Title: NEW: iTunes Playlist Import
Post by: Matt on June 05, 2019, 10:59:00 am
Media Center can now import playlists and files from iTunes.

Look in the file menu for "Import From iTunes...".  It will create an iTunes playlist group and put every playlist found in iTunes under it.  It will also import all the files it finds.

We thought this might become increasingly important as iTunes fades away.

I don't see the Import From Itunes on File menu. I see Export to Itunes but not the flip side.

So it just automatically imports EVERYTHING from iTunes. All playlists and any media files contained in those playlists?

No selective control on what to import?

And for iTunes Smart Playlists, it will import a static version of the current playlist?

I don't know about iTunes smartlists.  MC has its own smartlists.

The playlists and media are imported, but media isn't touched. It stays where it is and won't cause problems with iTunes.

It should import all playlists.  You can delete any you don't want.

I just want to understand. So does this mean I can synchronize my iPod with adding and subtracting music as I do with iTunes?

So no way to just import playlist? I do not want to import the ALAC files from iTunes. I use my FLAC library, which is the same, for JRiver Media Center. If it wasn't for itunes and Apple, I would not have FLAC and ALAC files.

You announce this new feature but it does not work.
I select "Import From iTunes" but nothing happens.

Can you tell me what happens?

Thank you

Well, I gave up on iTunes years ago, but...

It will create an iTunes playlist group and put every playlist found in iTunes under it.  It will also import all the files it finds.

Look in the Navigation Pane at the left under "Playlists" for the "iTunes" group. You should find your iTunes playlists in there.

If that doesn't work, maybe start iTunes first, upgrade it if it forces you to (my old version won't start anymore, trying to force me to upgrade), and then try the import process.

Check under playlists for an "iTunes" playlist group after running the tool.  It should have made one if the import ran correctly.  Even if we don't find any playlists, I think the whole library is a playlist so there should be one.

Yep...playlists was the first place I looked.

Nothing there.....except "Recently imported" where there is over 80,000 numbered tracks all grouped into one.

A coming build will have a message and it will say if it doesn't work.  You could try updating iTunes also.

Some years ago, I exported quite a few of my files from JR to iTunes. If I import playlists (or files) to JR now, will it create duplicates, or will it simply skip the files that are in JR already?
Also, will playlists created by what I've bought from Apple Music be imported?

Only the Playlists themselves are imported, not the media files. So no duplicate files. The media files aren't moved either. They will be played from their current location. You may see duplicate or similar Playlists though. You need to manage that.

Your Apple Music Playlists will be imported, but not the media files. The Playlists should point to the media files. You will need to import any new files that MC doesn't know about, so these Playlists can be played, I think. MC may just play them anyway, and depending on settings, may import them when they are played. Look at "Options > General > Importing & Tagging > Automatically import files when played". If that is checked, MC will do what the setting says.

Great feature!  What are the long term plans for the iTunes codec?  Will we need to convert our iTunes files, or is something more efficient planned?  Is the codec expected to go public domain?

MC can play Apple codecs, so no need to convert.   Is that what you are asking?

Successfully imported 7 playlists from iTunes, with something like 27,000 tracks.  All listed under "Playlists" as iTunes.  Great feature.

So I'm trying to import my itunes playlists to MC25 using the import itunes playists feature in the file menu and it all goes well until I get the message "Itunes SKD could not be loaded.  Itunes must be installed" and everything stops - This happens whether Itunes if open or closed when I initiate the import command in MC25.  Please help.

That's a tricky one.

We're just trying to create an instance of iTunesApp.

The GUID is:
dc0c2640-1415-4644-875c-6f4d769839ba

In the registry here:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{DC0C2640-1415-4644-875C-6F4D769839BA}\LocalServer32

It should list the iTunes executable.

There should probably also be a key here:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\iTunes.Application

If that's not there, I'm not sure.  You could uninstall and reinstall iTunes maybe.

Thank you, Matt.  However, I am at a total loss as to what to do with the info in your response.

Well you could look at the registry using regedit.exe on your system.

Or you could try a reinstall of iTunes.

I'm kind of puzzled, so don't have great suggestions.

It would be nice if MC would make the same folder structure of the iTunes playlists and not just import them to one folder. It is a bit unpracticable with 100+ playlists.

I was able to import all my playlists but can only play the ones I created from the libraries I created.  Any playlists I downloaded into iTunes give me an error "something went wrong with playback".  This occurred even tho all of the playlists were free from iTunes.

Is it possible to add these playlists to JRiver.  I am using MC25.
