I would like to be able to script JRiver Media Center like iTunes: Reading and writing to the library, adding songs, managing playlists, tagging, etc. The only interface on Mac I know of is the web interface, and that seems to be limited to read operations.

It is not limited to Read Only. MC's Library Server function itself is built on MCWS. As is JRemote.
Read/write access requires authentication to be enabled.
It is quite powerful.

Wow, don't know how I missed that. Thanks. It looks like this could be just what I'm after.

In terms of tagging and playlists, JRiver's MPL file format can do a lot it seems. You can export MPL lists of albums, playlists, etc. Then you can externally manipulate those MPLs and then tell JRiver to re-import them. This updates any tag changes you have made and adds any tags you have added.
I'm experimenting with that myself and should have something working soon.
Brian.
