Use this feature in iTunes all the time, most often for Classical. I have found smartlist syntax that works most of the time, but is not 100% dependable.
Biggest problem I have -- and this applies to creating smartlists in general -- is when I want to build a smartlist around more than one genre or more than one artist. Say Classical and Jazz or Rock and Pop; Rolling Stones and Beatles. Can not figure out the syntax for that. Something maybe like
[Media Type]=[Audio] [Genre]=[Rock] or [Genre]=[Pop] ~limit=-1,1,[Album],[Album Artist (auto)] ~a
