected directory so one can navigate among folders just with the LCD? I want to try to include it in your plug-in but I'm not sure it's possible to get this info from MC.

Thank you,

Blaze

Hello Blaze,
what I could add, though I don't know wether it's what you want/need, is the possibilty to display any library field .
There's a function string Get(string strField, boolean bFormatted) which should do this.
But keep in mind the plug-in reacts on track changes only! And that's not what you want, I guess.
I don't see any other event, which would track menu changes.

Hi Michael,
thank you for your reply. That would be a good start to can display any library fields. As the filename contains the path of the file as well, it would help to navigate with the LCD display. I have no better idea as MC doesn't seem to send any info while just navigating among folders.

If you can add the possibility to display the filename easily it would be great. Otherwise I will try to do it by myself but I guess I will need lots of time to understand your sourcecode well...

Regards, Blaze

First, thank you for the effort!
Second, when I go to the plugin manager of the JMC ver. 16, I don't see any configuration options for the plugin, merely plugin information. how do I get the nice first-line/second-line setup (and scrolling?)

Hi Shmulik,
you must go to the "Services & Plug-ins" list and click on "IMON VFD". Then you can see all options.

Good luck!

Hello Michael,

First of all, thank you for your great plugin!

Just a suggestion: it would be very great to add the possibility to combine more than one data field in the same line  :)

Ex.: Line 1:  Title + " - " + Artist + " - " + Album
      Line 2:  Bitrate + " - " + Bitdepth + " - " + Samplerate

- on line two you can display a progressbar. Unfortunatley the character set does not allow a better layout

and what I will definitely have to change is scrolling. It get's on my nerves that it doesn't wrap around properly and instead starts from the beginning once it hits the end. But hey,  Rome wasn't built in a day.

Hello Michael,

Thank you for this new version, great work!

Can I suggest some future improvements?  ;)
- Possibility to choose the order of data fields in each line
- Addition of the following data fields: Disc, Elapsed time, Bitdepth, Samplerate
- Possibility to choose the field separator character

The top of the top would be to have the possibility to choose what we want to display in each line by using a string like this (like in J River where you can customize the two lines on the top of the screen...)   ;) ;):

Disc [Disc #] - Track [PN Position] of [PN Tracks]  -  [Elapsed Time] // [Total Time]  (Audio properties: [Bitrate (labeled)] - [Bit Depth] Bit - [Sample Rate] kHz)

But any way, thank you for your effort!!!

Didier

Hello Michael,

Starting from the plugin you have written, I have made some enhancements (scrolling, display of more info, etc). If you give me an email address where I can send you the source code, I'll send it you. Please, can you try it and feedback? Thank you!

I'm not a VB .Net expert... so it is certainly possible that the code can be enhanced! Also, I don't know how to create a new setup.exe...

Best regards,

Didier

Hi Didier,
that's great. You can send to mib___ATfreenet.de.
But unfortunately my PC caught fire. No joke! The cables to the power supply got destroyed. The new power supply has no possibility to connect the VFD. I'll have to be a bit inventive to get this going again.

But nevertheless I can create a setup.exe and put it on my server for others to download.

First of all: THANKS ->To Both of you.

Scrolling is fine now,...but...

Now there is too much Info on the Screen for me.
A mix of both Versions would be nice.

-Selectable Tag's too show from Michael's Version.
-And scrolling style from your Version.

But nevertheless thanks for your work, but i think i will jump back to michael's Version.

Scrolling is better in the new version, it looks very nice.  How do you control what information is displayed?  The only options I see are for scrolling speed and an "alternate scrolling" checkbox.

THANKS, Michael and Didier!

Exactly what I wanted!
One Question:
What's the "Position" Checkbox for?
I Checked it,but I got a Framework error,when starting.
Checked again,Second Line shows no more tags anymore, only this -> ===>
Nothing else.Option disabled->Second line working again. ?

PS:
Perhaps a few more tags would be nice.
(Technical Info's->Like Filetype,Bitrate,khz,Resolution)
Or an option to add our own tags (Dropdown Menu).
Something like this.
Until now,I'm happy with this Version.
But no hurry, take your time and have a good Christmas time and a happy New Year!

Many Thanks for this plugin.I am going to test it.

As this thread title is VFD support, its main subject is rather related to control the Display of the VFD.
I would like to come back on 2nd part of VFD support which is the use of remote control with  VFD (May be it could be worth to create a new thread for that topic)

On last June, Soundgraph released an iMON Remote Control API    http://www.soundgraph.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9829 (http://www.soundgraph.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9829)
It will be definitivly great if someone made possible with this API the full control of JRiver via the Tools -> Options -> remote control -> Commands   panel.
Today, even if the soundgraph VFD Supports MCE remote control, it is really a pain to get the action you want buy pushing the button of your choice.
For example in order to get the "theater View Home" by pressing the blue button on MCE remote, the only solution I have founded was to use evengost in order to assign a CMD command to a keystroke  combination (ex: Shift+Ctrl+F1) and then to assign this combination in the Imon manager to the Green Button of the remote ...

So my wish for the new year comming would be to have a nice and complete implementation of MCE and Imon remote into J River  (I hope that Jim and his team has got my message loud and clear !!)

Thanks!

You're thinking in the wrong way.Start from the other side.
A great Feature of Imon is to integrate nearly every Application in it's System.
I use Imon Remote and it works flawlessly.Just start Media Center and then go to Imon options.
Add a new Application (Scan) and select Media Center.(Application Settings)
Now you can add keyboard shortcuts the way you like it.
Just like->MCE Button starts JRiver media Center in Theater View for me as example and so on,...
I know you have to play around for a while, but afterwards it runs great!
And you have to set it up only once. You can make a Backup of the settings or copy them to a new JRiver
Media Center Version.Because Keyboard shortcuts are always the same in JRiver!
Now I can even handle Zones and Library's with Imon Remote!
For me it is the best Remote I've ever had, because it has also a good Mouse/Keyboard Function! ;)
It is the mix of both worlds (Imon & JRiver) that is great for me.It doesn't work perfect "out-of-the-box",but on the other side you can configure it until it is nearly perfect for your needs.

Oh,and here is a Link of JRiver's Keyboard Shortcuts:   (Could be useful. ;D)
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Keyboard_Hot-keys (http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Keyboard_Hot-keys)

@mib4755

I've tried your latest Version,no .NET Error anymore, but second Display Line shows only "========>" and
no tags anymore when "Position" is activated. What's this Option for?

Best Regards
Stuckmojo
Title: Re: Any VFD Support
Post by: mib4755 on December 30, 2011, 03:23:34 pm
In the latest version it should read "progress bar" instead of "position".
I guess, this explains it a bit better ;-)
Title: Re: Any VFD Support
Post by: StuckMojo on December 30, 2011, 04:01:16 pm
Nope,Just looked.

The same as before->Position.
Don't worry. Now I know for what it is for. ::)
The arrow at the end of the line is changing to an"=" instead of going one step further.Next step the
arrow comes back again. And so on.
Example: ==>, ===, ===>, ====, ====>, =====, =====>,...and so on.
Bug?
Would "--->" look better than "===>"? Screen looks a littlebit overloaded with"=============>".
Or perhaps a simple Line: ___________________
Because main attention should be on the first Line (Tags).
What do you think?

Best Regards
Stuckmojo

PS:
Any Chance of adding some technical (Filetype,Bitrate,Audio,Khz,....and a few more) tags to select in the Future.Would be nice.

I'd kinda like to see a running clock display in addition to/instead of the progress bar... I think the iMon software does this for natively-supported applications.  I know I've seen it, but can't remember where for sure.

BTW, something I've been meaning to mention... on my system, the VFD info changes before the track actually changes.  It looks like it's early by the amount of time set in MC's prebuffering setting, which is 6 seconds in my case.
Title: Re: Any VFD Support

Progress bar removed. Replaced by time display.
Sample rate added, bite rate and file type was there already.

The time display is nice.  Regarding the early change problem, it definitely is related to the prebuffering setting.  Changing this setting also changes the time by which the VFD information changes early.  Incidentally, the new time display disappears during this interval.  The other info changes to the next track, then the time reappears when the track actually starts playing.

@Stuckmojo

=> I have very quickly tested the Imon Remote but I remember to have the same judgment as yours (despite not beeing a Remote control expert)

=> Unfortunatly I could not  "start from the other side"  because my philisophy is to use one remote for all my devices (TV, SatBox, and JRiver media center)
I use a B&O remote for every thing and I have a Lintronic Infra red converter capable to send and receive any Infra red signals .... except the Imon one (Too baaad).

The Imon infra red signal timing seems to be too difficult to reproduce for the Lintronic designers.

That is the reason why I use The IMon VFD in the MCE remote mode, and the only solution founded was through evengohst.
So if someone can implement something else for remote with the API it would be great for me.

However, I changed the program, so that you should get another error message now, which will print out the the procedure name where the error occurred.

I have a Luxa2 LM300 PRO with the IMON UltraBay; looks close to the picture below

Hi, I have added a request to the VFD Chat,

I had your app loaded and it was looking good MC software screen, but nothing on my IMON VFD in the LUXA2 LM300 PRO case.

IMOM manager has a lot of settings, which should be used?
I get some error lines in the APP Screen but they are in Dutch language as I am living in the Netherlands, could it help if I send you the messages?

Thanks in advance for your support.

I deactivated (delete) iMonVFD.Switching Librarys works normal.
So the error comes from the Plugin.

Ohh...and sometimes (not often) using Second Library for a while and go back to Main library.(Crash)....BUT
then i can't even start MC anymore.Random Crashes! I have to delete the iMonVFD Folder in Plugins.
Start MC,switching back to Main library,Copy the iMonVFD Folder back to Plugins Directory,Restart MC.

iMonVFD works again.
Seems to be a .NET Framework Problem.
I'm using the latest version and all available Updates are installed.

PLEASE mib4755 can you take a look at it again?!?

Thanks for the plugin. I have just installed it but am having some problems getting it up and running.

The VFD representation in the plugin window is showing the information I want, but the physical VFD display on my case is blank (or actually it has 2 horizontal lines – one in top and one in the bottom of the display).

When I open the plugin window it – just below the Scroll Speed setting and the update button – says:

Code: [Select]
wrapperAPI_StateChanged
Object reference not set to an instance of an object

If I check the Enable Scrolling box it says:

Code: [Select]
Sub timScrolling
Object reference not set to an instance of an object

And after I press the Update button I changes to:

Code: [Select]
Sub Disply()
Object reference not set to an instance of an object

Display Plug-in Mode in IMON Manager is enabled.

Any help would be greatly be appreciated.

I am running win 7 64bit

Just to elaborate on my previous post, I use Windows 7 32-bit. Hence the problem is present regardless of whether you use 32 - or 64-bit Windows ?

I'm also running win7 64 bits.  With displaytest.exe all runs fine... so the problem must be on the plug-in side

I think we can consider this plug in broken, dead and no longer in development. Does anyone know of any alternatives?

I must agree. The Plugin is working fine,if it works. But it still has a few Bugs.

I'm running Win7 x64 and it is working fine.
I've only one problem:

I've 2 Libraries.Switching between them doesn't work with AnyVfd->MC Crash.
Described some posts above.

Has anyone heard something about mib4755? Would be nice if he could take a look at the plugin again. Please!

I'm just starting on building a small, quiet PC just for MC, in an Origen M10 case, so I'm hoping to get this VFD plug-in running.
Title: Re: Any VFD Support
Post by: StuckMojo on September 05, 2012, 08:49:04 am
For me,it's running good.

1.
As I postet,if you want to create two different libraries, you will get problems->MC crashes.
When switching from library A to library B for example.

2.In rare cases,MC crashes because of Any VFD.Then you have to delete/move the Any VFD Plugin Folder completely.
   Otherwise MC 17 won't start anymore.(Starting,running for 10 Seconds->crashing again)

After deleting/moving Folder:
-Start MC 17 again->Popup->Can't find Any VFD.
-Play at least one Song/Movie for a few Seconds.Close MC 17.
-Install/Copy back the AnyVFD Plugin Folder.Start MC 17 again.
-Should be working again.Control AnyVFD Settings.

I think this two bugs come from how things are displayed in VFD.(Perhaps timing Problems.)
Because the second Bug,only happens when switching to another file.
After the first crash and starting again, the display shows completely nonsense for 10 Seconds and MC 17 crashes again.

Using the latest Plugin Version.

Sorry for not noticing your busy discussions. Jim informed me, so here I am.
But sadly I have to say, I will not be of much help.
I do not own a VFD anymore, so I cannot do any programming, testing debugging etc.
Someone else with a bit of Visual Basic knowlegde AND a VFD could go on with the development.

Yet another success story!

Bach Media VB8000BNS case with the iMon VFD. Thing's been nothing but a glorified digital clock since installing Media Center. Running XP MCE 2005 with all the available service packs and patches.

Had to do some tweaks:

Ran the plugin setup and it crashed out trying to register the DLLs. Did some digging and found out I was a couple versions old on the .Net Framework. You need v4 ... At this point, I could see the iMon plugin listed in MC, but all MC did was list the programmer and contact information. Huh.  ?

- Went to install .Net Framework v4.  In order to do that, I had to also update the windows installer and a couple other programs. Basically kept restarting the setup for .Net Framework until it stopped giving me error messages and did it's thing.

- Ran MC and now I got the iMon plugin listed in the Plugin Manager WITH the setup screen that allows you to configure the display. However ... error messages that the display wasn't initialized. Drat.

- Downloaded and ran DisplayTest.EXE as suggested and yup ... that couldn't find the display either. Double drat.

- Installed the latest version (8.12.1202) of the iMon Manager. I was on 7.9 something or other and that didn't even have a "plug in mode" to enable. Did that in the new version, ran DisplayTest.exe again, and eureka, tada, wahoo and all that. Fired up MC and played around with the display settings some and everything's working now. Wouldn't mind having a bit more control over scrolling speed, but that's just nit-picking.

Only complaint right now is the display seems a bit tired. Had some dimming here and there as a lot of pixels hadn't been used for a while when it was only a glorified digital clock. I've set both display lines to scroll text for now and the exercise seems to be helping. They all do light, so I'll let it go for a while and keep my fingers crossed that those dim pixels perk up.

Anyway. YES ... the latest exe download for the plugin DOES work and installs to the MC 17 directory seamlessly once you're up to date on everything else in an XP environment. BUT ... the zipped version apparently wasn't updated and is still trying to install to the MC 16 directory. You can change the install directory in the setup that comes with the zipped version, but not sure if you'd get the same results. I didn't test that myself as I didn't want to break anything.

PS ... this might actually save me about $150. I'm researching a new HTPC and was thinking about replacing the Bach Media case w/glorified digital clock with a Lian Li. Now that the VFD is working again, I'm having second thoughts. Who do I send the money to? <G>

I know I posted a lot of this before, but maybe this one is a bit more organized ...

Here's a step by step I just did on a new HTPC build. May help point those who can't get it to work in the right direction.

- Did a fresh installation of Windows XP Pro w/SP3 (so shoot me ... I like it!) <G>
- Installed the current version of JRiver MC17 and imported the library and settings from my old machine. Real slick - wondered how well that would work, but it fired right up and it's just like it was.
- Installed Imon Manager v8.12.12.02 - MAKE SURE YOU ENABLE DISPLAY PLUGIN MODE! You'll find that in the main "options" ... at this point, the IMON frontend should be talking to the display. News, weather ... all that stuff.

Here's where it gets tricky. The IMON VFD install will hang trying to register the program files if you're not running the correct version of .NET Framework. You need to verify that the following directory exists on your hard drive:

WINDOWS\MICROSOFT.NET\FRAMEWORK\V4.0.30319

The setup will NOT work without it. Interestingly enough, IMON VFD installs itself in an MC16 directory. Some legacy issues I expect, as that was probably the current iteration of MC when the plugin was last updated. I never used MC16 myself, so I assUme the VFD plugin creates the MC16 directory by default, and apparently MC17 (and hopefully any other version, including MC18) looks for it there. Here's where you'll find it after the installation:

Program Files\J River\Media Center 16\Plugins\Imon VFD

To verify the installation worked, add DISPLAYTEST.EXE to that directory, and fire it up. If all is good, you should be able to send data to the display.

Last step is to start MC, scroll to the plugins section, click the IMON VFD, and you should get to the setup screen. If you don't see a couple of windows with click 'n pick options, something went wrong. I've got mine scrolling Album, Title, Artist, and date on the top line at 200ms and the time display on the bottom ... try it ... you'll like it!

The VFD program is very picky about versions, so I stashed the IMON VFD setup version I used and  DISPLAYTEST.EXE (from Imon) at the following location:

http://www.brainfartz.com/images/index.php?loc=./Stereo%20Stuff/htpc/mc-stuff

You can get Framework 4 here:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=17851

They're still showing the 0319 build you need as current, but if that changes, I also saved a copy of the correct web install file in the same location as the other stuff. MS is pretty good about keeping older versions available, so if a direct download from MS doesn't give you what you need, that should work as a fallback.

Luck with it. Let me know if this helps anyone. I'd also be interested to know if anyone has got it working with MC18 ...

Answer:
Running MC 18.0.67.Any VFD Plugin is working like it did in MC17.

Would be nice if someone could eliminate the two Bugs of Any VFD.
1.Changing Library ->Crash
2.Random MC crashes when changing a Movie or Song.(But this happens only in rare cases).

@EdBrady
This would be very nice if MC Team would develop a plugin.
Or they have a look at this Plugin and fix the bugs it still has.

Answer:

Thanx ... good to know. I'll be looking at an upgrade.

If it helps any, I have never ever had an MC crash before or after installing the VFD plugin. IF there's any instability, I'd attribute it to the IMON software, which from my experience is either

<A> Buggy as hell
<B> Real particular about it's environment
<C> A work in progress
<D> All of the above

From my experience, IMON up thru about 7.9 something or other had ... to put it nicely ... issues. The  v8.12.12.02 has been rock stable (ya, I know ... famous last words). In fact, it's the first version that I've been able to get all the other stuff (news, weather, tickers) to work properly. Not sure if it's hardware related - I did do a new HTPC build recently - but I'm just happy it's all working.

All except that cute lil EQ display - that's NEVER worked for me. Not that I'm losing any sleep over it. I got it's big brother lighting up the room on my BSR 14/14XR equalizer ...

First of all, a BIG thank you for creating and sharing your work.
I've tried it now.
2 Problems: One Addition and a Bug.

1.Would be nice if we could have more options for the second line.
I always used the Year Tag in the second line for example.

2.Plugin installed and MC 18 started, interferences the whole Windows system.Curser movement in MC 18 Theater View is really slow now.Opened imon settings, mouse movement is stuttering and left click reacts also really slow now.
CPU Usage is at normal level.I don't know what causes this problem.

My System Win 7 x64, latest updates installed.
I had to uninstall it ,now the system works normal again.

Nevertheless, thanks again for your work.Good to see, there is a person again here, who can handle imon plugin programming.

I will look at the polling interval for display updates - it is around 100ms. Maybe some of the Automation interface calls are too CPU intensive to be queried this often.

Hi,Dean70

I've tested your new Version.

The problem is still there. It is a serious thing. I think it has nothing to do with cpu load.Because it stays normal.
Without the plugin it is at the same level.
If i want to scroll down in theater view,it goes down one line and then stops.
If i try to open imon settings, the window appears. When try to select one of the settings, i have to wait 10 seconds until the mouse click reacts.CPU Load stays at normal level. ?
Its seems that only mouse and keyboard are responding very slow.

Two other things,if you don't bother:

1.In the plugin settings window i can't read the scrolling ms seconds.I can only see the last digit. The text before goes over the ms field.

2.If you don't mind, can you please remove the word "released" from the Year tag.
I always liked that the top line scrolled, and the second line not.Now the 2 second line also scrolls, because the text is to long. Two lines scrolling looks some kind of weird.
Would be nice.

And thanks for the additions for the second line! :)

That's odd - what are the h/w specs of system are you running? Also check the version of dotNet (it requires v4 to run) - confirm the latest dotNet updates are installed. The other thing to check is the version of the iMon software you are running - I have tested it on v8.12.1202.

I run this version on an i5 2500k (development system) and the HTPC AMD A8-3850k, which has the VFD display and don't have the lag issues.

Win 7 x64
.NET V4 + latest Updates       ->installed.
iMon Software v8.12.1202      ->installed (Plugin-Mode -> Both activated)

H/W Specs:
CPU: AMD Athlon II X4 605e 4x 2,3Ghz
Ram: 8Gb DDR3 Ram 1333 Mhz
GPU: Ati Radeon 6950           ->Latest Driver installed

I have set up my System not long ago.Only necessary Software installed. +Kaspersky Internet Security
The only 2 things that are also running in the background:
Iconoid ->To Hide Mouse Cursor in Windows.
Video Wallpaper 2.50  ->I have Video Files as Background, not pictures.

The old AnyVFD Plugin from mib4755 had no problem with this setup."Only" MC Crash Problems, when i tried to switch between librarys in MC.

It's gettin' more strange....
-First i deactivated Kaspersky    ->No Change
-If i use VNC (Remote Desktop) to control MC 18.Everything works normal, until i try it with the iMon Remote.
Then the keyboard and mouse responds late or not.Clicked in the MC Window with VNC,keyboard and mouse responds normal again. But not with the remote.
And the complete Taskbar is locked or responds very late if try to click on it.With both, VNC and iMon Remote.
Closing MC 18->Taskbar works normal again. With VNC or with Remote.
-Uninstalled the Plugin->Everythings Ok again. ?

I will look at optimizing the refresh timer routine further - some of the displayed info doesn't require refreshing until a track change. The original version only had the duration updating via the refresh timer - the current version has duration, zone (no event available for zone change), clock, volume, etc in combination with other fields.
Title: Re: Any VFD Support
Post by: dean70 on January 12, 2013, 01:12:14 am
Updated install (http://www.mediafire.com/?umcutiluaapebgb)

Polls zone info only once every second & reduces the update interval for the clock to 0.5 secs, instead of 100ms.
Removed the word 'released' from the year tag. Also renamed Last Played to 'Played'.
Rearranged the scroll interval field.
Each line can have the scrolling disabled individually.

You also need to check under C:\Program Files (x86)\J River\Media Center 18\Plugins\ImonVFD for any files before installing the updated version and delete them. The setup.exe wasn't always removing files correctly on uninstall.

Perfect dean70,now it works flawlessy!!!
Problem gone!

Bad,that i've no second library anymore, because of crashing issues with the old plugin.
I think i have to set it up again.Hopefully the crashs are gone now.
A really BIG THANK YOU to you. After 3 Years it works like it should. :)

The only things i miss now: (But are not really important,Only if you have time for it)

-Tags to show for TV Shows. (Series,Season,Episode)
-Do you like the delimiter icon? A simple - would look a bit smoother. What do you think?

Not really important:
-Displayed Info not showing up,when nothing played.Played Audio, stopped, but display didn't change.
I couldn't reproduce it,happened only once, until now.Seems that this is really not important.
-Sometimes the Plugin settings disappear.Setting one thing, switched to playing now(Playing a movie),back again to settings->Settings gone.My suspicion is,that this comes from the Windows Aero Theme in combination with Black on Black Skin from MC.Restarting MC,settings there again.

That's all.Of course, only if you like the modification too,and if you have time for this.
I also like the displayed informations, when nothing is playing.Great! (Zone,Time,Volume Level)

To everyone who used the old plugin->try THIS one. It's really good!

Thanks for the kind words. I got tired of staring at the default iMon clock & couldn't let the VFD go to waste, so decided to do something about the plugin.

I will look at the series/season/episode fields had not considered that. TV is a little tricky - many of the fields are blank. If there is a blank field on a line you get an empty line - maybe this could be changed to n/a?

The field separator can be changed to a user specified value - I was not too keen on ! my original was a circle (extended ASCII character), but imon vfd barfs at that. You can only use standard ASCII chars.

hold the press: Looks like there is a way to show different fields based on Media Type/Media Sub Type, rather than a simple Video/Non video setting - I am investigating revamping the plugin to handle multiple media type info display.

Any support for the VFD that comes with the Moncaso 320 case.

I have found that this occurs every time you update MC. It creates a new config folder for each release under <Profile>\AppData\Local\J River\v18.0.nnn which contains the VFD plugin config file. Not sure why it does this. The plugin creates a new config file based on the defaults each time.

John

Doing a quick search & this seems to have a VFD from a different vendor. Do they have an SDK?

I took a look at the Path.On my Machine the path is a little different.
<Profile>\AppData\Local\JRiver,_Inc\DefaultDomain_Path_jmdogwy30kcgwje4ohnhp0nczgxfc5eb\v18.0.nnn
The config file in the folder is from the iMon Plugin.
I deleted all of them, except the latest one.

Started MC 18,went to plugins->IMON VFD settings->OK.
Clicked on Playing Now and then back to IMON VFD settings->Settings gone.
This happens all the time, not only after an update.
Did you try it with my settings?
-Win 7 x64
-Aero Theme enabled
-MC Black on Black Skin (With this Skin, Aero needs to be enabled.Message pops up if Aero isn't enabled.)
But as i said before,not really a bad thing.I don't change the settings each time,when i use MC 18.

Edit:
As I said.Tried it with the "old" Thunderstorm "Non-Aero" Skin.Switching between Playing Now and IMON Plugin settings works without problems.

The other thing happened, too now.The second time. But the other way round.Started a movie and the display didn't change from "Nothing Playing Informations" to "Movie playing informations".Could it be,that this is a refresh timer problem again? But,again, not really a big problem. This happens only in rare cases.

dean70, is your new plugin supposed to work with MC17?  I've installed it, but MC17 is unaware of its presence... I assume it should show up the same place the old did, under services & plugins.
Title: Re: Any VFD Support
Post by: StuckMojo on January 15, 2013, 08:26:05 am
Did you set the install path manually? (Custom not Automatic Install)
The Standard Install Path is the MC 18 directory,i think.
Title: Re: Any VFD Support
Post by: dean70 on January 15, 2013, 03:58:14 pm
At the moment, the setup is hard-coded to install in MC18 only. You should be able to add it manually in MC17 from the Services & Plugins screen.

I will have to update the setup to detect the highest installed MC version.

Title: Re: Any VFD Support
Post by: EdBrady on January 16, 2013, 11:33:07 pm
I tried adding it manually... MC wants a dll, I tried both ImonVFD.dll and iMONDisplay.dll and both resulted in "Failed to install plugin."
Title: Re: Any VFD Support
Post by: dean70 on January 18, 2013, 01:30:20 am
I have updated the install (http://www.mediafire.com/?umcutiluaapebgb) which detects the latest version of MC (18 or 17) and installs the IMon plugin for that version.
Title: Re: Any VFD Support
Post by: StuckMojo on January 18, 2013, 09:15:57 am
Now that i have installed MC 17 and MC 18,it won't install in MC 18 Plugins Directory, even if i set the Install path manually (custom) to MC 18 Plugins directory.
Both settings (complete / Custom ->changed to MC 18 Plugins) don't work. Both settings ->install in MC 17 Plugins directory.
I moved the iMon Folder to MC 18 directory manually. The display didn't jump to Movie Informations,as i started a movie.Still displayed Zone/Time/Volume db.

Jumped back to last Version.Working again.

Fixed install (http://www.mediafire.com/?umcutiluaapebgb) so that it detects v18 and v17 (not v18 or v17). Tested it with both v18 and v17 installed (actually appears in both). Installs to Media Center 18 folder in this case.

It should work with win 7 just with a double click, like a normal setup.exe.

-Windows Updates installed.
-.NET v4 Framework + latest Updates installed.->Needs to be installed for AnyVFD Plugin.

You could try to install MSI Windows Installer manually, and then try to install .msi file:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8483 (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8483)

But it should work Out-of-the-Box with Windows 7.

Try this:

You could try to install MSI Windows Installer manually, and then try to install .msi file:

And,check your file allocations in Windows 7.Perhaps there is something wrong.

This is the correct link. You just run the .msi and should kick off the install. If you have Windows 7 it should have Windows Installer (.msi) enabled by default. Windows Installer has been available since Windows 2000.

well ive spent literally days trying to implement my vfd with jriver when i purchased my case (4 years ago, via posts here, and imon) no go. and ive now spent at least 6 hours the last 2 days trying to get this 446kb .msi file to be an installer and not a word doc. i give up. it's not worth my time. i have now tried all pc's in the house 11 of the 12 pc's all show as doc. all of them install proggies with no issue. ive never ran across a .msi file. so unsure if .msi has ever worked. but from the amount of pc's i have and all of them showing as a doc, and all running flawlessly im not about to mess up my registry and or download 50 items from microsoft install/uninstall etc.

looked promising though. thanks for your efforts.

Start menu, type cmd in the search box, press enter, type "msiexec /i " (without the quotes & include space at end), then drag the .msi file you saved on the desktop into the black cmd window & it will compete the command. Press enter to run it.

Install the old version from mib4755 + Edited files from Sunfire7 for iMonLCD Version.

mib4755 AnyVFD Version:
http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=63181.msg503646#msg503646 (http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=63181.msg503646#msg503646)
Source Code and Install included.

Sunfire7 edited files:
http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=63181.msg503891#msg503891

-Uninstall the Plugin from dean70.Look in the Plugin Folder,to be sure that all files are really gone.
-Then install mib4755 Version of AnyVFD Plugin.It is a normal Setup.exe. ;D
-After that copy/overwrite over the edited files from Sunfire7 for iMonLCD in the Plugin Folder.
-Then it should work with the LCD Version.

for the 1st time since i bought this case. i have jriver on LCD screen :) so happy, what an improvement!

it is very buggy on my system. scrolling locked up after install and then after reboot everytime jriver is running i get an exception error making jriver unusable. (if i chose continue, or X it just keeps popping up. only way to get rid of it is to uninstall, or click fast on dialog until jriver crashes)
error details
Unhandled exception has occurred in a component in your application. If you click continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue.

That is a little problem with the old plugin. It's a little buggy.
This crash i know myself, but it should happen only in rare cases, not all the time.
You don't need to uninstall it,when it happens.Kill MC with Task Manager,Move iMon VFD Plugin out of the Plugin Folder.
Restart MC.Message pops up "Can't find iMon VFD,....".Ignore.Play at least one different file for a few seconds.(Not the last one, when mc crashed)Exit MC.
Copy iMon VFD Folder back to Plugins.Start MC again.

Bad for you that mib4755 stopped developing the plugin.Perhaps you could ask sunfire7, if he could edit the files from dean70's plugin for LCD Version. But he needs the Source Files from dean70,i think.

Just to regurgitate a couple salient points ...

I also had the DOC issue with the windows installer download. Easy enough fix ... just edit the file name and remove the .DOC and it automagically becomes an MSI file. From there, it all went seamlessly. Not sure why the .DOC is added - I suspect some overzealous firewall trying to protect us all from disaster. As common as the problem seems to be, I expect it's at the download server.

Also, in my case anyway, the VFD plugin didn't show up in the SERVICES & PLUGINS list in MC. I had to manually tag it to SHOW from OPTIONS/SERVICES/MANAGE INTERFACE PLUGINS ... once it shows in the plug in list, click it and have fun. I put all the tag info in the first line (hold down CTRL while selecting tags) with scroll set to 300, and check time display for elapsed time in the second line. Pretty slick.

And worth repeating. I went thru a few different versions of the IMON Manager and finally got it to work consistently using v8.12.1202 with PlugIn mode checked under OPTIONS.

Hope that helps ...

I have an idea!

Dean, now that you integrate display views for different media-subtypes,is it possible to add a feature, that activates/deactivates the plugin for a specific media-subtype?
Starting an audio file, for example, should deactivate AnyVFD ,to use the iMon Manager Equalizer for music.
Starting a Video/TV Show activates the plugin again.
And the ability to select media-subtype where the plugin should get activated/deactivated.
When nothing is playing,Informations should stay alive, like it is now.

Or is it possible to loopthrough the equalizer display from iMon to AnyVFD with the selected media-subtype?
Or implement MC Equalizer in AnyVFD.Would be better, because all audio modes would work, not only direct sound.

If something like this could be possible, this would be GREAT!!!

It is something I could look into. If you release the iMon COM interface, the iMon display falls back to Auto mode, which can be set to show the equalizer.

You want eq display, hard to beat G-Force or Aeon ...

(Don't mind me - just getting my post count up) <G>

It does seem like a lot of grief in some cases to get two lines scrolling ... then again, some of the displays come in nice boxes ... here's mine ...

After what I put out for the case, I wasn't about to settle for a 30 pound digital clock.

Thanks for posting your sources Dean.  Well, I'm not able to modify it at the moment because I don't have enough space on the windows partition of my server to install Visual Studio, Any of you knows a free way to expand/change the size of my partition?? I tried the built-in windows disc administrator and acronis disk director without success..

Try GParted.It's Freeware.

And has a Live CD/USB Version,too.

Or try Discpart with CMD.Built-in Windows Disc-Part is also a powerful tool,if you use it with Command Line parameters.

Now i have to wait for Sunfire, too.Just set up my new HTPC with LianLi Case and a new Soundgraph Ultra Bay.Just to see, that this Display is......LCD. >:(

In the meanwhile i use mib4755's version + Sunfire7 files, but dean's version is simply better and "crashfree".

Edit:
I don't like the LCD version of the imon display.I think i put ImonVFD back in the LianLi Case.
Display not readable,if you have the wrong perspective. If you stand too close infront of the display, for example.
Bad backlight,only "one line display".................

Ah, progress! Ain't it grand?

I've got the VFD in my Thermaltake Bach Media case and it's very readable. Only thing I noticed ... it was "broken" for a long time before I figured out how to control it from MC, showing only the standard date and time display. These things apparently have a "memory" issue, because the VFD display wasn't evenly lit once I got it scrolling media info. Once it got a bit of exercise, things evened out and it looks great now, even after it's been doing the static clock thing for a couple days when the computer is shut down.

Sorry for the delay. Got caught up with work, Heartbleed, and some other side projects. Here's what I have so far. It's written in C#. You'll need .NET 4.0 and the iMon Manager running (plugin mode enabled) for this to work. It's pretty basic and non-configurable, but it makes use of just about everything on the display except for the EQ bars.

Per request, here is an update that limits the amount of scrolling on the display. Only long file names get scrolled now instead of constant scrolling for everything. The scrolling can be configured to be constant or a single time for long file names.

Edit the iMonDisplayPlugin.ini to configure the behavior. Use "Once" for the single scroll feature.

Thanks So Much Millst for working on this!

On our htpc machine (we always have it in theaterview)...while in stopped mode in jriver, the imon is displaying Volume 100
it seems like it's not grabbing the default imon display text while in stopped mode. Without the imon plugin installed the display shows the clock, weather, and daily news feeds, (the items we have selected in imon manager frontview) but once installed those don't show up, only the volume 100

Once we chose a file to play it scrolls through once, and stops, showing the full title..that works and looks great!
thanks!

Yes, the iMon Manager app is displaying that information. When the plugin takes control, that app no longer has control of the display. Only one piece of software is allowed to control the display at a time. I could probably have a clock instead of the volume, but I'm not interested in replicating all the options that the iMon app provides.

Any further developments planned for the IMON VFD Plugin? I love it! I really wish there was a way to add EQ visualizer to the plugin, it is my favorite feature, but I am sure it is probably quite difficult to code. Maybe there is a way to display the spectrum analyzer that is shown in MC20's Display Bar on a IMON VFD Display. Is there some way you can use that code and incorporate it somehow to the IMON VFD Display? That would be super-awesome!

I am not a programer and no nothing about code so I do not know if that would even be possible, and if it is - it may be difficult. But if there was a way, that would be very cool!
Title: Re: Any VFD Support
Post by: millst on January 29, 2015, 09:53:36 am
I did think about doing something with the EQ mode of the display, but I don't know of any API provided by JRiver that provides the necessary information. The DSP studio provides a similar display, but I'd need access to the data behind it.

The only other way that comes to mind immediately is to parse the file myself and update the display based on track position. I doubt that is trivial.

Thank you for the reply millst, I really appreciate you taking the time to respond. I do have to say that I really love your plugin, it is amazing work and I have never had any issues with it! Like I was saying in my last post, I am no programmer or coder so I do not know how difficult it would be to perhaps have the spectrum analyzer show on a IMON VFD display, but as you stated in your post, it is probably difficult. If anyone can find a way to do it, I am sure you can! That would easilly be my favorite feature in your already incredible plugin!

Again, I sincerely appreciate your reply and hope that there is a way to make it happen!

I looked around. I don't see a problem with analyzing the audio and calculating the equalizer display. Worst case, it couldn't be done real-time (run a tool to calculate and write to a separate file). Unfortunately, the MC API only gives track position in seconds. That's not accurate enough to look good. I don't see a satisfactory way to do it without help on the MC API side.

Hi Milist,

Title: Re: Any VFD Support

I will look into this, but can't really give you a time frame right now. There are two factors. First, I have not upgraded to MC21. I may be able to build it without any testing, but that leads to the second problem. My Windows installation had a meltdown this morning. I'm moving to Windows 10 earlier than I wanted to and having to reinstall everything.

I recall the iMon drivers being a real pain to get working on Windows 8. I'm guessing it won't be any easier, if even possible, on Windows 10.

Graphic EQ display is built into the Imon shell that needs to be running for the display to work in MC, no? That said, I go into the Imon settings, and graphic EQ is switched on, but doesn't show on the display. No biggie, as I prefer to see the title/artist/year/time/remaining time scroll that's setup within the MC plugin.

Also, if I remember right (it's been a while) I was able to use the packaged installation for MC17 (or was it 18?) to get it working in 19. It's the EXE package, not the zip. I believe the problem is that the install is hard coded to a default directory, which is whatever version MC was on when the plugin was packaged. It DID install to the older version's directory, and I just moved that plugin folder to the new MC version's plugin folder. Maybe the solution would be to simply allow the user to select their own installation folder when running the setup.

Anyway, works fine in MC19 here anyway, running Windows 8 Pro. The tricky part MAY be setting access options as W8 can be a real PITA due to new security issues when it comes to user rights. Even my ADMIN account makes me jump through hoops to get into the program directories. Seems to be more of a problem with MC though, so maybe that could be tweaked to allow us to get at our folders already!

PS ... once again, if memory serves, I'd already deleted the older MC directory - the plugin setup, recreated a blank MC directory AND the plugin directory during the installation. That got deleted as well after moving the plugin folder to the new version MC.

Looks like I took some good notes on iMon and whatnot when I upgraded to Windows 8. JRiver is up and running for me again. Try this one out. As noted, I can't test myself.

As sKiZo said, you might be able to shuffle the files around and get it working. The path is indeed hard-coded. I haven't made any improvements over the template JRiver provided. Version 1.3 is just hardcoded for MC21. If I build again, I'll look into making it version agnostic.

Depending on what build compiler you use, you might even be able to provide a pick list for all the versions that will work with the plug in ...

(nudge nudge) <G>

My iMon display is set for:

Album  -  Artist  -  Title
(Time Display Enabled)
(Scroll Enabled)

Scroll speed is 300ms. Just right for a lazy glance at the display. Knew I got that fancy case for something!

PS ... Worth noting ... the plug in requires Microsoft .NET 4 (Framework?) to run properly. You do get an error message if you try running it without.

Title: Re: Any VFD Support
Post by: millst on August 21, 2015, 11:04:31 am
It's based on Inno Setup and was part of the template. I know nothing about it and never heard of it until JRiver, which means a bunch of learning to accomplish something simple, unfortunately.

Yes, the plugin is written in C# and requires .NET4. What comes bundled with Windows is a moving target so you'll need to make sure it is installed if it isn't already.

I went through a couple versions before I found the right one. I posted a link up to the correct install ... I think:

(As I said, it's been a while since I got it working here, and the .Net is a one time thing.

http://www.brainfartz.com/images/Stereo%20Stuff/htpc/mc-stuff/dotNetFx40_Client_setup.exe

That SHOULD (theoretically) download the correct .NET package to your computer.

hi millst, thank you for your reply and for continuing to help me. I am also using windows 10. There were no errors during install but during setup I get an error message shown below:

I believe the iMon Manager is running but all I can see is a blank screen in JRiver MC21.

Here are some more pics to try to give you an idea of what I am experiencing. When I installed your executable file, it certainly appeared that it installed to the correct directory so I am baffled as to why it does not work.

Title: Re: Any VFD Support
Post by: millst on January 07, 2016, 12:32:33 pm
Ensure iMon Manager is running. There is no direct way to control the display, everything gets routed through that software. The display should be functional and displaying whatever random messages the manager usually displays. If the display isn't working before JRiver starts, then it won't work through the plugin. There is also an option in the manager that must be enabled, too. It's called plugin mode or similar.

If that's all working and you're getting the error, can you get a shot of more of the backtrace?

Not sure if you're still required to register the dll in the command window. If so, that should show ADMINISTRATOR at the top. If not, check this out to make it all happen.

Still working perfect here with v19 ... ;-}

Might be an interesting experiment ... try downgrading? I'm sure that's doable (and old versions are available for download). I'd expect the licensing would allow you to install any version up to and including the one you purchased without having to jump through any registration hoops.

PS ... could be your version of iMon too ... I know I went through several before I found one that worked. I'm using 8.12.1202 here. Only thing that doesn't work with my display is the graphic equalizer ... but that never worked anyway. Got mine showing time and track info, which is nice when the visualization is set to full screen.

Yeah, the VFD version kind of sucks :) The LCD version automatically scrolls the text. I'd have to scroll it myself on the VFD.

I can look into enhancements when I get some more time, but it might be slow going as I don't have anything to test with.

So can we also do something to help with this plugin
Title: Re: Any VFD Support

Btw,

we should rename the plugins so that everyone can see for what display which plugin the right one is.

If not its the same how in the old original thread about the plugins, many rising version numbers but every second is in real for another type of display.

There is only one DLL. It supports both the VFD and the LCD display. I have no plans to add more. With no vendor support, it's a pain enough just to keep the one I have working.

Here is an update with scrolling for the VFD. Let me know if it works or not.

Short text is now centered in line, scrolling for long text now works!
Artist and title information are shown in first line, second line is emtpy. Room for the track duration  ;)

While playing around I noticed when I sent the system to standby or hibernate with MC and the plugin active, display is not coming back to life after waking up.
Playing a file then also leaves the display empty. Need to close and reopen MC to have the plugin working again.
It would be nice if that could be fixed, because I never completely shut down my HTPC because of faster boot times.

Seems to work for me when MC starts automatically after a Windows boot (it's my setup). Cannot see that window of helper program popping up and closing anymore and focus seems to be OK.
After resuming out of hibernate state I had the problem of lost focus in Theater View again, first resume after installing Version 15. But I need to check more deeply at the weekend if this may be caused by (or related to) another issue, because the following two times after resuming it was OK...
I will let you know!

Ok, your issue might not be plugin related then. I've had different issues resuming from sleep on mine for as long as I can remember. Sometimes, things work great. Other times, apps get jumbled around to different monitors or positions. Probably issues with Windows and video drivers, but just an annoyance for me since the remote still works.

Anyone else having problems with MC losing focus on resume?

Title: Re: Any VFD Support
Post by: Pistensau on October 20, 2017, 01:21:22 pm
Resuming has worked without problems for me since I build up my rig. I tried to provoke the issue. It seems not to be focus issue why the remote is not responding after resume as I thought earlier.  It looks like the Imon software is not responding for about 20 seconds to any remote commands. I can command with the mouse during that time or wait until it becomes responsive again. I will uninstall the plugin again and see if the behavior persists.

Hello millst,
it shows playing time and total time of the file, this is working fine for me! But scrolling of the title seems to be broken with this build. It is jumping back and forth now.
Formerly when the title was scrolled to the end it started again left aligned then scrolling. Is it possible to have it kind of endless scrolling? I mean when the text scrolls out to the left it will enter again from the right side of the screen. Would make the text even more "in a flow". But this is just a personal taste.
Thanks for the effort!

I think this will fix the scrolling issue. The scrolling behavior could be changed. The current method is based on what the LCD version does.

Latest version 1.10 has fixed the scrolling issue.

For the scrolling behavior it is your decision, I don't know how much work it is. Implement it as a selectable option? This is just fine tuning for a well working plugin now.

First i wanna thank for the help with this display plugin.

Great work.

I have one little issue found in actual version.

If i play an playlist, then the interpret and titel in first line will not change when the next song starts. it takes sometimes nearly the hole song before the display actual this.
The time in second line is changing with the next song, thats ok. But first line Titel and interpret dont change.

When i jump forward to next track or back to restart or track before by skip function, it changes like the second line immediately.

First of all, a big THANK YOU for your great iMon display solution and the not so easy update to 64-bit. If I understand it correctly you managed the MC 64-bit to iMon 32-bit conversion with a socket to a helper "service". A really creative solution.

I still have some ideas about what could be altered:

While playing, the first line scrolls artist: title until the last character of title has scrolled out, like having 15 blanks after title. Then it restarts left-justified with artist. As the first letters of artist scroll out immediately, it is difficult to read the artist name. It might be easier to read if you add some spaces at the beginning too.

In the second line there are h:mm:ss/h:mm:ss. In the 32-bit version, if I remember correctly, it was something like nn/nn h:mm/h:mm. Is there a possibility to bring back the title number?

When idle, just the time is displayed centered in the first line. Here it would be helpful if the position of the time changes sporadically. This could prevent burn-in. (My display unfortunately already has several pixels with reduced brightness.)

As I am a software developer too, I could assist you in realizing this wish list, if you like.

Title: Re: Any VFD Support
Post by: millst on January 24, 2018, 11:00:59 am
Thanks, but one correction. I had nothing to do with the 32-bit version for the two-line VFD. I don't even have that one. I have the one-line VFD with lots of status icons.

However, I'm providing some basic capability for that display since they both are managed through the same library. Unfortunately, the API is completely different so you'll have to set your expectations low. Not having that display limits testing, leading to trial and error, for not much benefit [to me]. I'm not even using 64-bit since the visualization plugin I use is still broke.

Are you sure it's burn-in? Burn-in usually means image retention, which isn't a big thing with LCD. Not stuck pixels?

Title: Re: Any VFD Support
Post by: Inquisition on January 24, 2018, 11:16:10 am
The VFD Display we have burns in.

But this means not that you get ghostsings on display like with old plasma tvs for example,  by vfd display.the single dot elements getting older.  How older the get the brightness gets lower.

So you see words in display which letters individual bright shine.

The problem will be,  is the pc in idle and shows the clock most time of the day, those vfd elements who show the clock will older much faster then the others and shine more and more lower then the others.

By the way,  don't know where you all located, but on ebay there is an dealer from poland who sells new displays.  He also has the 2 line  16 letter displays.   They can be changed one by one.  I do this twice till now.   One display costs about 18 euro.

I post a link later.

At begin it was only for 32bit. After mc64bit releases millst works on an 64bit version, the downloadlink for 32 must be somewhere in this thread or in this forum.

Best is use forum search and search for imon display, then you will find some threads and somewhere is the download.

Look what Display you have, vfd ( normaly 2 lines each 16 characters) or lcd (with symbols for record, disc and so on)

I have the version 1.3 (suppose is the latest 32bit version) installed. And apparently the correct imon version. The problem appears when I make the plug in visible in the mc24 services options.

Hmm that's curious.   When you have the 32bit plugin then it should run normaly.  But i believe to remember that i had also some problems with this plugin long ago  efore i change to 64bit.   I found then one version who works.

I will have a look on my NAS if I have this version and if yes I post an link tomorrow.

The original version I created should continue to work fine for 32-bit versions of MC. I've moved on to the 64-bit version and have no plans on making updates to the 32-bit version, sorry.

Regardless, I know of no interface in MC that provides information about the current menu selection so I could not add that functionality anyway.

Thanks for the reply! Apparently all versions that include the .ini file configuration produce this funny error. A bit of googling hints that the problem may be something as simple as non-initialization of variables.

Since you have no plans of fiddling with the 32bit code, I would be really happy if you could post your sources so that maybe I (or somebody else...) could look into this and provide support.

Is that all the information in the error message? It thought it was cut off, but maybe not. You could check in the Windows Event Viewer.

As far as troubleshooting goes, I'd recommend carefully reading through the thread from when I posted 1.0 through 1.3. Somebody may have already had your issue. Common issues that come to mind:

1) Not having .NET 4.0 installed (installer does not do this for you)
2) Display not supported by iMONDisplay.dll (look into the plugin that I didn't write)
3) Corrupt .ini file

That plugin was developed before the latest version of MC. You'll need to correct the install path during setup to get it installed in the correct location (1.3 defaults to MC21). Also, it looks like it uses a registry key from MC19 install to find the .ini file. You could try creating that key with the path to your current install. Check out the attached reg file (you'll need to strip off the .txt for forum forced me to add).

That enables the configuration interface in the tree view where I see iMonDisplayPlugin under Services & Plug-ins.
