Title: Question about Output Encoding- Should I use it?
Post by: Pesaudio on August 21, 2020, 01:19:17 am
Hi I have a capable native 2x DSD asio device and I hear things coming back and forth that you either can or shouldnt use it. I want to hear what you think should be the final verdict. I mainly use Flac files

Personally, I playback FLAC (or any PCM in general) as-is without doing any sort of conversion. Same with DSD files, I bitstream those to my DAC and don't do any sort of conversion.

PCM to DSD, or DSD to PCM conversions are a lossy conversion, so that's something to consider. There's no way to make those conversions lossless. Because of that very reason, I prefer to leave everything as-is without doing any sort of conversion.

I would suggest you do what sounds best to you. If you hear a difference in converting to DSD then do it. If you do not, there is no reason to go through the conversion  It all depends on what you hear and what you like.

Note that by converting to DSD you give up the ability to use any DSPs.
