Title: 3D Support
Post by: henkeli on August 05, 2020, 07:22:10 pm
Good idea:
Don’t mess up 3D / continue to support 3D
Simple as.
Thanks, a single issue voter

Even though 3D is a dead format now, this is mostly up to the GPU drivers to keep supporting 3D. Nvidia already removed 3D support from their drivers, it's only a matter of time AMD does too.

There is a work around for this too. Using side-by-side or top-over-bottom to display 3D on a TV. I quit trying to figure out which driver to use and made the switch. I don't notice a difference but I do need to manually change my TV to 3D mode.

I cross my finger and hope Avatar sequels will revive 3D.

To be honest with glasses, 3D is only suitable for dedicated theatre rooms. That's why I think projectors still support it, but not TV.

i moved to latest nvidia drivers for other reasons, but OU 3D is still full resolution 3D on a 4K set that supports it (i have two LG OLED 2016 sets).  you can still buy many new 3D movies from Europe.  Zavvi is a good source.

also agree that it is best in a dedicated home theater room which we have, but passive 3D on these sets is so good that it works well in our family room too.   we also have so many pairs of glasses that we kept after seeing 3D movies at the theater, including children’s sizes which is great for our family.

honestly it not the video cards that are the limiting factor any longer.   it is the display device.  2016 was the last year for TV sets.   projectors still support but i wonder for how long?

i see no reason it would be removed from media center.   it’s not like it is being actively developed any longer, and requires no licensing fees since it is lav+madvr which are both open source.

love 3D.    that and blu ray menus are two major reasons we stick with media center for video (hardly the only reasons).

Grotesque!

Yes, that's where I watch mine (big screen theater room).
I find they are more enjoyable than tone-mapped 4K UHD, but I also find those files very pleasing too.

Recently watched Hobbit and Life of Pi and felt it was better experience than at cineplex.
Alita: Battle Angel involved James Cameron and was "real" 3D and it shows. Very nice to watch in 3D (also came with 4K UHD disc in box).
Trolls World Tour had a 3D Blu-ray release last month and that is at least one major to keep the format going for home video.

What's interesting, is that whenever I used to check cineplex show times the IMAX and/or 3D viewings were packed compared to the other showings.
Happened last year with Toy Story 4 (which was also released on 3D disc).

Grotesque!

not true for LG OLED ... as it uses 4K display and interlaced 2 images at the same time ... so it display 3840x1080 images at the same time ... as madVR can output Top/Bottom at 4K ... technically you dont loose any resolution

Same goes for projectors that can receive 4K top/bottom (i dont mention SBS as it renders MC OSD menues useless) ... you projector receives full 1080p video information (already stretched horizontally by madVR) ... all projector needs to do is stretch 2 images it receive in 4k top/bottom vertically ... so technically no information is loss

So not quite "grotesque" if you have 4k setup capable of 3D

EDIT: having seen what passive 3D on LG OLED can do compared to active Samsung 3D ... i really want to set up passive 3D for projectors ... but that requires either silver screen (not really fan of those)  ... or 6P lasers (waaay too expensive)

Fact or presumption?

Fact or presumption?
fact ... not in a year ... then in 5 years ... not in 5 years ... then in 10 years ... but eventually it will be dropped

you are asking wrong question ... correct one would be ... will it be dropped while it is still needed? ... and noone knows answers to that

i think AMD has removed 3D from drivers as well at this point.  At least when i was tooling around with a recent AMD card and drivers.   maybe i missed it in their control panel...

I have since moved up to the latest nVidia drivers because the Lg OLeD 4k sets from 2016 can display full res top and bottom from Media Center in 3D with a simple press of a button.  it is every bit as good as feeding frame packed to the TV
