Title: Video White and Black point adjustments
Post by: DeaneG on March 05, 2020, 04:23:57 pm
Is there any facility in madVR for adjusting video white/black/gamma? I see a selection for monitor type, but am wondering if the usual video calibrations are meant to be done on the monitor rather than through JRiver's software.

The reason I ask is that black levels (shadows) in videos look great for about the first second of playback, then suddenly become lighter, giving a foggy appearance. It's as if something in the playback chain decided it needed to map 0-255 to 16-235.

MadVR anticipate 2 type of calibration ... on display itself, then anything connected to that display will show calibrated image

Or using 3DLUT ... this method result only MadVR images being calibrated ... anything else connected to display won’t be calibrated ... this includes Windows itself

Foggy appearance is not something that 0-255 displayed on 16-235 will look ... itt will look with crushed blacks (cannot see details in dark parts)

More details on your setup will be helpful in troubleshooting

I have a samsung plasma TV connected by HDMI to an Nvidia GTX970 video card. Using a 3rd party test image, blacks (TV "brightness" setting) are well calibrated. However when I play a video file through Media Center, it looks great for about a second, then I notice the image changes suddenly to become a little brighter (black shadows become gray). Just wondering who is likely to be doing this remapping - my TV is locked in "Movie" picture mode; I hope it's not the culprit.

Try Red October Standard and HQ.  Are they the same?

What your NVidia setting in resolution ... dynamic range - full or limited?

In MC you using RO standard or HQ?

TV Movie mode simply means it has less aggressive brightness/contrast/etc settings to try preserve color. By no means it is referring to 0-255/16-235 setting.

0-255 setting on TVs is usually referred to as PC mode ... should be property of your HDMI input in settings
