Title: Volume leveling basic question

If the Volume Mode is disabled, how does volume leveling work?   Also, does the leveling work for all formats. PCM, DSD?  Thanks.

I'm not an expert at volume leveling, but I think with volume mode disabled it will still work as expected as it never actually adjusts system volume.  I believe it does work on all formats.

Thanks though I'm still confused.   If system volume is not adjusted, how is the file's amplitude changed higher or lower?

Volume leveling is applied to the 64-bit signal as it passes through the audio engine.

You can always check the complete Audio Path during playback:
