It looks like a recent version of JRVR caused a regression with audio decoding. When I'm not using bitstreaming, audio fails to play initially when starting a video. If the mkv contains a different audio stream, switching tracks (eg., from DTS-MA to DTS) allows audio playback. Then, switching back to the original track plays fine. I'm using latest AMD drivers on a 6800XT connected to a LG C2 OLED. Switching to MadVR or Red October Standard works normally, so the problem seems to be isolated to JRVR.
-
FWIW - There is a particular fix in 31.0.32 (still in beta) that address some startup sound issues when using JRVR. It may be related.
-
That's out now. It's on Latest.
-
It didn't help in my case, but it does seem to switch audio tracks a lot faster.
-
Can you post a log file?
JRVR does not really interact with audio at all, its just for video. I've also never heard of this before.

Here's a log where I started playback of an mkv (made with JRiver) and hear no audio output with the default DTS-HD MA track. I switched to DTS and heard audio, then back to the correct DTS-HD MA track and still heard audio. It doesn't matter if I make DTS the default and close then re-open the file.

It looks like the audio device resets for some reason.
Just as a test, can you try turning off HDR pass-through? Maybe the device doesn't like re-initializing while audio is playing? That would be a stupid bug, but not the first with AMD.
-
Yes, that seems to be it.
-
It may have started with the latest AMD driver update.
-
No change in the latest version.
-
Did you try to confirm if this issue does not exist with a slightly older driver?
There is very little we can do if the driver just resets your audio device when we send it a certain image type.
-
It works fine with MadVR and standard Red October, so some interaction with JRVR is clearly different. I can send you a log file of MadVR and/or Red October startup if that would help.
Edit: Actually, I don’t think Red October standard switches to HDR. I can double-check when I get home.
-
No, it does not.
-
Here's a log of MadVR switching to HDR with no audio playback problems:
-
Rolling back the driver to 5/23 did not help.
-
Does madVR actually turn on HDR output?
-
Odd, it does seem to have stopped switching.
-
Does madVR actually turn on HDR output?
After re-installing the latest driver, MadVR does in fact put the television in HDR mode and start audio playback.
-
What driver did you change to? Please be specific.
-
The current version is 23.7.1 (6/28) and I tried rolling back to 23.5.2 from late May.
-
It looks like a full re-install of the 23.5.2 driver package does solve the issue. The AMD HD Audio driver (10.0.1.24) is dated 6/8/2022 whereas the 23.7.1 version is dated 4/23/2023.
-
I just ran into this same issue. After upgrading AMD drivers to 23.7.2 for my Radeon 6400, there was no longer any audio when playing HDR videos with autoswitching to HDR. Audio in SDR still works fine. If I manually enable HDR in Windows, audio works fine in HDR. Rolling back to driver version 23.5.2 fixed it. I have no problem staying on this driver version.
I haven't tried old versions of MC to see if there is a connection there.
-
Just reporting that this is still broken with 23.7.2 from 7/25. I filed a bug report to AMD with 23.7.1 almost a month ago, predictably with no response.

I went back a couple JRiver versions to when it was working, but it made no difference with the updated AMD drivers.
-
Curiously, MadVR switching to HDR does work again with no loss of audio.
-
It's still probably a driver problem.
-
Just wanted to say that it looks like this was resolved recently. The current AMD audio driver (10.0.1.30) is dated 7/27/2023, so it must have been updated at some point with no mention in the release notes.
