I have a WDTV Live. The manual says that it is capable of receiving FLAC input. However, when I send a FLAC file to it, I get the "something went wrong with playback" message from JRiver.
More details:
I keep my library as FLAC files. If I configure the DLNA server to Mode: Orginal , I get the "something went wrong message". When configured to Mode: Specified format when necessary and Format: MP3 high bandwidth, everything words perfectly. I presume JRiver is converting to mp3.
Question: Does anyone know how to send FLAC files to the WDTV Live ?
Related question: Is there a way to tell if JRiver is converting formats when Mode is set to convert only when necessary?
Thanks. Steve
Love JRiver. Already upgraded to 19.

Hi,
short answer - no
Refer to http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=73744.msg527751#msg527751 (http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=73744.msg527751#msg527751) post 54.
I couldn't get it to work when using the WD device as a renderer. I'll try again with MC 19, but think it's a WD issue

Steve

IMHO the server needs to have more choices under the "Always Convert To" drop down selector.
Currently the selector only offers L16, L24 or MP3, and I think a FLAC option should be added to this list.

FLAC isn't seekable (with on the fly conversion) unless it's in an OGG container and just about nothing will accept that (as far as I can tell).

I know...
You would know best!
I did try working this in at one point but when discovering the seek problem, left it out.
I don't think I could get the WD to start playing until the conversion was complete since it couldn't
get a file size and it wasn't seekable (not 100% sure of this, it's been a while).

For WD is this really an issue? It works well with L16 No Header. Doesn't the server have to go through that (or very similar) format anyway to get to FLAC from another format (such as APE)?

Correct AFAIK.

So the fly in the ointment is the WD doesn't seem to be able to accept FLAC. OR is it that MC and the WD unit are not communicating so as MC correctly interprets what formats WD is capable of accepting? Is there a way to figure that out? Steve

I just checked mine with device spy and it does NOT claim to support flac via DLNA.
It's possible it only supports it on pluggable media (i.e. usb stick). This divergence is not unusual.
-
However, it (WDTVLive) DOES play flac even though it doesn't claim to.
There are probably the usual limitations in sample rate, bits, etc.
I just tried 44.1k 16 bit 2 channel and it worked.
This is why sourceprotocolinfo is so useless.
In general though, here I set the WD to "specified output format" , PCM 24 bit, Volume Leveling, Stereo Downmix, 48k sample rate.

@bob
WD sure have problems updating their protocolInfo:
if(isWDTV()) {
protocolInfo += ",http-get:*:video/quicktime:*,http-get:*:audio/wav:*,http-get:*:audio/x-flac:*,http-get:*:audio/mp4:*,http-get:*:video/x-matroska:*";
}

I just got the WD Live SMP and get a "Unable to play selected file" error on the WD player itself when trying to play via DLNA (pull). I can't convert to WAV since I'm trying to play multi-channel FLAC which does play ok when played from a USB thumb drive. Is there any way around this in the "pull" scenario?
-
I could never get multichannel FLAC to work via DLNA with the WD TV Live SMP.
I'm also limited by the connection between the WD unit & av processor and TV. To the TV is HDMI (so 2 channel only), to the amp is spdif which I don't think can handle multi channel FLAC.
Will let you know,
Steve

I know thus is a very old post but I too cannot "pull" flac to WDTV Live SMB from MC.
Was this ever resolved? Any work-arounds?
-
In case anyone stumbles across this, I solved my own problem.
1. MC ver. 19.0.131
2. Media Network, Add or Configure DLNA Servers, Format: PCM L16 No Header
Unfortunately WAV doesn't seem to work, and yes still no gapless.

PCM L16 No Header is the format ALL DLNA renderers are required to support which is why it works.
None of the WD devices support gapless playback via DLNA.
