Title: theatre view/display view never respects external monitor selection
Post by: zeltak on January 02, 2022, 03:23:00 am
Hi all

using latest MC and MacOS with 2 external monitors connected to MBP 14" 2020.

i define display #2 as my theatre view output but it always outputs to display #1 (See image 1)

is this a known issue and if not how can i debug this

best regards

Z

This works fine on my DUAL monitor system.
Does anything happen when you choose monitor 1 vs monitor 2? (like one goes on the internal display)?

thx so much @bob for the reply

i teste all possibilities in the last hour or so (my finger are now glued to Command-4 :) :))

bottom line:

it reliably outputs to display #1 (my main display) when defined in full screen option but will not no matter what output to display #2 if i define that as the output

seems like a bug? can anyone confirm this? is there a solution? just bought a 2nd screen just for that :)

Is the internal display active or just the 2 external monitors?

Patience please.  If we can't duplicate it, it's hard to fix.

I assume you tried with the laptop lid open and screen on.

I tried this with 3 monitors and it works. Not exactly as I'd expect though. It grabs the monitor by device order, not by arrangement.

With 2 monitors it acts the same. Have you tried changing the arrangement through display preferences? Does the inactive internal display appear?

My MBP with the lid open and two external monitors, does seem to do the ordering in some funny way also.  Display 1 is one external, 2 is the internal, and 3 is the other external.  Presumably the OP can try each of his until he finds the correct screen and leave it set there.  At least I hope so.

Thanks for testing it.
If you close the lid (or disable the internal monitor) can you still get on to both external displays?
Does it show 3 devices in MC's settings?

I think what's going on is that the fullscreen video playback code isn't determining the monitor by the arrangement. It's like it's using some sort of device order.

thx all for looking into this

i tried with the MBP screen open and the same behavior occur

i have noticed now that when i either choose DP #2 or DP #3 it does work in the first launch but then after each launch it differs back to DP #1 (which is the defined in the mac settings as default). Even though i manually in MC settings have DP #2/3 it will always differ to DP #1

thx again, happy to further help debug

Are you saying that you CAN get it on all 3 monitors with the cover open?
At least on ONE launch of MC?

So are the MC settings (Tools->Options->Tree and View->Monitor) not saving??

Hi Bob

well not at once :) but yes i can get it to any display i define initially (even with the cover open) but then after that 1 time it always goes to DP1 (Default)

the settings are saved (ie if i define DP#2 in "Tools->Options->Tree and View->Monitor" it does save it but won't output to anything but DP1 (the default)
