Title: Converting from ape to ape
Post by: MarSies on January 26, 2004, 04:53:38 am
I have ripped most songs with ape in the normal mode. When selecting the "extra high" setting it saves a few MB's. Considering the amount of songs I have it saves me several GB on my RAID set.

Problem is that a number is added to the songname because a filename with that extension already exists. The number is actually not shown in the database.

I would like to convert al my songs from the "normal" ape setting to the "extra high" without a change in filename. Just wanna save space.

How can I do this  ?

I think you could use "Rename from Properties" after the convert to get what you want.

However, I wouldn't really recommend extra high -- it's inefficient (space vs. time) compared to 'normal' and 'high'.

Also, MAC 3.99 should be out before too long with compression improvements, so it may be worth the wait.

Thanks MarSies.

Hey Matt,

Yes, it works.

Tried it on a CD and the added number was gone. Other possible solution with drawbacks is to first convert to 'wav' and then back to 'ape'.

Only problem is that it takes more time and it would mess up my harddisk with more fragmentation. On the other hand. I will use speeddisk anyway.

Two things:
What is the problem with the "extra high" ape setting on a P4 - 2,8Hz - 1GB RAM ;)
Please enlighten me on MAC 3.99, what is that  ?

Will this new version be implemented into MC10 ?

MC is always up to date with the latest in APE.

Matt is heavily involved in both.  He sometimes hangs from his tail and eats a banana with one hand while coding with the other.

Jeez Jim,
I was delighted to hear he was coding with the other hand.............. ;D

Jim,

I have a valuable suggestion for MC10.

Implement a short clip of Matt doing what you described in the action window when ripping CD's!

Good idea huh!  ;D

I think this needs to move immediately to the top of the feature request list.
