Title: Tapatalk isn't Working
Post by: Trumpetguy on January 06, 2018, 10:36:28 am
The past few days I have not been able to log in to Interact through Tapatalk, it says something like Unable to log in, Network Error. Other forums are accessible as normal through Tapatalk. Something that needs to be reset in the JRiver end?

Did the default signature ads finally do Jim in? Haven't been able to access the forums via Tapatalk for the past few days (get_config network error).

We removed Tapatalk.  It wasn't just the ads.  There was a big Tapatalk banner when opening the forum for the first time which gave the impression that we were recommending Tapatalk.  I'd rather that users have a JRiver impression first.

That's too bad. Gotten used to tapatalk for mobile browsing. Interact Web site isn't exactly mobile friendly.

Wish you would reconsider as I use Tapatalk as the hub of my "online life."

However, I wouldn't be opposed to installing an official JRiver Interact app either ;D.

Removing Tapatalk without offering an alternative for mobile phones is really not a good idea.

I am reading the forum 100% on my mobile phone. Your forum is not responsive, please reconsider Tapatalk.

It is the only way to read your forum properly.

Thank you!

We're not opposed to offering Tapatalk, we are opposed to their huge banner ads being introduced for mobile visitors. Unless there is a way to disable them, perhaps one should request there to be one from Tapatalk.

I cannot replicate the issue with banners in other boards on Tapatalk, but anyway - I think the point is: in 2018, the forum definitely should be responsive.

I don´t care, if it´s Tapatalk or any other 3rd party solution. I even would install an (Android) app just for Interact in order to be able to follow it. At the moment, i feel cut off, as I need to go back to the desktop to read the forum.

Just some food for thought - how users access the Internet today:
41% Mobile
8% Tablet
only 51% from Desktop!!

I have never noticed any banners, could you please post an example?

I guess Hendrik is talking about the ads - see attached example...

He means the big banner shown to a user viewing the forum in a mobile browser when Tapatalk is enabled and you have not dismissed the banner. It makes it look like the site is telling you to use Tapatalk.

I think it is also about the signature "Written using Tapatalk" (or similar) that was below some posts done with Tapatalk. That can be turned on and off in the Tapatalk app as far as I understood JimH's comments every time he saw this.

Funny thing I have never seen any ads like that at JRiver four or any of the (few) others I visit using Tapatalk.

But the main thing here is that there is no good way of using Interact on mobile devices now. I would think it should be in JRiver's interest to do something about that, considering the importance of Interact to MC as a product.

I use Interact on a mobile phone without Tapatalk.

We're not going back.  We may be able to tweak the forum software.

Yeah, same here. Works pretty good, IMO.

It does need a mobile/responsive theme (irrespective of whether you bring Tapatalk back)
Title: Re: Tapatalk isn't Working
Post by: Trumpetguy on January 19, 2018, 10:09:43 am
I have no urge for using Tapatalk as such. Any mobile solution that works, works.
I fully agree that using Interact in a browser on my mobile is possible. In my opinion it does just not give the optimal user experience now that we have gotten used to web sites optimized for mobile devices.

Appreciate if you are willing to tweak the forum software.

Jim, see attached screenshot. This is how it looks on my mobile. I guess it's the same on many other devices, and this is really a very bad user experience.

I don't care about Tapatalk, but I would very much appreciate, if you provide us with an alternative responsive solution to Tapatalk, if you switch it off.

Thanks & best from Vienna,
Alex

Try selecting Curve as your theme.  It's under Profile > Look and Layout.

Maybe I am blind today, but I find nothing like a choice for themes anywhere.

Yes. The design looks much more pleasing.
However - still not responsive, so the same as before.

Try a refresh.  Try logging out.  Try on a mobile phone.

Tried it on another device (Xiaomi Redmi S3) - first time JRiver on this phone, so there shouldn´t be any caching issue. See screenshot attached.

Post by: JimH on January 19, 2018, 05:31:10 pm
That looks right.  The threads are justified correctly so you don't have to zoom to read.
Title: Re: Tapatalk isn't Working
Post by: Al ex on January 19, 2018, 05:40:19 pm
Unfortunately not Jim.
This is not responsive / not optimized for mobile phones, if you still have to zoom / pan / move content with your fingers in order to read it.

No.

On my phones, I need to zoom-in in order to read what´s there.

Cache?
Nope. Was using another phone (Xiaomi S3) for the first time, so it shouldn´t be on the client side. Maybe you need to flush cache on the server side?

Sad, just sad.... Surprised that it's a bad thing to tell people about an interface that is 100x better than a mobile web browser. I'm happy when I see that banner telling me the site is available on Tapatalk. Using mobile browser is not fun.

Did you try this?

https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,113909.msg788565.html#msg788565

It's not a fix, but it should improve your experience.
Title: Re: Tapatalk isn't Working
Post by: tzr916 on January 29, 2018, 08:26:13 pm
Yes I did try it. It's different than default but doesn't really help. Pages load slower than Tapatalk. Navigation is clumsy because every page that loads has to be zoomed and panned. No easy access to threads being followed. No topic notifications of replies/PM's (unless email is setup on mobile device). A true mobile site like m.yabb.jriver.com that's actually designed specifically for mobile browsers would be very appreciated.

With Curve, I get a screen that has larger text and doesn't require scrolling left and right.  Please see my attached image above.

Try rebooting.

I've read the entire thread. My experience is the same as others here - the offered desktop themes do not work properly on mobile device -  still requires zooming and panning L/R.

Meanwhile just a few forums that do display correctly on mobile device browser:

tenforums.com

I'm not getting the responsive lot on mobile using the Curve theme either. I've tested on Brave browser and Firefox.

Can I just throw it out there that another major reason I use tapatalk is for its  "night mode" aka white text on black background. I get terrible eye strain and headaches using most default light themes, especially on my OLED screens.

Absolutely! Night mode is also a big asset of Tapatalk!

We're installing a new theme called Typography.  It looks good.

You can try it by changing your theme under Profile > Look and Layout.

Yes, now it's usable on a cell phone!

Any chance that the font size could be reduced?

Yes, I am not 25 anymore and I need glasses, but I still would prefer a slightly smaller font size :) See attachment...

New look is definitely an improvement, or at least a step in the right direction. But yes, font is way too big. I don't think that is a taste thing, the letters just don't fit.

And it is something about all the white space, ineffective area usage.

Another thing, I'm no longer able to find a direct link to threads I've participated in. Is it gone, or moved somewhere?

I think that this solution needs more attention. I know that I would be a better Interact contributor if there was an easy way to navigate on my mobile device (i.e. when I am on the toilet  ;D).

Just chiming in. I really can’t navigate with the way the forum is via iPhone.
Doing anything on the forum is painful.

It took so long just to find and navigate to this thread for relevant information.

If we can get the thing you found annoying removed from the Tapatalk API, would you be willing to re-implement it?

In your forum profile, try setting Current Theme:SMF Default Theme - Curve

In your forum profile, try setting Current Theme:SMF Default Theme - Curve

Yeah, I probably should have mentioned that I had tried that, but the phone screen makes the text hard to see. I’ve increased the text size a bit. It’s usable, but not pleasant.

Typography theme was pretty close, but most of the options were cut off screen and text size adjust jumped between extremes too much.

I guess that’s the iPhone experience without an app.  :-\
