Title: I can NOT sync my iPod classic, because no device in 'Drives&Devices'
Post by: hexid26 on January 07, 2017, 12:37:35 am
I want to sync my IPC (iPod classic). I replaced the hard disk with an SSD.
The 1st attachment is my system and JRiver information.
The 2nd attachment shows that iTunes (latest version) can find my device.
The 3rd attachment is JRiver. There is no device found.
In 'Option -> Handheld -> Device Management', the list is null. And 'redetect all devices' functions is useless.

So what's the problem? HOW CAN I SYNC MY IPC WITH JRiver?

I really need some one to help me.

I can sync with my iPod Classic, but the files are apparently in some database format that is unreadable by the iPod itself. MC can read the files on the iPod, but nothing else that I've tried does. Any help with this?

Hi, bro. Did you use JRiver on Mac or Windows? I use JRiver on Win can find my ipod classical and sync correctly. But the JRiver on Sierra never find my ipod classical in JRiver. I don't know why.... And nobody answer me why I can NOT see my iPod classical in JRiver.

IPod support is kind of an "old" feature at this point.  I say it that way (old) because JRiver spent a good bit of time and money developing Ipod support several years ago.  Then Apple changed things and made the ipod support built in to MC useless for new ipods.  I get the impression that they provide this feature "as is" only now because they aren't moving forward with ipod support at all.  They've abandoned the project since it's a moving target and they don't want to waste more time and money.

Maybe I'm wrong.  Maybe there *is* some kind of official support.  I just never see these types of questions addressed in a step by step meaningful way.

Myself, I've abandoned the ipod.  It's got a nice interface (mostly), but the proprietary nature and the premium price drove me away.

Brian.

Is syncing of pre-Touch iPods even supported on MC for Mac/Linux to begin with? Haven't got a iPod Classic to test this with anymore, sadly.

Thanks for reply. I knew that IPC is out of date. But JRiver for Windows still support the old IPC. JRiver for MAC dosen't support.

In my experience, JRiver Mac doesn't support the iPod classic. JRiver Windows does. It is a little troublesome...

Me too. I used to be able to sync my iPod Classic 160Gb from JRiver (even had a separate library of 320Kbs MP3 versions of all my files so I could do so), but now JRiver doesn't even find it. Is this something I've done, or simply a change in the software? Since I haven't even connected the iPod to my system for a couple of years (it normally sits in my car), I don't think it can be a change in the iPod.

Good news - after rebooting my computer JRiver 'saw' the iPod, and I appear to be successfully syncing now.

Let us know how the sync works out!
Title: MC22 finds iPod classic - MC23 no device in 'Drives&Devices'
Post by: smodking on November 10, 2017, 02:16:34 pm
Using a 7th Gen iPod Classic with a 360GB SSD, MC22 PC will detect the iPod. MC23 does not detect the iPod using PC or MAC versions of the software.

JRiver Support: iPod Classics have had a bit of s resurrection with lower cost SSD's. Is MC23 not supporting the iPod? As stated above, MC22 detects and loads music just fine, whereas MC23 simply does not detect the iPod.

I have tried to re-detect the device, but nothing. Rebooting, Mac and PC act similarily and do not detect. Does having MC22 and MC23 installed simultanously cause any known issues? MC23 MAC in on MacOS 10.13.1 High Sierra and is the only version installed. MC22 and MC23 are both installed on Win 10 PRO 64-bit.

Any help would be most appriciated.

If by chance you're using the 64-bit build of MC23 on Windows, it doesn't have handheld support yet.

I am using the 64-bit build of MC-23.

Thank you for your reply. It's reassuring to know that the issue isn't with my environment.

The 64 bit version of MC doesn't yet support handhelds.  The 32 bit version does.

Weird, I'm running the 64 bit and sync my wifes iPod several times a week.

do you restore it in iTunes, or do you let windows format it? when i try having iTunes restore it, windows tells me its corrupt, and MC can't find it. I'm afraid if windows formats it, then the IPod won't be able to read the database.

Your iPod Classic is exposed in Windows as the E: drive, which is why it works. No doubt it is visible in Windows Explorer. Any iPod that is visible as a drive letter should work with Handheld Sync.

Quote
23.0.82 (11/13/2017)
15. Changed: Enabled support for Handheld devices which expose a drive letter in Media Center 64-bit (ie. USB thumb drives, portable music players or phones with a single storage volume).

Handheld Sync still doesn't work (I think) when it has to detect the target device, but I think syncing to a Hard Drive or Hard Drive sub-directory has always worked. For updating devices that are not currently supported, sync first to a Hard Drive sub-directory, include file conversion if you wish, and then use whatever other software that works with your device to sync that Hard Drive sub-directory to your device.

Don't all compatible iPods show up as drives? I have 4 iPods that all show as a drive on three Windows computers.

The key word being 'compatible".

I believe at some time Apple stopped iPods from showing up as drives. But I am just going by what other users, web and review sites have said, as I don't own any iPods.

That's correct.  And they encrypted the database on the iPod's.  It began, I think, with the iPod Video.

This thread is about the Classic which is compatible.

Yes, I know. But I'm not sure everyone posting does.
