Edit 01/2012:

There's a couple of quick tweaks that should make this skin compatible with MC17 (and 16 afaik). Also it should be unaffected by automatic MC updates, meaning its config files will not be overwritten.

sweet! What did you make it in?
Title: Re: [Theater View] Galaxy Skin
Post by: Daydream on November 20, 2009, 11:42:52 am
Photoshop. The idea was to replace all graphics from the stock skins with my own (and document settings and options in the process) but that I never got to finish. So there's some inherited graphics (even if not apparent) and the backgrounds are images from here and there (the challenge was to find something the fits the concept). Also at work here are smoke brushes (the top roller) which was a pretty fun experience.

What I would try next would be some more complex play with transparency for certain elements and striking paths for some cool light effects. Probably a different skin. The way MC reuses some graphics makes it a bit difficult because you have to anticipate how they will get scaled/stretched at some point. More granularity would be really helpful.

Thanks all for the kind comments! :)

My new favorite! Thanks for sharing.

I only have one problem. The first time I copied the default Theme directory, deleted and put the Galaxy files there. Everything in the Theme worked. Later on, when I restored the default directory, moved the Galaxy to a new directory and selected it in options,  I don't get the  image in the Theater View root. Any idea why?
Title: Re: [Theater View] Galaxy Skin
Post by: Daydream on November 23, 2009, 03:36:52 pm
The root image should be in the root of the theme folder as in
\Themes\Galaxy\Audio\
                      \Images\
                      \Video\
                      ...
                       01958_hexillus_1920x1200.jpg

DL the theme archive again, and choose in the Theater View options -> Theme - Install theme from zip file and it should do all the work for you.

I like it!

Do you have any plans for some different color schemes such as silver, black, or even a dark blue?

Will do!

I'd also appreciate if there was a version in Silver or Black, like datdude obviously want :) Just think the rollers gets a tad to much focus with the bright blue color now... Other than that, this is the best skin for MC by far imo.

My friend turned me on to your skin...NICE!
BUT...On his computer, he is able to see background visuals on the current artist playing.
It looks awesome.
I don't get those visualizations.
We are both using W7.
Do you have any suggestions other than asking my friend for the same drugs he takes? (Just kidding)

Thanks.

I don't get those visualizations.

go to options>thv>themes, click on the icon besides that choose options and enable 'use media slide show etc'.
in playing now it only works when there is one artist in playing now, just add one and it stops.. that is a feature.

Here is where is gets weird, me the friend, found the option under themes, so i called the original poster and he doesn't have the option under galaxy theme to use media slide show, what gives with that, we are both totally stumped.

i guess he is using an older version of mc14, the option was gone for a few versions, but returned again later.

Gappie is right. That feature depends on the version of MC, not anything I did with my skin.

Every time I go to sleep from the Theater View, I end up with very low resolution when I wake up the computer again. Does this have anything to do with this specific skin? I don't think I have changed anything on the computer except from the skin lately. This did not happen on the Noir skin as I remember.
Title: Re: [Theater View] Galaxy Skin
Post by: Daydream on December 21, 2009, 03:59:46 pm
First I would like to point that Noir and Acajou and all the other non-roller skin are based on the, let's say, old style type. Galaxy, which is based on Obsidian, has an inherently different style. However how this translates into any of the issues you see is beyond me (for all purposes and intentions the skins' code is not that different).

I can't really replicate your problem cause I'm not home right now, but a few more details might be useful when I try later. What type of sleep? S1, S3, hibernation, hybrid sleep? What OS? What graphic card?

There was a thread (can't find it right now) where Ben and me talked a bit what happened when you disconnected the video head and then switch it back (from an AV receiver end). We've kind of seen the same thing (resolution going crazy). I don't know what happens with a D3D surface (TheaterView) put through a sleep mode, but let's see if we can do more trial and error, and get some conclusive results.

Post by: MrHaugen on December 22, 2009, 03:02:05 am
My bad. I was previously using Obsidian skin of course (it's darn confusing having different names on default skins :))

I think I've been using S3 sleep exclusively for the last 3 years. It's system default sleep I'm using. I've set the machine to sleep when hitting shutdown buttons. I've got a Nvidia 7800 GTS in my HTPC.

OK. My PC is still in various stages of being reconstructed so I could only run some tests on my laptop. And all I can say is that I see distortions with both Obsidian and Galaxy, when coming back from S3. It's not consistent though. Sometimes the skins snap-resize to proper dimensions 1 sec after the interfaced pops up, sometimes they remain... all over the place, and only playing a video file and returning to the interface (which actually is a switch Display View - Theater View) restores things.

I'm not sure though that I see what you called 'low resolution'. For me it looked like upon coming back from S3, Theater View tries to accommodate an area that is not full screen, but rather full screen minus the taskbar area; therefore the text of middle screen links/buttons gets cut in half like being pushed up, out of place.

I'll keep on testing. I don't think there's anything wrong with the skin, but I'd like to check a few more things

I use S3 all the time and don't see a problem.  I always stop playback and "park" MC at Theater View home.  I'm using Obsidian.

The problem described could be a video driver issue.

Post by: gappie on December 23, 2009, 10:38:04 am
it looks like the issue i see with windows 7. i think w7 looses its resolution for the screen fairly easy (i use one monitor with 2 computers) and starts with a low resolution, when it 'finds' the right one for the screen it switches to that resolution, messing up the icons and thv which is still at the first resolution, with that it can give a small click on the sound card. its one of the reasons why i stay on xp for my main media. not sure if this made sence in this context (im old fashion, i just turn the machine off), and im not sure where the problem lies.

I couldn,t get it to even show up in MC15,.... worked in earlier versions, is this the reason : ?

15.0.69 (6/30/2010)

1. Changed: Updated Japanese translation (thanks to KANEY).
2. Fixed: If the program was started in Mini View, returning to Standard View would show Cover View instead of Standard View.
3. Changed: The Theater View location string includes the root roller selection when at the root (used by skins).
4. Changed: Theater View Theme system uses the selected skins Background.jpg or Background.png image automatically instead of a solid color.
5. Changed: Updated Theater View skins to all support Themes.
6. Changed: Theater View Themes are the only mechanism for providing a Theater View background. (media slideshow and animation section of skin are obsolete)
7. Changed: Theater View skinning now at version 2.4 (will require update of non-stock skins).

Downloads and un-zipping (via 7 zip) working here.  Updated two systems today (first one was before your post) and no problem either time....thinking something went bonkers with your download.

That option should just be plain, vanilla "Galaxy", not "Galaxy-theme".

When you open the archive, it contains a folder called "Galaxy" and all the theme files and folders are within that. It's that "Galaxy" folder that you should extract to your themes folder.

If you have used the "Extract" option that extracts the contents into a new folder named after the archive itself, then simply go to your themes folder, go inside the "Galaxy-theme" folder, right click the "Galaxy" folder, choose "Cut", go back up, into the themes folder, right click folder background and choose paste. Now delete the empty "Galaxy-theme" folder, set your theme to "Galaxy" in MC, and you should be all sorted.

In the first picture above, the last folder is called themes, that is where the theme files should be. If you go in there, you should be able to follow the steps I posted. The second picture you posted is the actual skin directory... Everything looks to be ok there.

petrossa, I was having that same issue and my theme folder had the correctly named subfolder called Galaxy along with the folder default. I decided to download the theme again.  Still did not work, but oddly enough I could choose the Obsidian skin and the Galaxy Theme and then the backgrounds showed correctly!

So I downloaded the galaxy skin again using the Glynor links and now it works.

Maybe try downloading again by deleting/reinstalling your folders for Galaxy under skins\Galaxy and under skins\themes\Galaxy
