Title: What's the best way to sync to an iPad?
Post by: csimon on July 05, 2013, 07:15:59 am
I'm hoping to get a second-hand iPad to use as a media player in the car. My music collection is mainly FLAC, and I want to convert to MP3 to sync to iPad. I understand that due to Apple's closed library policy, MC is not able to sync directly.

So - is it a case of running a convert to MP3 in MC to a directory (it will "skip conversion if destination already exists" so that it will only have to do new ones each time I run it) which I then import to iTunes and use iTunes to sync to iPad?

Yup, that's one way (using Convert or sync to a virtual handheld).

Also see iTunesSynchronizer in the 3rd Party forum.

OK, thank you. I've now tried both methods and it seems that the Sync to Handheld is better for this purpose than the Convert Format facility as you don't have to select all your files first and there is an option to resync if the last updated date changes.

My ratings don't appear to transfer across to iTunes though, although examining the converted files in Windows does show the rating. Is that where the iTunesSynchronizer plugin comes in, to sync items that don't transfer automatically?

I think you do need to use iTunesSync.... for transfer of Ratings.  I don't personally use them, so haven't paid attention to this aspect.
