Title: File name structure and path different in MC 28 from MC22
Post by: baldo on July 18, 2021, 06:02:03 am
Just upgraded to MC 28 from MC22.  Bear with me while I explain the issue and situation.

I do not have a  NAS drive, instead i have have separate HDDs with a copy of all the Flac media files in triplicate.

I have MC 28 for Windows as my main library. I do a Library back up on my Windows PC.

I then do a library restore on my Mac.

Then I do Tools>Library Toools>Rename, replace F6.

The windows library points to say A:\Directory1\Directory2\Music\Artist\Album\filename 1.flac

on the Mac I use to replace A:\Directory1\Directory2\Music\
with /Volumes/MacMusic Drive/Directory1/Directory2/Music/

This would then point the library on the Mac to all the relevant files and folders on the external Mac drive.

This way I could keep the parent file paths more or less the same or similar and not have to to do much changing.

this worked fine in MC 22 but in MC28 I now see the file path on the mac as
\\Volumes\MacMusic Drive\Directory1\Directory2\Music\Artist\Album\filename 1.flac

note the \\ vs / previously.

Has there been a change in the way MC 28 deals with file paths?

I still have MC22 installed on my mac and this works fine but there seems to be a different file path shown in MC28 vs MC22 to the same files.

How can I fix this in MC28?  I don't want to have to import all the folders again and essentially create a new library just on my Mac. Using the above method I can have the library synced over 3 machines with one as the master library.

the issue is fine on my two windows machines.

Thanks for bearing with me on this.  Let me know if you need me to clarify anything further.
Baldo.

I forgot to mention that I now get the error message

<file path format not supported - try checking convert windows file path syntax box>

I did check the box "convert windows file path the mac/Linux"

thanks again.

What I now did was to back up Mac library on MC22 and then restore library in MC28 pointing to the MC22 backup.
That works. SO I thought as a work around I could do the following:

MC28 windows - MC 22 Mac - MC 28 Mac.

but the mac will now not recognise the new file paths in MC 22. It says that it can't see the files.

this is probably a Mac issue but I how do I fix it?

Try using the tool File > Library > Portable Library.

That's designed to allow making a library cross-platform.

You'll need to setup the source and destination paths, then the framework should take care of all the slash conversion for you.

Let us know.  Thanks.

Thanks for this Matt.

I had a look at the wiki but I am not too clear about where I do this?

Do I do it on the source librbary, so on my Windows machine and then doa  library back up followed by a restore on the Mac.

Or do I restore the library on the Mac and then apply the rule on the Mac to the library after the restore?

Presumably you have a working Windows library already.

But on the Mac, restore that library then run the tool and enter paths.

Ok Matt,

It tells me to "use a pipe"....? What does this mean?

so if I am trying to enter the following rule

E:\Music\
/Volumes/ESD-USB/Music/

How do I do it?

The pipe is above the enter key.  Here it is:
E:\Music\|/Volumes/ESD-USB/Music/

It worked like a dream.

Thanks Matt.

Now all three libraries are synced up.

Thanks!  That feature isn't real well known about but it's pretty powerful.  Glad it's working 😊
