Title: 4TB SSD in Mac Mini 2014
Post by: PPatla on September 05, 2022, 04:00:22 pm
I want to put a 2nd SSD in my 2014 Mac Mini so that my music collection sits on an SSD for performance and also power consumption.

Has anyone successfully put a 4TB SSD in a 2014 Mac Mini?

I tried a SAMSUNG 4TB SSD with a kit from ifixit (yes it's a bit of a pain to open up but I'm used to opening these mini's) and couldn't get it to format no matter what I tried.  I formatted the drive on an external enclosure on my Mac Mini 2012 with Monterey, and I also formatted it in a Windows machine and had no issues.

I could not get it to format in the 2014 Mac Mini, it kept showing up as a MBR device and I couldn't convert it to a GUID device.

Thank you for that link,  I've google many how to upgrades.

It's interesting that links shows a SAMSUNG drive should work.

The issue I'm struggling with is, I'm not sure the system supports two SSDs at the same time.

The 2014 Mac Mini has a 256GB PCIE SSD as the main boot drive.

There is room for a second 2.5" drive in the second bay, when I install the SAMSUNG there it won't format and the 4TB size isn't recognized properly.  It reports as 2.2* (with an asterisk).

I think I'll try a Crucial SSD next as the link you posted has led me to also find other recommendations that the Crucial may work.

I'm really trying to find someone that has done it and said "yes that works".

I'll try a Crucial next.

Any big aversion to just using an external? With that old a Mac, speed probably is not a consideration anyway.
I'm also using a late 2014 Mini, btw. :-)
