Title: Playing back audio from JRiver with no monitor attached
Post by: rlmartindale on December 26, 2023, 02:47:48 am
Is it possible to set River up to playback audio files without also having the monitor on (in my case, a 4K TV)?  I would like to start a playlist, for example, and then turn off the TV while it continues to play.  Or can the display be set to blank somehow?

thank you.

What happens if you turn it off?
Are you connected to a receiver before the TV?

Another solution might be Panel or JRemote: I use it for audio only and leave the projector off.
But the first question is: have you tested it? What happened? Did the music stop?

it is a Windows htpc connected through a Denon receiver

The sound stops coming from the receiver when the monitor gets turned off.   That is why I hope for a blank screen solution.

Is the TV connected via ARC? This or cec might be the cause why it goes off.
Have you tried another hdmi-input?
Title: EDID

This is an EDID issue. You will need a hardware EDID device to trick Windows into thinking that the display device is always on. I tried several, including HDFury 4k but gave me issues. The one that worked out of the box for me is Atlona ETU-SYNC EDID Emulator:
https://atlona.com/product/at-etu-sync/

I connected this between the HTPC out and the Denon AVR in. Follow instructions to copy EDID. Now I can turn off the Tv, even turn off the AVR, and Windows doesn't care. This is a critical device if using multiple monitors on Windows.

My TV (Hisense U8K) explicitly has an "audio only" mode in the quick menu, I select it and my eARC soundbar continues to function perfectly with the screen off. Maybe your TV has a similar setting if you hunt for it.

My tv upstairs does not have screen off mode, so I ended up creating a picture mode preset with the contrast and brightness turned all the way down. Getting it back to the normal picture mode is the tricky part  ;D

The Sony in my main home theater room does have a screen off function, which I do use sometimes. But powering the tv and/or avr down at night with multiple monitors gets real messy on Windows => open apps get resized and moved around to different monitors, theater view goes all screwy, audio devices change, etc.

No joy...ARC is turned off on all HDMI inputs on the receiver and there does not appear to be a blanking setting for either the TV or the receiver.  Is there one in JR?

Its not a big enough deal to spend $300 plus to fix it...maybe i will just throw a blanket over the TV.

ARC has nothing to do with EDID. Tv's and AVR's do have any user settings for EDID. Some have claimed that newer NUC's with Intel GPU's have an EDID persistent setting.

If you search for "Atlona AT-ETU-SYNC" on eBay you can get them used for $40~$50, right now there's one brand new for $60.

EDIT: Should read "Tv's and AVR's do NOT have any user settings for EDID"

I know this thread is a bit old but I'm interested in it from the NUC angle.
The NUC11 and newer have this persistent setting and it does work, I wonder though about the affect of a TV connected to the amp, in my case a
Sony STR-DH520
It seems like the TV EDID is passed through depending on some of the amp settings, I haven't quite figured this out yet.
On the NUC if the EDID changes between boots it will stop for keyboard input on boot about what to do about that which stops the boot until you answer.

Most PC motherboard BOIS have a setting to ignore no keyboard. I have no experience with NUC BIOS.

Thanks, I'll try that. I'm more wondering about the EDID being passed through the receiver from the TV and maybe how to prevent that.

Oops, I had to edit my post. Should read "Tv's and AVR's do NOT have any user settings for EDID".... If your NUC11's "persistent EDID setting" isn't working, your only choice is a hardware EDID device placed in the chain somewhere.
