Title: Spotify integration
Post by: MrHaugen on July 14, 2011, 06:46:42 am
Spotify, Europe's most successful music streaming service ever, is launching it's services in USA today (I think), and I'm wondering if you guys could take a look at Theater View integration of this rather great service. They have released a developer tool as well, so I think that integration would not be such a huge job.

The great thing about Spotify is several factors. They have lots of music, it's in a good quality, they have free alternatives (with some commercials), they support Mobile/Pad sync etc, and perhaps the best part; It's all integrated with Facebook, so you can share playlists with friends and look at others to discover new music. I don't just think. I know, that this would be a great addition to MC.

I know that this is in conflict with your service (Performer Store), but as the users in Europe and Asia and so on can not use the currently built in streaming service, we have no other choice than to exit MC and use other apps for this when we want to find new music or listen to streamed content. Almost every single person I know between the age of 10 to 35 have a Spotify account, and I think that MC would be a LOT easier to sell if there was a nice integration of this in Theater View. Seriously, I think I could convince 5-10 people in a couple of weeks to buy MC, if they was able to use this service with a remote, from their couch. I think this move would put you in a good advantage in non US regions when it comes to MC sales.

Highly agree with the above.  Would love Spotify to run in MC.  If it has to be the paid version of Spotify, that's OK with me.
Using all the controls and power that JRiver has to run Spotify would be wonderful.

My guess we wont see spotify integration from jriver. But there are several wrappers for the spotify api. So I think its up to plugin developers to come up with something. The third party plugin for squeezebox is really good and could be a good model...

I am also voting for this integration.  Very good idea.  This will be revolutionary in the US.

Spotify or Performer in theater view would be service that no other applications deliver.

Several friends mention the missing couch mode as a major shortcoming of Spotify.

I would also love a spotify-integration if its possible.

I'd love Spotify integration too. One problem I have with the standalone Spotify client is that it only uses the default sound card (@ least under Win7) and you cannot add local library files in FLAC or other lossless formats. Integrating Spotify playback into MC would certainly solve both issues and ensure MC continues to be my primary "go to" music player.

Thanks,
Don

I'd love to see Spotify integration!  There is a Windows Phone 7 app (and Android and iOS I presume) called Media Remote that will control Spotify using the API, so it should be possible for MC to do the same (though I'm not a developer so I don't know for sure).  Gizmo integration would be great too!

As pointed out in another thread - I would also love to see Spotify integrated into MC in one or the other way. For me there are two main drivers: 1) To playback Spotify content using the sound card of my own choice, MC audio engine including DSP plugins and 2) integration of streaming with local audio library.

Currently, there is a guy in Norway that has been waiting long enough for media player integration (not J River in particular), so he sat down before summer and wrote his own spotify client, named 'Fidelify'. Can be downloaded here:

http://www.fidelify.net/ (http://www.fidelify.net/)

This client runs ConvolverVST (or other VST plugins), and uses ASIO or WASAPI. It was initally made for personal use, but functions very well straight out of the box. So - what about functionality like this in JRiver?

I wrote to Spotify, and I'll follow-up if they reply.

It might also help if you, as Spotify customers, told them you wanted JRiver support.

Until then, you might consider Last.fm for a similar service (which Media Center supports natively).

Have you checked the API for Spotify? I think they have a pretty open API that can be integrated with Theater view for instance. I think it works pretty much like other services. You have a username and login, and then you can access search, library, playlists and so on. If there was a possibility to add Plugins for Theater View there could be people that might try to implement this, but don't think this is very possible today?

This is the documentation on the API. It does not make much sense to me I'm afraid.

Yes, it looks as if it is "sufficiently open" for MC purposes. Someone in this thread mentioned the Slimdevices plugin which uses, as far as I can see, the API in a similar manner to what MC would need.

That API is only for non-commercial purposes, guys. Spotify have a partner program for everyone else: http://www.spotify.com/uk/work-with-us/partners/contact/

I'm guessing that's what Matt was talking about :)

I wonder if this would apply if, say MC added a robust API of its own, and a user created a way to play Spotify through MC.

I hope Spotify do reply & they can get something worked out.

Spotify integration is the killer feature that would make me upgrade to MC17. Can't think what else would to be honest.

I have now used Spotify for the last few days (has only been available in Denmark since wedensday)

And to have it intergrated in MC TheaterView would absolutely be fantastic,
I hope they reply.

Just more as an FYI, but there is an api, the only issue with it is trying to determine which country the current user is within.  I assume this is due to legal issues.... http://developer.spotify.com/en/libspotify/overview/

I'm wondering if a user made Plug-in might do the trick. But I'm not sure who could make such a thing though.

I wrote Spotify now, with a rather thorough inquiry of an integration in MC16/17. Let's hope they can see the value in more paying users.

There is a user made one for squeezebox. I can't see how that is different from a potential mc plugin.

Spotify and boxee "combine forces" (http://www.hardware.no/artikler/spotify_og_boxee_slaar_sammen_kreftene/102860)

It's in Norwegian but google translate does this page well

This is probably something that Boxee have produced them self. So, Spotify obviously allows such things to products when they see a potential for more Premium subscription sales. Let's hope they do see the same for JRiver MC.

Spotify didn't write back.

If you want this, I think you'll have to tell Spotify it's important to you.

Done too.

I'm concerned this thread isn't getting much attention in the MC16 forum, though, because of the new MC17 one.

23 votes is not going to make a difference I'm afraid.

I like the service Spotify has to offer, their program really sucks though. I can't stand it. I don't want "another" program, I already have what I want and it's called JRiver Media Center.

Someone write me a plugin, you know you want to, really!  ;D

Spotify has released an API and documentation.

https://developer.spotify.com/en/libspotify/overview/

Does this allow the development of a for a plugin for MC?
Title: Re: Spotify integration
Post by: MrHaugen on December 16, 2011, 03:33:14 pm
Both yes and no.

Users can create a plugin for Media Center. But as the documentation and API for MC is is rather limited I think, we'll probably never gonna get a really good user created plugin.
JRiver can create an integration, but for it to be fully legal, they need permission from Spotify. Every attempt at contacting them has received no answers. I doubt that JRiver would ever be held responsible for adding such a feature, as it only brings them more customers. But it's a gamble non the less.

Any recent developments or news about using Spotify within JRiver? That would truly be the very best of both worlds. Thanks much.

Hi all I wanted to bump this up to see if there is anything new regarding MC 19 and Spotify integration?  Would love to integrate Spotify and JRiver for DSP settings, bit perfect playback, etc.  I saw the Fidelity Player (http://www.fidelify.net/) as a possible substitute, however ... it ain't JRiver ;D
